Subject: Friends with taste! From: GUEST,Fibula Mattock Date: 06 Sep 00 - 12:23 PM I have to tell the world how great my mates are. I'm leaving the corporate ratrace tomorrow to go off to university once more to start my PhD. My friends called me round to their desks today, told me to close my eyes, and handed me...a guitar! Needless to say I'm practically bawling my eyes out with gratitude. They know I've been saving for one. They couldn't have picked a nicer present, and I couldn't have picked nicer friends. I don't want to leave them all now (I'm moving right out of Norn Ireland and off to SW England - Bristol), but they say I have to go now or they'll get the guitar refunded... Anyway, this is just me telling anyone who'll listen that I'm really going to miss friends like these. |

Did you see my Surplice of Praises offering on groups of animals? I keep waiting for a response. Sorry. Back to the guitar and PhD thread. |

Subject: RE: Friends with taste! From: catspaw49 Date: 06 Sep 00 - 10:15 PM Soph, you have an interesting point. I suppose to have friends of good taste, you must first be a person of good taste. This goes a long way to explaining my lack of friends with good taste. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Friends with taste! From: paddymac Date: 06 Sep 00 - 10:39 PM Good on ye, Fib. Done that thing twice myself, and would probably do it again it I wasn't still recovering from trying to get two kids thru the process. Some people do it for money, but that's probably the least valid reason to pursue a higher degree. At the end of the road, it's mostly about personal satisfaction and the joy of learning. |
Subject: RE: Friends with taste! From: GUEST,Fibula Mattock Date: 07 Sep 00 - 11:43 AM (Post pub report...) No hangover...how did I ever make it through the drinks people kept handing me and emerge with no hangover? Usually I'm being incredibly sick at this stage. We crawled around a few of the finest Belfast drinking dens. I spent the entire night telling anyone who'd listen "They got me a GUITAR!". I've noticed another worrying thing. Had I been given a guitar 9 or 10 years ago (when I was but a mere 14 or 15) I would have had a different reaction, but when one of my mates said "Now's your chance to become a rock star!" I said "Nah, I'm sticking to folk". He threatened to hit me over the head with said instrument until I promised I'd never sing "Kumbaya" (not a difficult promise to make). Thanks for the good wishes everyone. sophocleese - it's a PhD in computer graphics and archaeology, a combination of the careers I've done so far in my short, er, career. |
Subject: RE: Friends with taste! From: Hollowfox Date: 07 Sep 00 - 03:45 PM Congratulations, FM! It sounds like a good combination-major. As a changing-of-venue present, I'll pass on a link-laden website that a friend just passed to me: http://og-man.net (someday I'll print out the instructions to blue up the addresses on the 'Cat). It's humbly titled "Every Celtic Thing on the Net"; some of the stuff is silly (more than somewhat), but the history links have potential. May your move be smooth and your classes be interesting.
