Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: GUEST,harpandsong Date: 20 Oct 00 - 11:30 PM After much debate, we named our band after a jig in O'Neills: "Rum & Onions". We play it with another one called "Buttermilk and Praties" and intro it as "The Sailor's Breakfast Set". There are lots of great tune names. Some we didn't use: Upstairs in a Tent Wallop the Potlid Plaid Cousins Banshee's Cry As a matter of interest, I thought I was the only perosn in the world who liked "Clishmaclaver". It's what I named my art studio. Cheers, CE

Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: GUEST,John Leeder Date: 20 Oct 00 - 12:41 PM The "neat sound" is totally out of keeping with the entirely banal reasons. I made some bannock the other day, an extra large batch to use up the flour. There was one piece left; I told my son he could have it for breakfast next day. He didn't. It sat in the fridge tempting me. It was in my mind when I read the posts. I warned you... From such inconsequentialities do neat sounds arise. |
Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: GUEST,Lisa Date: 20 Oct 00 - 12:05 PM I probably shouldn't even ask but I would be curious to know the "history" of The Last Bannock, John. It has a neat sound to it. Lisa |

Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: GUEST,Lisa Date: 19 Oct 00 - 03:28 PM Well, we are thoroughly embarrassed!!! Luckily, the deadline for getting a name in was not as early as we first thought, so we were able to change the name. Thanks for bringing the other "Crann Tara's" to our attention, Aine. I don't know how they got missed in our search. Anyway, thanks for all the great ideas. You might be right, Rob...a rename is probably a bad idea. Hopefully we'll see some of you in Arizona. Lisa |

Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: Max Tone Date: 17 Oct 00 - 08:04 PM It's now Wednesday, here in Scotland, so if you ain't decided yet, you've obviously blown your Monday name launch. Best advice is to stick to the name you had. Renames historically sink into obscurity. Persistence with the old one wins through in the end!.........Rob |

Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: JTT Date: 17 Oct 00 - 06:58 PM Whoops - my spelling in Irish is as bad as my spelling in English is good. And "an teocht is airde" - well, it's just what they say on the weather. And the difference between nios airde and is airde is so little here... |
Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: Áine Date: 17 Oct 00 - 12:42 PM Actually, JTT, that should be Luan (nominative singular) not Luain (genitive singular). You'd use the genitive singular after the word Dé, as in the phrase Dé Luain (literally, Day of Monday). And níos airde means 'higher'. Is airde means 'highest'. But I think either one of your suggestions is a great name for a band! -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: JTT Date: 17 Oct 00 - 11:32 AM Luain Ar Bith (Any Monday in Irish; not sure what the Gaedhlig is) or An Teocht Nios Airde (the highest temperature, but doesn't it sound mysterious and Celticky?) |

Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: Áine Date: 16 Oct 00 - 07:37 PM I hate to break this to you, Lisa; but, in just a preliminary search on the Net, I found two bands that have the name "Crann Tara". One is a bagpipe band in New England, The Crann Tara Bagpipe Band, Inc., and the other is a band that's been playing/recording for five years or so called Crann Tara (Bill McArthur & Stuart Duncan make up the duo that is known as Crann Tara. They have been entertaining audiences in Scotland and throughout Europe for the past five years.) You might just want to rename your group ASAP after these latest performances. And don't forget to do a search for the name you pick. -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: GUEST,Esa Date: 16 Oct 00 - 06:36 PM I know too late. I would have offered Elston Gunn as a good name. It's the name Robert Zimmerman went by before deciding on Bob Dylan.... |
Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: GUEST,Lisa Date: 16 Oct 00 - 05:04 PM Hey guys!! Sorry for not getting back with you sooner...we've been on the road. We did decide on a band name (and by Monday, too) so we got it in to the publicist in time. The actual first performance under the new name isn't until November 4th, but I'll let you know how it goes. Okay, the name we decided on was "Crann Tara", despite the controversy! We liked the signal fire aspect so we decided to take the risk. As far as the guest list goes, the BIG ONE on November 4th is at the Mesa Amphitheatre in Mesa, Arizona and, of course, you're all invited!! It will be a 3 1/2 to 4 hour concert with four bands. Leading off...Jimmy Kears (forgive me if I've got his last name wrong) of "Men of Worth" (he's the Irish half), then "The Wicked Tinkers", next a 4 member Irish group from California who's name, I believe, is "Craigiemore", and then "Crann Tara". No pressure there...we just have to close the whole thing! If any of you make it, come and introduce yourself. Again, thanks for all the suggestions!! Lisa

Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: Naemanson Date: 07 Oct 00 - 10:46 PM I once got a card announcing "Irish music Any Monday". I only glanced at it and realized I was busy the coming Monday. I made plans to go the following Monday. Turns out the NAME of the band was Any Monday and I missed them by a week. Lesson: Be careful naming the band because you know the audience will only glance at your literature at first. |

Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: Áine Date: 07 Oct 00 - 05:12 PM Dear Lisa, In Irish, crann tarra could be translated to mean a tar pole; and besides, there's already an excellent Irish band by the name of Crann. If you're going to be playing to mostly English-speaking audiences, I'd strongly suggest that you give your band a name in English, so your audience will be able to easily remember and pronounce it. Now that I think about it, 'By Monday' is way too close to 'Till Tuesday', so scrap that one. Stick to something with three syllables, in English, and I think you'll be happy. -- Áine |

Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: GUEST,Lisa Date: 07 Oct 00 - 04:49 PM Okay, some of you are definitely on the right track! Clishmacclaver might be a bit much but I applaud your creativity!! Seriously though, Avalon and The Hollow Hills were in the perfect vein of what we are looking for. Actually, the name at the top of our list is "Crann Tara"...a Gaelic name for the crossed pieces of wood that were lit and carried to the hill tops as signal fires. Our only concern is if the "burning crosses" brings a bad picture to mind? Any ideas? Lisa |
Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: Áine Date: 07 Oct 00 - 04:04 PM I think 'By Monday' would be perfect -- and just think, if you're up for it, you could write an original tune with that name for your band! -- Áine |
