Subject: Advice - Forever Young- best version

I went to my brother-in-law's funeral last week. My nieces had made inspired and very pertinent choices of music. The Byrds - Turn, turn, turn (I have it on 45)(and a player): Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven (found it on tape down the road), and Bob Dylan - Forever Young. I've found there are several versions, and I'm going to have to order it on tape. Does anyone have any thoughts on the best version to go for? I can't tell from the samples on web-sites.

They had Auden's "Stop all the Clocks" too. All was very moving.

Planet Waves has two versions of it - a fast one and a slow one. I usually prefer the slower version - but then it really depends on my mood. Anyway - buying Planet Waves would give you 'two for the price of one'.

(I would tape it for you, but I don't have a tape-to-tape. I've just spent all my disposable income on a computer!)

Good luck

Catrin

I haven't hear the non Dylan versions, but I'd recommend Planet Waves. It's one of my favourite Dylan records, though I know some peope dopn't like. It was recorded in the run I believe - the just went in and recorded in one extended session, and if that's true it explains the unity of feel its got.

Thanks, so far. I really want to get the whole of a tape, to get the piece in its own context.

There's also a nice recording of the song on Peter, Paul & Mary's Reunion (click) album, which is available only on cassette. I also like the Baez recording.
If you go to a place like CDNOW (click) or Amazon (click), you'll find all sorts of recordings of the song. Just make sure you have "song title" selected in the search box.

I think that each cut on Tim O'Brien's Red on Blonde is the best version of that Dylan song. And Forever Young is on there. But some would probably say I'm irrationally prejudiced. ....if they can't take a joke.

Peter.
