Since a few good folks got into the "Bluegrass" quiz, and I've STILL no interest in the NFL, here's a few more. But I ain't goin' easy on ya...this is obscure stuff!

Well, Cowpie (click) haslyrics for a Bobby Bare recording of 500 Miles, which was written by Mudcatter Hedy West.
I think the biggest hit of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" must be Peter, Paul and Mary. I saw some gold records on Noel Paul Stookey's wall (a friend of mine worked for him), but don't know if "Flowers" was one of them.

#3 Kingston Trio version made it to #21 on the Billboard hit parade and was also listed on the Billboard easy listening charts. I don't know how high up the charts PP&M version went.

Ian Tyson - spent four years at Vancouver School for Arts studying painting. He worked briefly as a commercial artist, had a few illustrations published and designed the logo for Resdan dandruff shampoo. He's also been and is a rancher.

I'd think Pete Seeger, 'cause it's his voice I hear singing it, but then I steered clear of the more pop singers/groups back then, so it coulda been PP&M.

Not Cohen, as mentioned above, unless you include trad. singers. The photog in question took shots that were on the cover of all the mags at the time, and I think it was a woman, but I can't remember the name.

#15 correctly identified as Flatt and Scruggs. Columbia and Louise Scruggs forcefed Dylan songs to Lester, in bid to be a "folk act" and Lester growled his way thru clunkers like "Mama You Been on My Mind." Yucch! #3 might just be Trini Lopez. Other questions have already been answered or are simply too obscure for me.

#11 was written by Trad. It's an older song (from perhaps the 1890's) and has gone under various titles, including 900 miles, 1000 miles, 200 miles, etc. etc. See "Long Steel Rail" by Norm Cohen.

Is "Gern" in suggesting Trini Lopez for #3 getting muddled up with "If I had a hammer" the old Weaver's song that was later recorded by PP&M and later very successfully by Trini Lopez.
#11 ... The first I remember this one was by The Kingston Trio in the 50's .. I don't remember anyone else doing it as a single. It was on LP by PP&M and no doubt others too.

T'is as Mudcatter Gern said, but when you hear Lester singing "Everybody must get stoned" and Buffy's "Universal Soldier", you can see where selling your soul for "filthy lucre" can get you. Lester took the high road on this for the rest of his life, but according to the book on him "The Good Things Outweigh The Bad", Louise Scruggs got their price up from 200 bucks a night to 2000(!) almost instantly! Lester should have put his foot down BEFORE the recordings. He also said that Earl's kids were "long haired dope smokers". Those last two Flatt and Scruggs albums may be the worst records ever produced in my opinion.

BTW, I kinda like some of the Dylan stuff that Flatt & Scruggs recorded. Although I agree it is very wierd to hear Lester sing "everybody must get stoned."

From what I understand, their breakup wasn't just over the choice of material. I've been told that the biggest reason was that Earl was against the Vietnam War while Earl was opposed.

Maybe we need Hedy herself to judge between us on this question, Rick, but Norm Cohen says, in Long Steel Rail, second edition, page 508,

Early in the 1960s another version of the song, titled "500 Miles," enjoyed great popularity. The source of this variant was Hedy West, a young folksinger from Catersville, Georgia, whose repertoire drew heavily on the musical traditions of her own west Georgia family. She learned "500 Miles" from her grandmother, who had probably learned it around the turn of the century. Hedy changed the song a bit, ending up with a slow and moody love song, in sharp contrast to Guthrie's wild renditions with fiddle, harmonica, and mandolin.
