I have it by The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. I ws *shocked, shocked* to find it missing from the Trad. Here is what I remember:

That would be  HERE.  I too have always believed the song to come from the Halls, and I still do; the Clanceys recorded the song years ago and may have altered the text and tune a bit (enough to claim a copyright, perhaps) but I really don't think that it's Irish; the tune is typically music hall.  Anyone who has the booklet that came with The Tale of Ale may be able to help with more information; all I could find on the web were references to recordings of "Irish" drinking songs, most of which were actually English or Scots...

Oh, I don't think the Clancys&TM claimed (c), I just meant that's whose version I had. Thanks for the blicky to the other thread, it was fun; I still can't stand beer, despite years and years of concerted effort to learn to get past the taste. Luckily (if you want to look at it that way) I do like liquor, so at least I'm not no fun at all. Not that I have anything against teetotalling, I just wouldn't do it by choice. Not as a lifetime choice, anyway.

Actually The Clancy's did this on an album called "Flowers in the Valley" after Tommy Makem had left the group. They redid it later with Robbie O'Connell. The only Clancy CD version I know is on a compilation of drinking songs by them and the Dubliners.

If the song does not appear in the Reedy River Song Book (at least, not any of the editions put out by the David Millis & John Meredith for the New Theatre).

It may appear in other companies' production (eg - London production) ... but the Australian appearance of the song comes from the Bush Music Club's Singabout magzine, vo. 3, no. 3, p.7, Winter/Spring 1959, where it is credited as collected from the chief refrigeration engineer of the SS Tekoa in 1953 by Redd Sullivan.

We considered it an English song (the SS Tekoa was English ... ?). Admittedley, by the 1960s Poms were saying they had never heard the song ... but they weren't on the SS Tekoa!

Frank Fife, an Aussie import to NZ, used to sing it regularly at the Balladeer coffee bar in the 60s. His words were a little different as I recall but we always joined in lustily....

Our records suggest it might have something to do with John Forman, the Broadside King.

Do you have any details on this particular version? It has extra verses we, in Australia, always took to be English (in fact, some were sent to Singabout Magazine by English subscribers ... but we were of the opinion that your fourth verse (The day that Charlie died ...) was written by one of our members.

As the song seems to have bounced about between countries (common enough, when sailors were involved) it may be that the extra verse fed back to wherever you may be.

Eric Winter edited "The Challenge Songbook"(not sure of the date, but it cost me half a crown) in which "Charley Mopps" appeared. In that, he credits it to Redd Sullivan collecting off the chief refrigeration officer of the SS Takoa in 1953, as mentioned earlier. The Challenge Sonbook was a young Communist type of publication.

This is the source of my belief that the Charlie Mopps is an Australian Traditional song.

I had a very minor backstage contribution to this production, as a member of the AMWSU and the then Young Socialist League I became involved in setchanging and stagehand work. I was a young migrant worker to Australia at the time and the experience gave me a good introduction to the modern Australian tradition and fostered in me a deep affection for Australian folk and bushmusic.

I see that your recording is from the 1979 Sydney production of Reedy River ... the recording I was checking was from the 1954 Sydney production ... which did not use the song Charlie Mopps. As we (the Bush Music Club) published the song in 1959, it's entirely possible that the 1979 production decided to used the song (the script does not specify which songs are in the play) on the suggestion of one of the many Bush Music Club members involved in that production ... or, simply because the song had become so popular.

(The BMC had a copyright run-in with our recording company after recording the song on a 1964 LP - The Club would not claim copyright, despite prompting to make such a claim by the record company's A & R men ... and, some time late, a 'pop' version appeared ... with copyright claimed by the same A & R men! We protested - and they withdrew their 'claim'.)

It is interesting that Eric Winter's The Challenge Songbook also cites the collection of the song by Redd Sullivan, from the chief refrigeration officer of the SS Tekoa in 1953. I must reread our entry on the song ... it may be that publication in our Singabout magazine drew on other primary sources ... or that The Challenge Songbook drew on us ... who knows? (I'll try to find out!)

