Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: gillymor Date: 25 Jan 17 - 09:32 AM At the very beginning of this 1:16 minute video you'll hear "Here He Comes, Here He Comes". Click here |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: Senoufou Date: 25 Jan 17 - 09:17 AM Richard, "Here he comes! Here he comes! There's the trumpets! There's the drums! Here he comes!" (or something similar) I think it's on Youtube. |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: Steve Parkes Date: 25 Jan 17 - 09:17 AM Richard, I could hum the tune -- as could you, I'm sure -- but I can only remember the same words as you! |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: gillymor Date: 25 Jan 17 - 08:58 AM I haven't read through this entire thread and someone may have already linked the The Great Western TV Medley by the excellent Guy Van Duser. Recognize any of the tunes? |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: GUEST,Richard Date: 25 Jan 17 - 08:47 AM From way, way back in this thread; Hopalong Cassidy did have a song, but all I remember is Hopalong Cassidy, clippety clippety clop.! Any help? Richard |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: Steve Parkes Date: 24 Jan 17 - 06:00 PM Tunesmith, Sugarfoot/Tenderfoot: one was on BBC and the other on ITV, and in that order, I think. And at almost the same time, which seemed rather silly at the time. It could have been a clash with a different show with a similar name. |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: GUEST,pauperback Date: 24 Jan 17 - 02:21 AM It gave me great pause when he told me this, being a naive just turned 18 year old, especially when he say "with real guns". I always liked the Bonanza theme song, and galloped around the front room every Sunday night. |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: GUEST,pauperback Date: 23 Jan 17 - 11:28 PM Sgt. Brisbois told me once they used to go to Yakima to play cowboys and Indians, him being from the rez. |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 23 Jan 17 - 08:49 AM For some reason, certain tv westerns were renamed in the UK. For example, Gunsmoke became Gun Law, and Sugarfoot became Tenderfoot. |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: ranger1 Date: 22 Jan 17 - 07:18 PM Local TV station plays a bunch of the older westerns from 5 AM until noon here. Cisco Kid, Trackdown, Cheyenne, two episodes of Wanted: Dead or Alive, two episodes of Have Gun, Will Travel, Rawhide, Wagon Train, and Maverick. Rawhide recently replaced The High Chaparral and Maverick replaced Daniel Boone a couple of weeks ago (much to my delight). And on Sundays, the same station has Stagecoach West, Branded, The Rebel, Broken Arrow, and Yancy Derringer. Most of these shows aired 20 or so years before I was born, but I do love 'em! |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: Senoufou Date: 22 Jan 17 - 04:04 PM I used to love The Lone Ranger with his ...er...'Red Indian' (sorry) friend Tonto. The music was of course Rossini's 'William Tell Overture' but it was years before we'd believe it wasn't Lone Ranger's tune. We'd gallop about in the school playground, slapping our own bottoms on an imaginary Silver, pretending to be him, wearing a home-made mask, and humming the tune. Cowboys-and-Indians was one of our favourite games, The boys used to be the cowboys and us girls were allocated the role of Indians. (It was the early fifties, and nobody intended any insult to Native Americans; we'd never heard that term.) |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: GUEST,pauperback Date: 21 Jan 17 - 04:04 PM Indians called horses big dogs, ( http://www.indianhorse.com/?page_id=46 ), maybe cattle too? We called our Appaloosa Skookum . John Belushi (R.I.P.) & Dan Aykroyd did a great cover in the Blues Brothers with John providing excellent whip-cracking. |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: Senoufou Date: 21 Jan 17 - 02:45 PM I also remember 'Rawhide' with Rowdy Yates (a very young Clint Eastwood) "rollin' rollin' rollin' though the streams are swollen, keep them dawgies rollin, rawhide!" (loud whipcrack!) We used to wonder why the Americans called cows dogs!! |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: Senoufou Date: 21 Jan 17 - 02:39 PM Oh, Georgiansilver, I've got a tear in my eye now after listening to that! We used to try and sing it with an American accent. Being little Cockneys