I remember this from a 60s album but can't remember all the lyrics.

I had a sister Sally
She was older than I am
Had so many sweethearts
She had to deny them
But as for sister Sarah
You know she hasn't many
And if you knew her heart
She'd be grateful for any

Come a landsman, a kinsman, a tinker or a tailor
A doctor, a lawyer, a soldier or a sailor
A rich man, a poor man, a fool or a witty
Don't let her die an old maid
But take her out of pity.

What bugs me is that Pene can come up with a two-minute replay and not even work up a sweat. I don't know how he does it.
-Slow Joe, who once held the three-minute record-

Joe,
Does this help?...."Slow and steady wins the race."

Well, no, sinsull, that doesn't help at all - but I take consolation in the belief that I'm far better-looking than Pene is..

See "The Love Sick Maid" on the Bodley Ballds website (in Mudcat's Links), and for versions back to 1636 see "The Old Maid's complaint" in the Scarce Songs 1 file on my website (in Mudcat's Links).

I've now added Martin Parker's original version, "The Wooing Maid", 1636, to the texts in the Scarce Songs 1 file on my website (in Mudcat's Links).

Sinsull - If you had put [out of pity] in the search box, you would have found the version you were looking for yourself. There are actually at least 7 versions in the DT, plus some cousins. If you search for oldmaid* you will find quite a few. We should probably put a DT number on it.

Why not put the Roud number on it? It's Roud# 802. It would be a good idea, but a lot of work, to put Roud numbers on all in DT that have Roud numbers. R802 ?

Susan,
I put "Take her put of pity" in the search and got nothing. The DT hates me. I don't know why but she hates me.
Mary, whining.

Just put it in again and it took me to AllanC's thread and the lyrics. Still whining.

I knew the chorus, but never recalled the verses. I think we had this by the Kingston Trio (Phil Ochs???) when I was a wee one. However, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem do a great version called Old Maid in the Garret (so come landsman or come tinsman, come tinker or come tailor, come fiddler, come dancer, come ploughboy or come sailor, come rich man, come poor man, come fool or come witty, come any man at all that will marry me for pity!) - in which there is a line about If I can't get a man, then I'll have to get a parrot, which I always sing as I'll have to get a carrot - makes more sense to me, it isn't the one-sided conversation I miss!
