Subject: Song lyrics/info reqd From: sledge Date: 16 Jul 00 - 06:23 AM OK back to the music. I'm looking for info, lyrics and chords regarding a sing called "Dominion of the sword". It was an early recording by Show of hands attributed to the ever prolific Trad. arr. I've tried a lot of song searches on the net to no avail, can the Mudcatters help. PS. if anyone see's or know of a copy of the Sandy Denny cd "the BBC sessions" thats available for sale could you let me know the details. Cheers Stu |
Subject: RE: Song lyrics/info reqd From: Ed Pellow Date: 16 Jul 00 - 06:31 AM Stu, I've not heard the Shows of Hands version, but I assume it's the song that Martin Carthy rehashed from an old poem. If so, you can find the lyrics in this thread Ed |

Subject: RE: Song lyrics/info reqd From: catspaw49 Date: 16 Jul 00 - 10:15 AM Awhile back, there was a big(?) brouhaha over two different Denny bios. If you check back, someone posted some info on it.......Anybody got any updates on that? Spaw |
Subject: RE: Song lyrics/info reqd From: sledge Date: 16 Jul 00 - 11:18 AM Hi Noreen, thanks for the heads up but I am more interested in the BBC/strangefruit release as there are some otherwise unreleased live recordings (does that make sense?). The intimacy of the more bare bones stuff where Sandys voice is THE key element are the greatest, for instance I find the French language version of listen listen from the Attic tracks quite hypnotic and play it over and over. My French remains poor however. Spaw, there is now a biography on the market by music journo Clinton Heylin , apperntly it is V good, having the advantage of being given access to private diaries ETC. The other by Pam Winters was buried because it was reported to be very poorly written, riddled with inaccurate information and misquotes. It was available free on the net for a while but it got shut down. Whatever, as soon as I get home I'getting whichever is in the book store. |

I will keep my eyes/ ears open for info about the BBC sessions recording. Someone on the Fairport list or the Sandy Denny list will be bound to know. --Noreen |
Subject: RE: Song lyrics/info reqd From: Noreen Date: 16 Jul 00 - 03:16 PM Stu, I've just realised what the problem is; sorry for being slow on the uptake. Apparently it is only to be found now on market stalls etc. Have you tried eBay? Hope you find it --Noreen |

Subject: RE: Song lyrics/info reqd From: GUEST,Bruce O. Date: 17 Jul 00 - 03:42 PM "The Dominion of the Sword" is the title in a manuscript for a song printed in some songbooks as "The Power of the Sword" (e.g., Merry Drollery , 1661 and Rump Songs, I, p. 333, 1662. See ZN1612 in the broadside ballad index on my website for the source of several copies including a broadside ballad issue that you can find on the Bodley Ballads website. ABCs of two early versions of its tune are B247 and 275 on my website. www.erols.com.olsonw Be sure to note ZN1613 also.

Subject: RE: Song lyrics/info reqd From: GUEST,Saminus Date: 17 Jul 00 - 06:33 PM Can anybody help? For years now I have been haunted by a song which I heard sung at the Hare & Hounds Folk Club in Maghull nr Liverpool. Don't know whether the song is Irish folk, Lancashire folk, or what, but I'd love to know who sang it if anyone can help .. ? The lyrics I know go ".. my lady of autumn, sing me your song, play me your tune, tell me I'm wrong, tell me you dont mean the things that you say, tell me, we'll find a way". Please, someone put me out of my misery! |
