Tunesmith, Sugarfoot/Tenderfoot: one was on BBC and the other on ITV, and in that order, I think. And at almost the same time, which seemed rather silly at the time. It could have been a clash with a different show with a similar name.

I always liked the Bonanza theme song, and galloped around the front room every Sunday night.

For some reason, certain tv westerns were renamed in the UK.
For example, Gunsmoke became Gun Law, and Sugarfoot became Tenderfoot.

Local TV station plays a bunch of the older westerns from 5 AM until noon here. Cisco Kid, Trackdown, Cheyenne, two episodes of Wanted: Dead or Alive, two episodes of Have Gun, Will Travel, Rawhide, Wagon Train, and Maverick. Rawhide recently replaced The High Chaparral and Maverick replaced Daniel Boone a couple of weeks ago (much to my delight). And on Sundays, the same station has Stagecoach West, Branded, The Rebel, Broken Arrow, and Yancy Derringer. Most of these shows aired 20 or so years before I was born, but I do love 'em!

I used to love The Lone Ranger with his ...er...'Red Indian' (sorry) friend Tonto. The music was of course Rossini's 'William Tell Overture'
but it was years before we'd believe it wasn't Lone Ranger's tune. We'd gallop about in the school playground, slapping our own bottoms on an imaginary Silver, pretending to be him, wearing a home-made mask, and humming the tune. Cowboys-and-Indians was one of our favourite games, The boys used to be the cowboys and us girls were allocated the role of Indians.

(It was the early fifties, and nobody intended any insult to Native Americans; we'd never heard that term.)

I also remember 'Rawhide' with Rowdy Yates (a very young Clint Eastwood) "rollin' rollin' rollin' though the streams are swollen, keep them dawgies rollin, rawhide!" (loud whipcrack!) We used to wonder why the Americans called cows dogs!!

I well remember Roy Rogers and his horse Trigger. The song was "A Four-Legged Friend". I was horse-mad as a girl, and loved this song.

Also Wagon Train I really quite fancied Robert Horton, but so did my friend Linda and we argued over him constantly (as if he cared!). The song for that was rather boring, "Wagon train, wagon train, keep a-rolling wagon train".

Well, if we're counting Disney's Davy Crockett as a "western" TV show, I guess Dan'l Boone would count too. But the song I remember was

DK if that was the theme song from the TV show, though. Maybe just a pop spin-off from the hit "Ballad Of Davy Crockett" song from the Disney TV show.

I'm sure "Lawman" will have been mentioned in this thread. John Russell played Marshall Dan Troop - and he really looked the part of a Western hero.

I, too, was a Davy Crockett--how shall I put it?--aficionado! Well, I was a lunatic. I was about seven or eight when the rage spread. I figured at the end that Davy wiped out the entire Mexican army. If it wasn't Kurt Russell, I think it was someone who looked like him. I'd love to know the rest of the song; that one verse keeps popping out of my head when I least expect it for the past almost 40 years and I'd love to acquire a recording or at least the rest of the words. Got to find and dust off my copy of the book "The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters" and see if it was a tv tie-in. The coupla good lines I remember from the book are, "Absence of heartbeat, small round blue hole in forehead. Diagnosis: dead (of gunshot wound). Treatment: Folded hands on chest, closed eyes and laid copper coins in eyelids."

Bronco Layne was a replacement for Cheyenne when Clint Walker went on strike for better wages. Ty Hardin was the star. Anyone remember the short lived "Travels of Jaimie McPheters"? It was based on a book I read many years later. With Dan O'Hirlihy and i don't remember who played Jaimie McPheters,

Bud Savoie: You're right! I was wrong! It was 26 Men I was thinking about, starring Tris Coffin and a young man Russ Hayden found working in a local department store here in Phoenix. I can't remember his name and I'm not sure he ever appeared in anything else. 16 Men didn't look quite look right when I typed it, but it was rather late at night, etc. etc.

As an aside, Hayden and I lunched together one day to discuss the possiblility of the Phoenix Symphony recording a two minute intro for a new series he was pitching the network. We were interested (the symphony) but it would have required Hayden paying the same Union scale that would be required had he used the New York Philharmonic, (admittedly a bit better orchestra) so he had it recorded in Mexico.
