As I travel thru this pilgrim land
Chorus
Let me travel in the light divine
Chorus
When I wander thru the valley dim
Chorus Note: there is a LOT more going on in the chorus than I have given. I think it is too complicated for me to type and make it look right. I will put up a sound file and the printed music if anyone is interested.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Precious Jesus hold my hand From: Ebbie Date: 25 Oct 00 - 03:49 PM Dale, it's been a long time since I heard that song! Love the parts and harmonies in it. Man, when I lived in Virginia, I learned a lot of GREAT songs! Once a month we went to Harrisonburg for an all-night gospel sing. Have never come close to anything like that again. Ebbue |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Precious Jesus hold my hand From: Burke Date: 25 Oct 00 - 05:35 PM All night gospel sing??? Are these a thing of the past or do they still happen. Any idea of how to find out the when's & where's? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Precious Jesus hold my hand From: Dale Rose Date: 25 Oct 00 - 05:42 PM Jesus, Hold My Hand Well, there it is, but it took a lot longer than anticipated, thanks to Tripod's famous "Temporary Interruptions" and other ways of sending you back to the beginning. A note about file size ~~ they are BIG, but I figure that many will want to download the music files for printing, or even saving. Poor originals make even poorer copies. So, get a soda, coffee, whatever while the page loads, and enjoy. The Real Audio version I chose is by Cynthia Clawson. I also have a much more brush arbor type version by The Chuck Wagon Gang, but that is only on tape, and at the moment, I am not sure where I would find it.
If you like this one, try some of the other links I have at the top of the page. (Not EVERYTHING is done at the site ~~ but even the page entitled Test! Test! has some interesting pictures on it.) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Precious Jesus hold my hand From: jeepman (inactive) Date: 25 Oct 00 - 10:13 PM Dale, I thank you. The music download is great. Cynthia Lawson sounds a lot like Emmy Lou. If you find the Chuck Wagon Gang's version I sure would love to hear it. They have always been among my favorites. Please email me if this happens. Jeepman cj2a1947@aol.com ' |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Precious Jesus hold my hand From: rangeroger Date: 25 Oct 00 - 10:21 PM Just ran across a Chuck Wagon Gang LP in the local St Vincent DePaul. Didn't take a close look at it.Will do so tommorrow. rr |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Precious Jesus hold my hand From: Dale Rose Date: 25 Oct 00 - 11:51 PM It was easier to find than I thought it would be. It was right where I looked the very first time. Now that is unusual!
The Chuck Wagon Gang is sort of like George Washington's axe, with all new parts added over the years. The original group of Rose, Anna, Jim, and Dad Carter (no relation to you know who) started in the 30s singing Cowboy music, hence the name. The gospel segments of their radio shows were so popular that they eventually turned to gospel music exclusively. The original quartet made their final recordings in 1953. After that, changes were periodically made until none of the original members were left.
I find the later versions of the Chuck Wagon Gang to have a good bit less "fire", but then, anyone who prefers their music has a right to that opinion. Albums by either group would be worth having, in my opinion.
The Real Audio version I have added to the bottom of the page is not perfect, but listenable. It comes from an album that I purchased in 1960 (the back cover says so) but I think the recordings were from some years earlier.
I am not real pleased with my transcription of the chorus. I'll ask Joe to fix it when he gets back home from globetrotting. He is a whole lot better than I am at such. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Precious Jesus hold my hand From: rangeroger Date: 26 Oct 00 - 10:50 PM I went back to St Vinnie's today and picked up "He Walks With Me" by the Chuck Wagon Gang for 35 cents.1963 copyright date. All the songs were written by Roy Carter ( Dad's son ). Other members are Anna and Rose Carter,Howard Welborn and Ronald Crittenden.Guitar accompanist is William Gorden,Anna's husband. haven't listened to it yet but am looking forward to it. rr |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Precious Jesus hold my hand From: GUEST,Mary Date: 11 Apr 03 - 10:09 AM Harrisonberg Virginia.... Does anyone know if there are still all nite gospel sings there? Wouldn't that be fun to go to? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Precious Jesus hold my hand From: GUEST,Dale Date: 11 Apr 03 - 10:24 PM If there are, they are no where as big as they used to be. There are frequent gospel singings in this area, but I think they are over by bedtime! By the way, I have not updated my pages in a LONG time, but clicking on the link I gave on 25 Oct 00 - 05:42 PM will still get you the sheet music and the TWO sound files by Cynthia Clawson and The Chuckwagon Gang. Both worth your time to download. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jesus, Hold My Hand (Albert E Brumley) From: Ebbie Date: 05 Apr 04 - 02:19 AM When I used to go to Harrisonburg's all-night gospel sings was a LONG time ago- it was in the early 50s. On my recent visit to Virginia I asked a friend who lives in Harrisonburg if they still put them on- he said No. OTOH, he's not a musician and was not involved so I can't be sure. Dale, I would love to know if a reasonable facsimile still exists. Performers came from all over the south at that time- I remember Lousiana and Alabama specifically- and they would play as long as the crowd stayed. I remember one time they played until 5 a.m. but 2:00 was more common. Thinking back, I imagine it was in an open mike format- I believe they did not get paid. But many of them had records and songbooks for sale, along with promotional material. I imagine that promoters and venue reps were in attendance. I wish I could remember more of the artists' names. I do remember "The Friendly Four" and "The Lighthouse Trio". At that time, we looked askance at anything larger than a quartet or anything smaller than a duet- we had a narrow view, I must say. Five was a chorus, for pete's sake, and who wanted to listen to a lone voice? Seriously, that is where I learned to love harmonies. It was great fun. |
