Here is what I remember: Beer, beer, beer, tiddly beer, beer, beer Anyone can fill in the holes? Correct what I've been hearing? ^^ |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: beer, beer, beer From: Ringer Date: 18 Jul 00 - 09:58 AM Oddly enough, I posted this in a recent thread on beer (a fortnight or three weeks ago?). I didn't know it was CB&TM, I thought it was music hall. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: beer, beer, beer From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 18 Jul 00 - 01:14 PM That would be HERE. I too have always believed the song to come from the Halls, and I still do; the Clanceys recorded the song years ago and may have altered the text and tune a bit (enough to claim a copyright, perhaps) but I really don't think that it's Irish; the tune is typically music hall. Anyone who has the booklet that came with The Tale of Ale may be able to help with more information; all I could find on the web were references to recordings of "Irish" drinking songs, most of which were actually English or Scots... Subject: RE: Lyr Req: beer, beer, beer From: Mrrzy Date: 20 Jul 00 - 12:24 AM Oh, I don't think the Clancys&TM claimed (c), I just meant that's whose version I had. Thanks for the blicky to the other thread, it was fun; I still can't stand beer, despite years and years of concerted effort to learn to get past the taste. Luckily (if you want to look at it that way) I do like liquor, so at least I'm not no fun at all. Not that I have anything against teetotalling, I just wouldn't do it by choice. Not as a lifetime choice, anyway. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: beer, beer, beer From: The Lighthouse Date: 20 Jul 00 - 12:19 PM Actually The Clancy's did this on an album called "Flowers in the Valley" after Tommy Makem had left the group. They redid it later with Robbie O'Connell. The only Clancy CD version I know is on a compilation of drinking songs by them and the Dubliners. |

Subject: Lyr Add: BEER, BEER, BEER From: Joe Offer Date: 20 Jul 00 - 07:37 PM Here are the lyrics Bald Eagle posted in the "BS: Beer" thread. Would somebody like to put them all together into a definitive version of the lyrics that can be added to the database? Is it just hops that gets repeated, or is it the last word of every stanza, or what? For that matter, is the title of Bald Eagle's lyrics "Beer, Beer, Beer? -Joe Offer- BEER, BEER, BEER A long time ago, way back in history, When all they had to drink was nothing but cups of tea, Along came a bloke by the name of Charlie Mopps, And he invented a wonderful drink and he made it out of hops (hops hops hops hops, etc). Chorus: Here in Chesterfield [substitute your own locale] we drink beer a lot. Chorus The Admiral, the Connaught, the Hole in the Wall as well; Chorus Music-hall, I presume, though I've only ever heard it from the singing of the late, great Dick Rendall, one time Squire of Manchester Morris Men. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beer, Beer, Beer (Charlie Mopps) From: Bob Bolton Date: 03 Apr 04 - 10:51 AM G'day Fergus, If the song does not appear in the Reedy River Song Book (at least, not any of the editions put out by the David Millis & John Meredith for the New Theatre). It may appear in other companies' production (eg - London production) ... but the Australian appearance of the song comes from the Bush Music Club's Singabout magzine, vo. 3, no. 3, p.7, Winter/Spring 1959, where it is credited as collected from the chief refrigeration engineer of the SS Tekoa in 1953 by Redd Sullivan. We considered it an English song (the SS Tekoa was English ... ?). Admittedley, by the 1960s Poms were saying they had never heard the song ... but they weren't on the SS Tekoa! Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beer, Beer, Beer (Charlie Mopps) From: Little Robyn Date: 03 Apr 04 - 04:38 PM Frank Fife, an Aussie import to NZ, used to sing it regularly at the Balladeer coffee bar in the 60s. His words were a little different as I recall but we always joined in lustily.... "So come along me lucky lads, at 10 o'clock she stops, For 5 short seconds remember Charlie Mops A-1, a-2, a-3,4,5, Well, he ought to be an admiral...." Our records suggest it might have something to do with John Forman, the Broadside King. Robyn |
Subject: Lyr Add: CHARLIE MOPPS From: GUEST Date: 03 Apr 04 - 11:49 PM Here's a different version. Most definitely music hall with the five second pause referred to by Robyn. Charlie Mopps. A long time ago way back in history, When all they had to drink was nothing but cups of tea, Along came a man and by the name of Charlie Mopps, And he invented a wonderful drink and he gave it the name of hops. Ch: Oh he should have been an emperor a Sultan or a King, And all his praises ever shall we sing, Oh look at what he's done for us, he's filled our hearts with cheer, God bless Charlie Mopps the man who invented beer. Phil. When beer was first invented it was very very dear, Fancy paying a chaser for a glorious glass of beer, People of the day were foolish so they say, They used to chew the hops and throw the beer away. You can talk about inventors of today being up to date, Our animated pictures and our photographs so great, But the greatest inventor of them all, to me is plain and clear, It's Charlie Mopps the man who invented beer. The day that Charlie died he came to Heaven's gate, He said to St Peter now tell me how