Rehydration powders. My friend is a pharmacist, and that's what she takes for hangovers. Puts all the electrolytes back in your body. Or something. Dioralyte is the brand name I remember.

Lox, I'm sorry about your head.

This won't cure a hangover, but I heard that if you drink a lot of water while imbibing, you'll be much less likely to get a hangover in the first place. Does that defeat the whole purpose of the exercise?

Yep, Dioralyte is the stuff, though any of the oral rehydrates used normaly for diarrhoea will do.

I discovered during my Navy days that a huge greasy breakfast helps, and quickly too, if you can even face them or keep them down that is.

Any way I know how you feel, it does get better.

In my student days many of my friends used to swear by Irn Bru. But it had to be the proper stuff and come in a glass bottle.

I seem to remember that the best way was not to go to sleep at all - so the tiredness overpowered the hangover.

Best move is to drink a pint of water b4 you go to bed. If you wake up in the night and need a pee, have another pint of water then. And another when you wake up in the morning. It may seem excessive, but it'll have you rehydrated in some decent time. The pint of water b4 bed is always the important one, though.

Incidentally, if your tummy's a little rough in the morning, try drinking milk instead. Settles it down a bit, and there's loads of minerals and stuff in there to replace what you've lost during the binge.

Grab.

Grab's right. Rehydration is the key. The more water you can drink the better. And a couple of aspirin a bedtime helps too
Do NOT drink more alcohol- "the hair of the hound that bit you" school of cure-'cause that pust prolongs the payback. Of course if you hadn't had so much to drink in the FIRST place..but we won't go there.

troll-who has tried 'em all.

Rehydration, aspirin, and a Coke Slurpee or Icee. THEN a big greasy breakfast. If you're drinkin' the good stuff, you won't get a hangover.

What usually causes the worst part of the hangover is hypoglycemia. American bourbons and whiskeys (and cheap booze in general) use sugar and corn syrup to help flavor the swill. Most American "beers" are full of preservatives, which often times will cause an allergic reaction.

Hope you get some relief!

There's a medication you can take prophylactically to prevent hangovers: It's called sulfadenial.

Back in the days when I could down American "swill" with the best of 'em, I found if I drank as much water as I could force down before I went to bed, it wasn't so bad the next day. If I didn't do that, then Alka-Seltzer worked wonders, along with great quantities of water. It also helps to dunk your head in a sinkful of cold water, but be careful when you raise back up! *BG*

guinesschik, you may have a point about the additives. I've never had a hangover from good moonshine, slept for a couple of days, but no hangover. In general, too, I found that if I drank liquor straight the consquences were far less severe.

giac (who no longer swills, but won't turn down a small sip of corn squeezin's - if I know where it came from)

Well, of course, the best way is not to get one in the first place! Oh, yeah, like I'm one to talk. Truly, I can count on less than one hand the number of times I've had a hangover in the last 15 years... the last time was on an expensive bottle of sherry and it was absolutely The Worst!!! I don't think I did anything but lay around and feel pitiful and drink orange juice.

Needless to say, I still love sherry, but I pay a LOT more attention to how much I imbibe. And try not to do it on an empty stomach! :)

Coca-cola does help quite a bit, whether its slurpee/icee or liquid. No one has mentioned tanking up on water BEFORE you go out partying, that helps too. Stay away from high sugar drinks and carbonation, espcially in combination, such as Rum and Coke. The sugar and the carbo work together to try to really kill you. I just swithced back to "Near Beer". That works too.

Yup, the sugar will kill you. I discovered that fresh baked chocolate chip cookies taste wonderful with Guinness. Worst hangover I've had since I started drinking the good stuff. (But you really should try a little taste.)

I've always been curious about the recipe for a "hobnailed liver". An English hangover cure from the thirties, I'm assuming, since it's mentioned in Dorothy Sayers' "Gaudy Night."

Incidentally, if you ever feel hungover after eating a bag of cookies, you should get yourself checked for hypoglycemia. And seriously consider quit drinking alcohol. Sugar problems and alcoholism seem to be connected.

