Anyone remember the poem out of the old Childcraft Books, about Skinny Miss Snipkin and fat Mrs. Wobblechin? They had a spat about leaving the window open, so that Mrs. Wobblechin could stay cool; or closed, so that Miss Snipkin could stay warm. At one point she says, "Will you put the window down? You are freezing me to death!"

Early fall has come to the high plains of Wyoming and I am sleeping really well. We have a large swamp cooler in our bedroom window the fan of which has two speeds. I like to leave it on low, at night. With the temperature dipping to the low 40's, it keeps the bedroom in the cool 60's, sometimes just a little colder. Just right for snuggling under the covers and sleeping well.

Not so for Roger! Three a.m. this morning I am awakened by a sudden cessation of noise; no fan, no air moving. Can't sleep without air movement. I finally manage to string together a "What are you doing?!" To which he replies, "I am cold!!"

We are different sleepers. The extra blanket was sandwiched between us. If I had been cold, I would have drag it onto my carcass. He has to wake up and turn things off! I throw the extra blankie on him; get up and come into the computer room, since I am now wide awake.

A trivial thing perhaps, but another ravel-ey string in the woven times of our lives. Tonight, I will mend it with making sure he has lots of covers on his side of the bed.*bg*

Kat,
I too am an "open window" person. This summer I have had three very messy young people living with me. The boys' room smells like a locker room. I refused to put in an air conditioner because it would close off any circulation. Now it's getting chilly at night. They run around closing windows. I run around opening them because I can't stand the smell of gym socks. Wait until the first snow!
In complete understanding,
Mary
Of course you could offer to cuddle up close and keep him warm. Just a thought.

Cats in the bed are the solution. The warm sleeper picks the sleeping cats off himself and puts them on the cold sleeper. (Of course, the cats keep moving back, because the warm sleeper is warmer - but a great plan without some flaw would be hubristic.)

LOL kat!!! I love the windows open, clear into the teens! I roll up in the blankets and stick my nose out for air. The SweetBaboo usually ends up freezing. He went out and got a huge flannel quilt in the hopes he might make it through the night. I curled up, and of course Angus thought it looked like a warm spot to sleep too (BG) so he made a nest behind my legs. We were pretty warm, I dunno about Mike, but last I saw he was headed towards the bedroom with a staple-gun.....

Y'all with that open window stuff.............geeziz............

My first college roommate and I had a running battle over the window. He'd get up at 5 AM to work in Food Service and throw open the window, whiff noisily, and scream, "AH....Jungle Air!!!" The fact that we were in Kentucky didn't seem to bother him. One cold, January, morning, he goes through his routine and leaves. I had been good and drunk the night before, so when I awoke a little later I thought perhaps the wall had been removed. I looked over at the window where snow was accumulating on the sill with the curtains blowing wildly, retrieved my balls from the floor and put them back in place, then closed the window. Later in the day I went out and bought some nails and nailed the damn thing shut.

Here in West Virginia, many of the signs which mark the end of summer have made their appearances. The first chilled morning fogs have been hiding the morning sun for the past few days until well past ten o'clock. The first flocks of geese, wedging their way southward, honked their way over the farm a few days ago. I have discovered lavender asters blooming down by the creek. The thistles are starting to release their infamous silver-silk seeds into the wind. Hickory nuts, as large and as green as limes, are dropping down upon the porch roof and sounding as if someone were stoning the house. Virginia Creeper, a vine which decorates many of the trees here, is abandoning its former green in favor of bright shades of red. Yellow leaves are now mixing into the few chartreuse ones which remain on the Black Walnut trees. Hummingbirds seem to swarm around nearly every flower in the garden. They seem to know that they will need the extra energy in only a few days when they begin their long journey southward. The acrid resins of the milkweed has been marvelously assimilated by the Monarch butterflies which are even now following the blooming of the goldenrod southward toward Mexico.

I note these things and feel both the end and the beginning of two of my favorite times of year. What a show!

Ah, you can tell it's getting to be Fall here...it's only 89 degrees with 100% humidity!

Beautiful, Allan, it just sounds soooo lovely!

Sinsull, odd thing is, he usually has so much body heat, he is like a furnace and if we cuddle too much we wind up drenched from sweat! Then, too, it doesn't wind up being very comfortable after a while and comfort is a big thing for me to get any sleep at all.

Midchuck, my cats are very particular. We humans of theirs are not to move an inch if we want them to remain on the bed. There is one fat little black with gold tips female, who loves her "da" and will curl up by his feet. If he does his usual log imitation then she usualy lasts through the night, but move one foot and she leaves in disgust. I have one who will come cuddle my cheek and wrap his arm across my neck while I read, but as soon as I turnt he light out he is outta there. I am a very restless sleeper.*BG*

The poor dog was trained early on that the bed was supposed to be cat territory so he is very, very polite about waiting for an inviatation and even then he will only stay for a few moments, so....I guess we strike out with critters-for-bed-warmers.

In all fairness to Rog, I checked the newspaper for last night's temp and apparently it was down in the 40's. A little chillier than I thought. In all fairness to me, I did have the electric mattress pad on high last night!

Ah, well, were we really meant to grow up, usually with a bed and room all to ourselves and then share!? LOL!!

I was very fortunate to find a wife who likes it as cold as I do (I mean the ambient temperature -- get your mind out of the gutter, you!).

The problem is that our bedroom is directly above the furnace room. Sigh. But since we both like the window open, it usually works out.

Lots of blankets and a really cold nose -- I can hardly sleep otherwise!

O..O
=o=