I rate, Saint Peter looked at him and said now who the Hell are you, He said I'm Charlie Mopps, Saint Peter said straight through. At the Central Imperial the Riverside as well, One thing you can be sure it's Charlie's beer they sell, So come on all you lucky lads at ten-o-clock she stops, For five short seconds remember Charlie Mopps |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beer, Beer, Beer (Charlie Mopps) From: Bob Bolton Date: 04 Apr 04 - 06:40 AM G'day GUEST, Do you have any details on this particular version? It has extra verses we, in Australia, always took to be English (in fact, some were sent to Singabout Magazine by English subscribers ... but we were of the opinion that your fourth verse (The day that Charlie died ...) was written by one of our members. As the song seems to have bounced about between countries (common enough, when sailors were involved) it may be that the extra verse fed back to wherever you may be. Regards, Bob |

In that, he credits it to Redd Sullivan collecting off the chief refrigeration officer of the SS Takoa in 1953, as mentioned earlier. The Challenge Sonbook was a young Communist type of publication. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beer, Beer, Beer (Charlie Mopps) From: Bob Bolton Date: 21 Apr 04 - 02:06 AM G'day Fergie, I see that your recording is from the 1979 Sydney production of Reedy River ... the recording I was checking was from the 1954 Sydney production ... which did not use the song Charlie Mopps. As we (the Bush Music Club) published the song in 1959, it's entirely possible that the 1979 production decided to used the song (the script does not specify which songs are in the play) on the suggestion of one of the many Bush Music Club members involved in that production ... or, simply because the song had become so popular. (The BMC had a copyright run-in with our recording company after recording the song on a 1964 LP - The Club would not claim copyright, despite prompting to make such a claim by the record company's A & R men ... and, some time late, a 'pop' version appeared ... with copyright claimed by the same A & R men! We protested - and they withdrew their 'claim'.) It is interesting that Eric Winter's The Challenge Songbook also cites the collection of the song by Redd Sullivan, from the chief refrigeration officer of the SS Tekoa in 1953. I must reread our entry on the song ... it may be that publication in our Singabout magazine drew on other primary sources ... or that The Challenge Songbook drew on us ... who knows? (I'll try to find out!) BTW: Joe Offer - I remember the: "A bushel of hops... shilling and tuppence in tax" stanza as having: "Shame! Shame! Shame!" chanted after it (and before the standard chorus) in much the same way that "1,2,3-4-5" follows the "... ten o'clock she stops." stanza. Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beer, Beer, Beer (Charlie Mopps) From: Billy Weeks Date: 09 Jul 04 - 06:04 AM It sounds music hally, but I'm pretty sure it isn't. Classic music hall material (because of the activities of licensing and watch committees) rarely includes the name of God other than in sticky sentimental songs. My guess is that this is 1930s or later and probably originated with a Young Communist League song writer. I seem to remember it appearing in an early issue of 'Sing' magazine, but can't for the moment lay my hand on the copy. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beer, Beer, Beer (Charlie Mopps) From: Billy the Bus Date: 11 Jul 04 - 09:09 AM G'day, Thanks for reviving the thread Pete S, I'd missed it, and the song brings back many fond memories. Robyn - I;ve just emptied my pipe into a heavy brown earthenwarer ashtray - one of a pair Frank gave me the night the Balladeer closed. Remember them? Pre-1967 Frank used to sing ".. at 6 o'clock she stops" - remember the 'swill'? Warwick Brock (Rest his soul) persisted in ending the chorus.. .... he filled us all with bliss, ... Charlie Mopps - the man who invented P***! I think most of the verses Frank sang are enshrined in the later postings, and like you, I assume he brought them Trans-Tasman. Which leads to a question for... Bob Bolton - In a post above there was a mention of one F Winter in association with one of the Clancey versions. That would be Frank Winter, would it not? Frank Fyfe learned many of his somgs from him, if I recall right. Anyway.... on to... Redd Sullivan - What a Man!!! Ihe version I recall him singing many times, at Curly d'el Monte's Poles Apart in Auckland was akin to the one above... I'll leave it here - too many thoughts curdling my brain cell. In the Oak Publications "New English Broadsides" edited by Nathan Joseph and Eric WInter, he is credited with 6 songs of which he wrote the words of "Comealllye and Goback agai" with Stan Kelly; Ditto for "Four Ponds a Day"; the music for "The Hunters" words by Terry Gould; ditto for "I'll tell you where to put it if you like" words by ALex COmfort; ditto for "They let Delgado Die", music by Maurice Rosenbaum; and finally he is credited with "The Jolly Farmer" as Tradiotnal words and music adapted by Eric Winter. Seems like he was adapter, songwriter and music writer. Best regards, Dave Eyre www.collectorsfolk.co.uk |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beer, Beer, Beer (Charlie Mopps) From: Bob Bolton Date: 11 Jul 04 - 09:50 AM G'day, Bill Weeks: I'm sure the song never appeared on the