This thread is timely for me - just off to Fylde folk festival (tomorrow - oh joy oh joy, I've been loking forward to this for a year!) and, since I don't seem to be able to find a shop that sells sulfadenial or any of the more efficient hangover prevention remedies, I think I may just pop along to the chemist for some dioralyte, alka seltza and resolve - just to be safe.

I have found that taking a large glass of water or gatorade and 2 or 3 aspirin before going to bed seems to prevent my hangovers. Also staying away from drinks mixed with sodas, ginger ales, sprites anything with sugar in it to sweeten the taste is a good idea, drinks made with tonic or club soda or water are good to have the effects are not as long lasting as the sweet drinks. The only problem I seem to have the next day is that I feel like I weigh 700 pounds and have an great thirst for water, which I hate with a passion but drink anyway.

My condolences on your condition, I have been there before and probably will be again.

Taking vitamin B6 helps. But nothing is better than Giac's method - Take at least one glass of water BEFORE going to bed.

On the real bad ones where you can't face anything to eat or drink, you can sometimes squeeze down a little 'Sunday Morning Coffee' That's coffee with a shot of bourbon. That can help getting you started, and you can switch to water after that.

You probably don't want to hear this, but the best cure I've found is exercise. I used to play hockey Sunday mornings when I was in my early twenties, a time that many of us sepnt Saturday nights seeing how stupid we could get. There were many mornings I could barely get my equipment on I felt so bad, but after a few minutes of fairly strenuous activity, I felt much better.

Perhaps this is why we get the "Hangover Hornies"

Actually it is quite possible to suffer hangovers without touching a drop of alcohol...as there are many other substances that can cause the same effects; among them tea, coffee, tobacco, chocolate (yes, chocolate), also some laxatives, many diuretics...

bert,

Could you please tell me the name of the enzyme that processes the B vitamins? Thanks.

No, Little Hawk, only Massingill Douche takes care of skunk spray. That's what we used at the veterinary hospital where I worked many years ago. They sent me one time to buy several gallons of it.

Can you imagine my embarassment as I'm standing at the check out counter with gallons of Massingill Douche? "This isn't for me, it's for dogs." Also, I've been sprayed by skunks twice, myself (a long story), and I found that tomato juice made the smell even more unbearable.

Water and B vitamins cured the only (small) headache I ever had after drinking. (Oh, and my allergy pills probably helped that, too.) Red wine is a killer for me in Ragweed season, doesn't matter how much I have - ouch!
I don't drink to get drunk though. My dad was an alkie and I was always too aware of that to let go. I drink for the taste and the company.
Prevention is the best cure, eh?
You can always try amethysts...

I never liked the cold shower routine, but a swim in Georgian Bay always worked, maybe because of the exercise thing mentioned above combined with the instant cold splash and rehydration from the outside pores inward. Depending on the season, rolling naked in the snow might work, though I've never tried it, I've got enough trouble without attrcting the police. Then again, maybe it's all in my head.

Yeah, and the raw egg before and after bed. (Just punch a hole in one end and suck, suck that egg.) Lotsa water before and after sleep, Aspirin too.

Hair of the dog only works if you don't ever stop, so it obviously hasn't worked for me, though if someone would like a test subject, my rates are very affordable.

What were we talking about? Mooh.

I too drink for the taste and the company. I got somewhat of a hangover once (a mild one, I suppose) after drinking maybe 4 beers...at the most. And I don't even like beer. Yuck.

I did not know about Massingill Douche. Interesting. I know what douche is...but what the heck is a "massingill"???...sounds like a very large hound of some sort to me. :-)

Ow-oooooooooo! The Hound of the Massingills!

I don't reckon the dogs cared one way or another.....although I could be wrong. And what does it tell you about the condition of the orifice its actually supposed to clean when it works so well on skunk odor? There's about 42 jokes here, but I'll belay them.

