I'm looking for Unicorns as sung by June Tabor (I actually first heard this at Irish Week at Augusta Heritage Arts Workshop in 1984 (?) sung by Mick Maloney, so it's been out there for a while.) Not sure who wrote it. Such a good song I'm not sure why it's not in this collection yet...

Bekki, is that "Once there were Unicorns"? If it is, I once found it in DT, and it probably got pulled because we didn't have the songwriter's permission to have it here. If it is the one I think, it's by Bill Chaddick, and perhaps someone will post it.
blessings,
Barbara

Hope this might be the one you're thinking about - one of the most beautiful and haunting songs written in recent times. Happy singing!

I Dreamed There Were Unicorns
Bill Caddick

We were travelling north to sing and play
For friends that we had never met.
Been working hard and didn't speak
The sky was grey and threatened wet.
And I dreamed that I saw unicorns,
Dreamed I saw them wild and white.
Their sudden beauty lit the world
Like a star will light a winter's night.

Pure as love with manes of milk
They danced and pranced and cried aloud,
Bright as rainbows around the stars,
Their eyes were soft and sad and proud.

And I wept for the wild and dirty world
To which this beauty now was lost.
And cursed the hungry mind of man
That feeds the future at such cost.
My head was bowed, my eyes were closed,
When in my ears their voices rang,
And these few words lodged deep inside
And in my very soul they sang ....

"We never went away,
You always knew that we were near.
Remember how to look for us,
You'll see we were always here."

I raised my eyes to seek them out,
The world was empty all around.
The rain came tumbling from the sky.
It drowned all dreams upon the ground.
And when they asked me why I wept,
Like one who for his dead love mourns,
The only answer I could give -
I dreamed that there were unicorns.

"We never went away,
You always knew that we were near.
Remember how to look for us,
You'll see we were always here."^^^

Sorry about the lack of "line breaks" - my first time trying to post lyrics. I'll try the first "chorus" again. If you need me to re-post the rest (if it works this time!), just holler!

Pure as love with manes of milk.
They danced and pranced and cried aloud,
Bright as rainbows around the stars,
Their eyes were soft and sad and proud.

Bit of bacground - It dates back to his days with Magic Lantern. They were in the van travelling to a gig up north and he had said dream. As he tells the story he woke up with tears on his cheeks and when someone asked what the problem was he replied ' I dreamt there were unicorns' The song followed.

All the best

Steve

Thanks out there for the interest in the song "Unicorns". Your informant got the words and info just about right for once! The incident happened just before Christmas 1974 at the end of a long and exhausting tour with Magic Lantern and I was sleeping in the back of a smelly old van when I had the dream. I woke up just outside the massive chemical works around Middlesborough. Enough to make anyone weep, whether they'd been dreaming of unicorns or not! I actually wrote the song a week later just after Christmas. Hate to advertise...but... I'm partway through a retrospective album called (you guessed it) "Unicorns". Details on the new website which should be up andd running soon. bill caddick.co.uk cheers, Bill Caddick

This song has haunted me since I first heard it sung about 10 years ago by a brother/sister duo from Liverpool U.K. living at the time in the Portland OR (USA)area. They performed by the stage name Both Wilde (their last name was Wilde). They did an exquisite version of this and other tunes. I believe they may have gone back to England. Anyone come across these two lately?

Hey, Bill, wonderful to see you hear.

In case you pop in again - how about the words to "Lilli Marlene Walks Away" - I promised them to someone here but haven't had a chance to transcribe them from the tape.

The CD is good news, indeed. Any chance of an Urban Legend reunion? Possibly the best folk band I've ever heard!

Cheers!

George

Last time I searched the web for "Both Wild" I found an article entitled, "101 deseases that affect Both Wild and farmed animals", so seeing this thread was a pleasant surprise. We will be playing at artichoke music in Portland, Oregon on September 15th, 2001. We have a few songs on mp3.com/bothwild. We are joined by cellist Jim Smith.