it must have sounded ridiculous :) Thank you so much! |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: Georgiansilver Date: 21 Jan 17 - 02:27 PM There ya go Guest Senoufou. A Four Legged Friend.. Roy Rogers. |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: GUEST,Senoufou Date: 21 Jan 17 - 02:20 PM I well remember Roy Rogers and his horse Trigger. The song was "A Four-Legged Friend". I was horse-mad as a girl, and loved this song. Also Wagon Train I really quite fancied Robert Horton, but so did my friend Linda and we argued over him constantly (as if he cared!). The song for that was rather boring, "Wagon train, wagon train, keep a-rolling wagon train". |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns, Daniel Boone From: GUEST,Mister Reader Date: 21 Jan 17 - 12:29 PM I should have added that, yes, "Daniel Boone (The Daddy Of Them All)" is best described as a pop spin-off of the Davy Crockett craze, as noted by Genie on January 13, 2012. I found the following text excerpt on Newspapers.com. Misspellings are from their computer conversion. https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/155550733/ WILMINGTON MORNING NEWS, WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, FRIDAY, JUNE 24. 1955 PAGE 15 Just how long the Crockett craze will reign is hard to guess, but so far Davy's No. 1 spot In the hearts of young Americans has weathered every challenge, the latest one being the defiant musical claim, "Daniel Boone was the Daddy of them all," which, apparently, hasn't even made a dent in the solid Crockett fan line. Obviously, this pre-teen-age loyalty is not to be underestimated. When kids go to bed with coonskin caps in weather like this, it's the real McCoy. For collectors of choice cou now nis lame has been only comparable to that of Ponce de Leon, Captain John Smith or Nathan Hale. Don't misunderstand ... no one's trying te minimize the greatness of any one of these men, but certainly no one not even the father of our country has been the object of such rabid adulation by youngsters as Daw Crockett. |

Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: Genie Date: 13 Jan 12 - 01:13 PM Well, if we're counting Disney's Davy Crockett as a "western" TV show, I guess Dan'l Boone would count too. But the song I remember was "Daniel Boone was the daddy of them all, Was the daddy of them all, Was the daddy of them all, Daniel Boone heard the western forests call, From the mountains to the Ohio!" DK if that was the theme song from the TV show, though. Maybe just a pop spin-off from the hit "Ballad Of Davy Crockett" song from the Disney TV show. |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns From: GUEST Date: 13 Jan 12 - 07:05 AM Not a western but Daniel Boone was a man yes a big man. He was brave, he was fearless and as tough as a might oak tree. From the coonskin cap on top of Old Dan to the heel of his rawhide shoes. He was the rippingest roaringest fightingest man the frontier ever knew. |

Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns....... From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 17 Aug 04 - 10:46 AM I'm sure "Lawman" will have been mentioned in this thread. John Russell played Marshall Dan Troop - and he really looked the part of a Western hero. " The Lawman came with the the sun, there was a job to be done, so they sent for the man with the badge and the gun of the Lawman!" That opening song used to give me quite a thrill back then. |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns....... From: SINSULL Date: 16 Aug 04 - 11:05 PM I found the lyrics on a website but yes - what you posted rings a bell. The kind people on Tom Tryon's website are trying to track down the texas John Slaughter lyrics. We'll see. |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns....... From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 16 Aug 04 - 10:20 PM You left out this stanza which I do remember. I believe it is the second one. A man of steel the stories say And women's eyes all cast his way The man who had the fastest gun His name was Bat, Bat Masterson Does this ring a bell for you ? SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns....... From: SINSULL Date: 16 Aug 04 - 08:36 PM Bat Masterson Theme Back when the west was very young, There lived a man named Masterson. He wore a cane and derby hat, They called him Bat, Bat Masterson. The trail that he blazed is still there. No one has come since, to replace his name. And those with too ready a trigger, Forgot to figure on his marching home. Now in the legend of the west, One name stands out of all the rest. The man who had the fastest gun, His name was Bat, Bat Masterson. |

Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns....... From: SINSULL Date: 15 Aug 04 - 11:51 AM I just passed up an LP called BONANZA. It included the theme song and some other music from the series. If anyone wants it I can probably get it - there didn't seem to be a lot of LP buyers. |

Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns....... From: GUEST,Xristos47, christoskz@hotmail.com Date: 14 Aug 04 - 11:25 PM Just a small correction I offer. The Mike Fink song didn't have the words "women: and "bold" in it. 'Twent like dis: Girls run and hide,/ and brave men shiver;/ I'm Mike Fink,/ King of the River! I, too, was a Davy Crockett--how shall I put it?--aficionado! Well, I was a lunatic. I was about seven or eight when the rage spread. I figured at the end that Davy wiped out the entire Mexican army. Well, I wanted to figure that, but part of me knew he died, Davy did. By the way, his motto was more accurately as follows: << Be always sure you're right, then go ahead. >> I have adopted it as one of my own, along with Archimedes's << Do not disturb my circles. >> I've been trying to find the complete lyrics to Texas John Slaughter and Elfego "El Gato" Baca, by the way. Here's a song I ain't seen mentioned yet--- Who is that tall dark stranger there?/ Maverick is the name./ Ridin' the trail to who knows where,/ Luck is his companion, gamblin'is his game./ Smooth as the barrel of a gun--/ Maverick is the name./ Wild as the wind in Oregon/ Whipping down a canyon,/ Easier to tame./ Riverboat ring your bell--/ Fare thee well, Annabelle,/ Luck is the lady that he loves the best--/ Natchez to New Orleans/ Livin' off Jacks and Queens,/ Maverick is the Legend of the West!/ And on that note, I close and depart---Xristos |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns....... From: Bat Goddess Date: 13 Dec 00 - 10:38 AM If it wasn't Kurt Russell, I think it was someone who looked like him. I'd love to know the rest of the song; that one verse keeps popping out of my head when I least expect it for the past almost 40 years and I'd love to acquire a recording or at least the rest of the words. Got to find and dust off my copy of the book "The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters" and see if it was a tv tie-in. The coupla good lines I remember from the book are, "Absence of heartbeat, small round blue hole in forehead. Diagnosis: dead (of gunshot wound). Treatment: Folded hands on chest, closed eyes and laid copper coins in eyelids." Bat Goddess |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns....... From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 13 Dec 00 - 12:55 AM Bronco Layne was a replacement for Cheyenne when Clint Walker went on strike for better wages. Ty Hardin was the star. "Born down around the old Panhandle, Texas is where he grew to fame; There ain't a horse that he can't handle; That's how he got his name. Bronco, Bronco, Bronco Layne." Can anyone name at least three actors to portray the Lone Ranger? Wasn't Kurt Russell Jaimie McPheeters? All the best. Seamus |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns....... From: Bat Goddess Date: 12 Dec 00 - 01:20 PM Anyone remember the short lived "Travels of Jaimie McPheters"? It was based on a book I read many years later. It's hard to convey the tone of a joke with this flat medium of typed words only. |
Subject: RE: Songs from TV westerns....... From: DougR Date: 10 Aug 00 - 12:38 PM Bud Savoie: You're right! I was wrong! It was 26 Men I was thinking about, starring Tris Coffin and a young man Russ Hayden found working in a local department store here in Phoenix. I can't remember his name and I'm not sure he ever appeared in anything else. 16 Men didn't look quite look right when I typed it, but it was rather late at night, etc. etc. As an aside, Hayden and I lunched together one day to discuss the possiblility of the Phoenix Symphony recording a two minute intro for a new series he was pitching the network. We were interested (the symphony) but it would have required Hayden paying the same Union scale that would be required had he used the New York Philharmonic, (admittedly a bit better orchestra) so he had it recorded in Mexico.