And for those of you hungover....Here's a thought......Get Stoned!!! You'll feel much better and it won't matter how much you drank last night if you're goofed up today! Think about it....

Cultivate a taste for better wines. Not so hazardous to your head or health, but a fine companion to a good dinner.
Alcohol is great once you learn to use it correctly. Of course I am an old fart now so I can preach to the youngsters. And I am sure they will listen to me better than I listned to the voices of experience years ago!

You need to be careful about hydrating with lots and lots of water. Depending on the size of your frame, you can deplete your electrolytes with too much straight water. Better to do the Gatorade or similar stuff with some salts and minerals in it. If you get your potassium off even a bit, it can cause serious problems with such things as your heart's rhythm. So whether you're rehydrating from physical activity or dumb drinking, beward flushing too many minerals out of your system. (Learned this the hard way when cycling.)

And what the hell are the "hangover hornies?" Is that a guy thing? I've had a couple of near-death hangovers in my life (and plan never, ever to have another) and sex would have been right there with "another shot of tequila" in the basement of my list of priorities.

I agree with Spaw. Herbs are much less toxic to your bod.

My suggestions were going to be:

Not mixing your drinks during.
More water after.
Then sex and/or bananas the next morning.

But they've all been mentioned already (maybe not in that combination). Ah well - it works for me.

The best cure for hangovers is to drink slowly, and stay drunk, it might be helpfull to live close to a liqur store so move and very important to live alone so no one will wake you up early and for god sakes no kids they get loud especialy in the mourning! You will want to alienate all your friends so you don't get phone calls Matter fo fact rip that damn phone out of the wall unless you use a "call a bottle " type service. O yeah quit yer job so you don't have to 'Be anywhere" You'll have to have a source of income so I recomend starting a bogus charity Like Greenpeace thats how Brian Davies does it (just kidding No law suits please)

Actually campfire, DOUG has a barnful of yaks. I learned this in a painful lesson when I had to apologize in writing to all of them individually after suggesting a yak might be of use in sodomizing Conrad Bladey,#1 Super Pissant. I didn't realize at the time what a mistreatment of yaks that would be and that no self-respecting yak would get within a hundred miles of Conrad for any reason.

For some reason there is not a lot that one feels up to the morning after, but it seems that many people are up to a "bit of a romp." This followed by a nap seems to be a pretty good cure.

I'm guessing that it's not entirely a guy thing as in order for it to happen a partner is needed, and there's a good chance that your partner was with you the night before and may be feeling as badly as you do.

I have heard it said that the stranger you woke up next to can sometimes cure a hangover. Must be the fright factor.

I always stand when I play, unless I have something to lean on. Doesn't seem to have helped my @$$ any, but it works on hangovers.

Don't much go for hangovers these days but I found that eating a good meal and drinking copious amounts of water before going out helped lessen the evil impact. After/ PLenty of water, three aspirin and a couple of apples. A good solid hour of bayonet drill helps too so there must be something to the excercise theory. Kindest reguards and bromos to all, Neil

Angustoras (sure I've spelt it wrong) Bitters and Soda Water and a sleep seem to work for me. Doesn't do too much for the headache but takes care of other unpleasant side effects!

Reminds me of my favourite line in 'Hitch-hiker'.

Q. What's wrong with being drunk?
A. Ask a glass of water!>br>

All the best

Of course if one never sobers up, one never GETS a hangover!

Spaw, the Yaks are back on their feed now, so I suppose you are forgiven.

Campfire, Yaks are hard to come by but they can be had. DougR

The Critter just reminded of a fabulous quote from "The Young Ones":
Vyvyan - "What's good for a hangover?"
Mike - "Drinking heavily the night before."

probably shouldn't say this...but several years ago, I asked my doctor why I was having problems with headache...etc..with only a couple of beers..etc.. (I NEVER overdo drinking...haven't been drunk in 30 years, so it made me mad that I was reacting to smaller amounts of alcohol).....anyway...my doctor wrote me a prescription for a drug that was, at that time not 'over-the-counter'....Pepcid!...he said he knew some guys from Merck, the company that developed it, and that they had noticed that when they went out for the evening, they often took their own product for its usual purpose...and noted that they were NOT getting drunk as much and having fewer side-effects...did a few comparison tests and came to the conclusion that it did help...and that they didn't dare use it in advertising!..."Take our product and guzzle all you want"...nope...didn't sound right!

