Subject: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: Crowhugger Date: 09 Jul 00 - 09:06 PM Hi, all, Mom's thinking she just has to have one more guitar. (**smirk**) She's heard of a guitar made in la belle province - that's Quebec for all the out-of-towners, eh? - called Seagulls. Has anyone got one? Played one? Heard one? Looking for personal impressions here; gossip is good too. She's e-free, so I'll keep her posted, oops, pun NOT intended, on what Mudcatters know or have heard. Or you can tell her yourself if you'll be at The Woods.
Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Jul 00 - 09:34 PM Hey CH......We've had some past discussions and threads about Seagull, so first, enter Seagull into the supersearch and you'll find several threads devoted to them. Overall, I think you'll be happy with what you read!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: GUEST,guitarist Date: 09 Jul 00 - 09:52 PM They're well made, although not quite the incredible bargain they were five-ten years ago -- it's not that their quality has declined, just that there are more good relatively inexpensive acoustic guitars available these days. Still if the absolute lowest cash outlay is important, they're a good choice. I think a Seagull S-6 (their basic solid-top dreadnaught) is around $300 US, or thereabouts -- nice guitar for the money, not sure how that translates to Canadian. The same company makes a full line of models under several brands -- Norman, Simon and Patrick, Godin (electrics), and iirc La Patrie -- so you're not limited to Seagull if you want to buy from la belle province. |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: Den Date: 09 Jul 00 - 10:10 PM I have an S-6 and I love it. Its got a pick-up in it and it sounds just about as good plugged in as it does acoustically. Den |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: p.j. Date: 09 Jul 00 - 10:14 PM Hey Crow! How's doin? Have you figured out when you and your cello are going to get to sunny Californiland? Or do I have to come to some North Coast doo to see you again? What's The Woods? PJ |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: Jon Freeman Date: 09 Jul 00 - 10:21 PM I have not given my view before and I am no guitar player but my assessment would be along the same lines as guitarist. I have seen better sounding guitars (any old make) that play as well as Seagull's for less money. I often think it is a case of forgetting makes, wandering down to the music store and trying a few different makes - you never know what you may find. Having said that, I can't imagine anybody going wrong with a Seagull. Jon |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: Crowhugger Date: 09 Jul 00 - 10:27 PM GUEST,Guitarist and Den, thanks for the quick responses! Hey, 'Spaw, I did that and got "no results blah blah..." Don't know what I did wrong. I'll try again. Was it wrong to search seagull "and" guitar? I didn't want every thread drift about Dave Winfield's murder at the Skydome. Peej, I'm dying to go swap lessons with ya! Airfare will be the easy part; it'll cost more for an airplane-resistant cello case. Maybe a second seat would be the cheaper way to go so long as I don't get in the habit. Hmmm...working on it for sure! The Woods is a music camp for kids over 18 (**another smirk**). I'll PM you with more info. We'll check back in a bit.

Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: GUEST,skarpi at work Date: 10 Jul 00 - 03:34 AM Hallo Crow, I have Seagull It is called duo, has two pickups. It is a studio guitar and it play very well. Are you gonna get one?. All the best skarpi Iceland. |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 10 Jul 00 - 02:43 PM the New Seagul Web Site Good wee guitars for good wee money... While I've had a loaner 'Tac-a-meanie' I've had the chance to compaire.. the Tack has this wild and wooly pickup in it, with a tuner and 20 presets ect ect, and it's kinda neat... it'd be better if thy had a manual to go with the bloody thing! When I asked the folks at Seagul to send info about the Pickup in my S6+Cedar, they sent me a barage of information all to readily.... And as far as accoustic cound goes, forgetaboutit! The satin finish on most Seagul guitars blows away ANY guitar I've heard that has they typicle 38 layers of shelack slopped on it's face... If I was only ever gonna play it plugged in, then maybe I'd look elseswhere, but my money is Canadian, and I'll sepend it Canadian when I think I'm gettting the best deal, so Seagull it is for me... My advice, before getting a enw guitar, play everyone you can get your hands on with your eyes closed! Let your ears and fingertips tell you which one is best for you... {~` |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: Crowhugger Date: 10 Jul 00 - 11:26 PM Skarpi, it's my mother who played someone else's and rather liked it. I'm just looking here for information because she is 'e-free.' Clinton, that's a pile of info, thanks. It'll all get passed on. CH. |

Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: catspaw49 Date: 11 Jul 00 - 01:08 AM BTW Hugger.....Is she actually wanting a new guitar, wanting to buy a Canadian guitar, or wanting one specifically made in Quebec? Or some combination thereof? Like a new Canadian guitar NOT made in Quebec or a new guitar period? Spaw |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: catspaw49 Date: 11 Jul 00 - 01:41 AM Oh yeah........Clinton, you have gone on about the "shellac" and high gloss finishes now and before.....so just so you know............ Guitars are finished in 3 basic ways: Hand Rubbed Oil, French Polish, and Lacquer. The lacquer finishes rarely exceed 5 mil thickness on any instrument and it doesn't matter a damn whether its a satin or hi-gloss finish. Satin finishes are sprayed to the same thickness as the Hi-Gloss but there is an additive in the lacquer that reduces the natural shine of the lacquer. To a builder, the Satin finish is far less labor intensive than the Gloss. It takes about a week for lacquer to dry thoroughly and only then can you start the buffing process which brings out the exceptionally high gloss. A Satin finish gets a wipedown and is ready to go. The buffing process take a LOT of time, even if you're Martin. In the final analysis, BOTH are about the same thickness and if anything, the Gloss is a bit thinner. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 11 Jul 00 - 02:37 AM It's not the thickness of hte finisht that's important.. well it is, but that's not what I'm on about.. the satin finish on my seagulls allow the wood to continue to age and so the sound improves over time.. with most guitars, the high gloss finish 'freezes' the surface of the face, so the tone never has a chance to 'mellow' with age... And that's the kind of sound I prefer... It's personal perferance, like I said though... Read the Seagul Story on the web page and you'll get a better description of what I mean... |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 11 Jul 00 - 02:40 AM Especially see the bit on their lacquer vs. Polyester lacqure... This forum really needs an 'edit' feature!

Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: GUEST Date: 11 Jul 00 - 07:51 AM I know seagulls like chips and potato-cakes but I've not played one for fear of a nasty bite. Actually I'm lying i have played a seagull(guitar,to avoid confusion) Dont really know about the different models but the one I tried was quite a nice sounding thing, also not bad to play.that does'nt tell you much ,but I thought I'd put my two Groschen in. |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: GUEST,guitarist Date: 11 Jul 00 - 10:19 AM Clinton, you must be thinking of those god-awful plastic-y finishes you sometimes see on cheap guitars. It's true those guitars sound awful, and don't improve with age, but they're just bad guitars, badly finished. But it doesn't follow at all that satin-finished guitars are superior to gloss-finished guitars. A good shellac (french polished) or lacquer finished guitar does indeed "open up" with age (well, not age really, being played is what does the trick). The advantage of the satin-finished Seagulls is that you pay less than you would for the same guitar with a good quality gloss finish -- it's cheaper to manufacture, that's all.

Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: GUEST,Irish Rose Date: 11 Jul 00 - 12:04 PM In June, I bought a Seagull Mahogany Duett. So far I have been very pleased with the sound and the action. It sounds great plugged in too. When I was shopping for new guitars I was looking at Taylor and Martin guitars. The price was more than my teaching salary could afford! I'm pleased with my new Seagull! |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 11 Jul 00 - 02:23 PM You folks are missing the point about my rant!! LOL!! Give me a soild top, satin finsh anyday... it just don't get better than that! {~` I. Rose... I was looking at the Mahogany's in my catalogue just the other day... Have you got the Mahogany Spruce, Cedar or Folk?? (The Duett refers to the pickup eh...) How do you like the Duett II pickup?? |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: GUEST,I guess Date: 11 Jul 00 - 02:38 PM I have a Seagull and it's been a solid good sounding guitar, but if you're staying in that price range, Yamahas are hard to beat. They just feel really sturdy and everyone I've played sounded good. Good luck. g

Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: Crowhugger Date: 11 Jul 00 - 11:50 PM Spaw, Mom isn't sure yet what she wants and needs. She's starting to perform more often: most weeks at an open stage; she's opened for a couple of people at Rasputin's in Ottawa; will play the Friday afternoon of Stewart Park Festival (just half an hour south of McDonald's Corners). What got her attention about Seagulls is that she played one for the first time performing and was completely comfortable with it, even though it felt entirely different from her little Martin. (No, it's not for sale.) Mainly she's a singer and plays enough guitar to get by; she isn't proficient enough to play other guitars without a lot of mistakes. With the Seagull in her hands for the first time, she performed a set without incident. So, she's investigating. And I just happen to know a great music forum to ask about things like this!! There's a lot of trying out to do before she settles on something she likes both au naturel and miked.

Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 12 Jul 00 - 02:55 AM She's played Rasputins eh?? Know a band called The Riverdrivers??? There's a guy there from my hometown, who credits me with getting him into canadian/celtic folk music... So if ya see 'em, tell Phil that I said he should send me more email!!! {~` |
Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: Crowhugger Date: 12 Jul 00 - 03:37 AM Clinton, Small world, eh? More stuff to pass on to her, thanks again. Rasputin's Thursday night song circle/jam is where she started when she still lived close enough to make the drive. Then it was their Open Stage, Next Stage, split a gig with Uncle Dave (I joined her for that one since I was there for her 'first gig' anyhow). Perth is now her nearest full-sized town. She's just lately discovering the magic of fiddle, and wasn't going to the traddie sessions there. Half her 'folk' is black American, and musically a greater draw perhaps because she was raised in a very white world. (As was I, but I 'pass' -- disgusting expression, really, but that's another thread.)

Subject: RE: Seagull Guitars: How do they play? From: Lucius Date: 12 Jul 00 - 05:31 PM I helped Animaterra pick one out. By all reports, she still loves it. It was a good economical guitar, and perfect for the guitarist that is more interested in making music than spending money. Animatterra may still be lurking about the halls of Mudcatism. Give her a pop and say hi from me. Lucius |