British "legitimate" stage ... it would never get past the Lord Chancellor (or whoever issued imprimatur for acceptable stage fare. However, someone might argue that really classic music hall material was what happened, in the early part of the 1800s, before it went "legitimate" ... when a bunch of Cockneys would rent a shop front and turn it into a "music hall" ... until authority descended on them - and they scarpered with the takings and a rent bill (if not a bill for repairing the unauthorised "renovations"!). However, it probably comes out of the left end of working class ... and, obviously with the Redd Sullivan connection, the merchant marine (and maybe a Navy one too: " ... ought to be an Admiral ... &c ... ". The merchant marine connection certainly explains it turning up all round the world (even sapper82's Swedish "Balladen om Charlie Mopp"! Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beer, Beer, Beer (Charlie Mopps) From: GUEST,Barrie Roberts Date: 11 Jul 04 - 11:08 AM The late Eric Winter was quite q prolific songwriter, but sometimes amazingly shy about the product of his muse. For example, he wrote 'The Flowers of Manchester' to mourn the Manchester United crash in 1958, but published it anonymously. He also wrote the song that chills the blood of folkclub organisers === 'The Night That Nobody Came'. More to the 'Charlie Mopps' point, Eric also loved adding verses to things. The one that sticks in my memory is a new last verse to 'John McCafferty': So all you swaddies take advice from me, Treat your arms drill a lot more seriously, For if you do you might find that You'll hit the bastard you were aiming at! So it aint impossible that he added to somebody's version of 'Charlie Mopps', which, incidentally, I learned off aforementioned Redd Sullivan. Eric Winter wrote a handsome obituary for Redd in The Independent, which was followed up by The Guardian and The Times, no less. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beer, Beer, Beer (Charlie Mopps) From: Little Robyn Date: 12 Jul 04 - 03:22 AM Sam, Frank Winter is more likely to have learned it from Frank Fyfe, not the other way around. I think Frank Fyfe had mags or song books from the Bush Music Club and I'm pretty sure that's where he found it, and lots of others too. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beer, Beer, Beer (Charlie Mopps) From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 16 Dec 05 - 04:27 AM Have two threads been combined here? It's difficult to see why anyone would think it necessary to quote lyrics from a Pogues record three times in the same discussion, and from a Playstation game twice. Roy Palmer, incidentally (A Taste of Ale, Kencot (Gloucestershire):Green Branch Press, 2000, 277) notes that the song "was once widespread in oral tradition: for example, British soldiers in India sang it in the 1930s and '40s." The book is a light anthology rather than one of his scholarly works, and he gives no source for this assertion; nor does he seem to have known, at the time, of the earlier publications mentioned above. The set he quotes is transcribed from a recording by 'Brewers Dray' (Mopps Music cassette MM0112); no further details are given. It differs in many respects from the examples quoted earlier. The Clancy Brothers almost certainly got the song from an English or Australian source, and its recent popularity in Ireland likely derives from their recording of it. I should forget any Shakespearian connection if I were you. Palmer suggests possibly mid 19th century; his instincts are generally good, so it's very unlikely to be older than that; and, as has been suggested earlier here (the best history of the song you are liable to get, I suspect), likely enough to be rather more recent. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beer, Beer, Beer (Charlie Mopps) From: Scrump Date: 20 Apr 06 - 11:06 AM Sorry to be late on this thread, only just seen it. The song was recorded by the Fureys as "The Man Who Invented Beer" and from memory the lyrics were similar to those above (Charlie Mopps etc.). There was a different song recorded by Rolf Harris (don't know who wrote it or whether it was an Aussie song?) called "The Bloke Who Invented Beer". Anyone know anything about the latter song? |

More or less the same as the other versions but shorter and easy to remember. Now many years ago There was nowt but misery All that people had to drink Was ginger beer and tea Until there came upon this earth A man named Charlie Mopps And he discovered this wonderful stuff He gave it the name of "hops" Now when he first learnt to brew the stuff He called it "bungaloo" And if you had the dibs* On the tiddly* you would go Now all you tiddly people That are sitting here Go down upon your knees and bless The man who invented beer Oh he ought t'been an emporor A sultan or a king And of his praises we shall always sing For see what he has done for us He's filled our hearts with cheeer God bless Charlie Mopps The man who invented beer. *Dibs = money Tiddly = Piss/pissed (for U.S. drunk) |

It was collected by Redd Sullivan from the Chief Refrigeration Engineer on the SS Tekoa in 1953. The second verse was written by BMC member Peter Francis, and the last verse sent by an English contributor Tam Murrell from Twickenham. BMC members localised the pub names and it became almost the theme song of the club and is still wildly popular 60 years later. |