So...I try to remember to take a Pepcid when I KNOW I'm going to have a couple of drinks, and it seems to help...*shrug*....

Note: this is NOT an endorsement of over-indulgence or a guarantee or even a suggestion...it merely reports my own experience and why I tried it.

No Chicky: it was Vyvyan who said "the best thing for a hangover is drinking heavily the night before"!!

The best remedy is ringing in to work "sick" and sleeping til 3pm.

Sometimes all it takes is one glass of white wine and I feel the next morning as if there is a little guy with very strong legs propped up against the back of my skull trying like the divil to push my eyeballs out of their sockets. This hurts. I think it has to do with sulfides and is why I don't drink white wine much anymore and if I do, I make sure it's pretty good wine.

A few years back when I was being visited somewhat more regularly by hangovers (simply do NOT know why...) my technique was water and three aspirin before bedtime, water every time woke up. Gatorade or orange juice in the a.m., as much as I could get down. Then an ice cold Coke or two. After I'd lain around on the sofa for a couple of hours with a cold wash cloth on my forehead, cursing my stupidity, I would put some clothes on and drag myself down to one of Santa Fe's Norteno restaurants where I'd have a plate of enchiladas o tamales con the most pico, caliente green chile I could find. Talk about sweating it out ...

Hey, WyoWoman! I agree with you about being careful not to wash out too much Potassium, although most of the damage has probably already been done during the "dehydration" phase. I have never tried it, but reliable sources tell me that a liter of Normal Saline run intravenously works wonders for a hangover. Don't try this at home. These are professionals. For the rest of us, Gatorade type drinks, (orally), are probably the next best thing for rehydration and electrolyte balance.

No Callie, I think you're misremebering. Alcohol can do that. You can find the whole script here.

OK?

If I drink particular types of red wine (usually Italian, usually the rougher ones, like valpollystripper) I get a Grade I listed hangover. Fruity ones (like one I found called 'Old Git') give me no trouble at all....

I find alternating drinks helps, try drinking a pint of orange and lemonade for every other round, or having a half instead of a pint....

A big glass of water, before sleeping, a big glass of coke on waking, may be a paracetamol, and keep away from the cat litter tray.

Chicky - Is she misremembering or is she dismembering? Hmmm...

Why is there not more stuff about flatulence on this thread? Spaw? You okay? How about Cleigh?

Raptor - you mentioned "and for god sakes no kids they get loud especialy in the mourning!" Damn straight. My advice is, hire professional mourners instead. They may charge a lot, but they do an absolute bang-up job, weeping and wailing, tearing their hair out, chewing on the rug, chasing the dog around with a butcher knife, and so on. You shouldn't ask your kids to carry a load like that, anyway. What are you mourning about, by the way. Did one of the mice die? Kermit croaked last week, but I haven't told anyone. Oooops!!! Forget I just said that. I didn't know that raptors got hangovers, but then again I never knew one that could hold his liquor, so there you go.

Now, where was I?

Flatulence, you reallly want MORE flatulence on here???

Mind you, I've often found a good fart relieves a lot of the internal pressure, assuming that is, that you have found a safe place to do it, away from small children, horses that fright easy and where there is a clean pair of trolleys if necessary.....

In fact, I've known a good couple of knicker rippers to be so theraputic, the headache has gone almost instantly and so have those annoying little wine flies. Damn near blew the side of the tent out too.... Good job the zip was undone.

Aahhhh, flatulence. Get up, stand up, and play lots of deep rumbly bass notes on your guitar to get things moving. Peristalsis is a miraculous thing!