BTW: Joe Offer - I remember the: "A bushel of hops... shilling and tuppence in tax" stanza as having: "Shame! Shame! Shame!" chanted after it (and before the standard chorus) in much the same way that "1,2,3-4-5" follows the "... ten o'clock she stops." stanza.

It sounds music hally, but I'm pretty sure it isn't. Classic music hall material (because of the activities of licensing and watch committees) rarely includes the name of God other than in sticky sentimental songs. My guess is that this is 1930s or later and probably originated with a Young Communist League song writer. I seem to remember it appearing in an early issue of 'Sing' magazine, but can't for the moment lay my hand on the copy.

Robyn - I;ve just emptied my pipe into a heavy brown earthenwarer ashtray - one of a pair Frank gave me the night the Balladeer closed. Remember them? Pre-1967 Frank used to sing ".. at 6 o'clock she stops" - remember the 'swill'? Warwick Brock (Rest his soul) persisted in ending the chorus..

I think most of the verses Frank sang are enshrined in the later postings, and like you, I assume he brought them Trans-Tasman. Which leads to a question for...

Bob Bolton - In a post above there was a mention of one F Winter in association with one of the Clancey versions. That would be Frank Winter, would it not? Frank Fyfe learned many of his somgs from him, if I recall right. Anyway.... on to...

Redd Sullivan - What a Man!!! Ihe version I recall him singing many times, at Curly d'el Monte's Poles Apart in Auckland was akin to the one above...

In the Oak Publications "New English Broadsides" edited by Nathan Joseph and Eric WInter, he is credited with 6 songs of which he wrote the words of "Comealllye and Goback agai" with Stan Kelly; Ditto for "Four Ponds a Day"; the music for "The Hunters" words by Terry Gould; ditto for "I'll tell you where to put it if you like" words by ALex COmfort; ditto for "They let Delgado Die", music by Maurice Rosenbaum; and finally he is credited with "The Jolly Farmer" as Tradiotnal words and music adapted by Eric Winter.

Seems like he was adapter, songwriter and music writer.

Bill Weeks: I'm sure the song never appeared on the British "legitimate" stage ... it would never get past the Lord Chancellor (or whoever issued imprimatur for acceptable stage fare. However, someone might argue that really classic music hall material was what happened, in the early part of the 1800s, before it went "legitimate" ... when a bunch of Cockneys would rent a shop front and turn it into a "music hall" ... until authority descended on them - and they scarpered with the takings and a rent bill (if not a bill for repairing the unauthorised "renovations"!).

However, it probably comes out of the left end of working class ... and, obviously with the Redd Sullivan connection, the merchant marine (and maybe a Navy one too: " ... ought to be an Admiral ... &c ... ". The merchant marine connection certainly explains it turning up all round the world (even sapper82's Swedish "Balladen om Charlie Mopp"!

The late Eric Winter was quite q prolific songwriter, but sometimes amazingly shy about the product of his muse. For example, he wrote 'The Flowers of Manchester' to mourn the Manchester United crash in 1958, but published it anonymously. He also wrote the song that chills the blood of folkclub organisers === 'The Night That Nobody Came'.

More to the 'Charlie Mopps' point, Eric also loved adding verses to things. The one that sticks in my memory is a new last verse to 'John McCafferty':

So all you swaddies take advice from me,
Treat your arms drill a lot more seriously,
For if you do you might find that
You'll hit the bastard you were aiming at!

So it aint impossible that he added to somebody's version of 'Charlie Mopps', which, incidentally, I learned off aforementioned Redd Sullivan. Eric Winter wrote a handsome obituary for Redd in The Independent, which was followed up by The Guardian and The Times, no less.

I have it, its awesome.

The curious thing is that i first herad this song at a Playstation 2 game, called The Bard´s Tale.
They put some diferent words but its the same song. I learned how to sing but playing.
