Subject: Lyr Add: OLD TIME CHRISTIAN (from Norman Blake)
From: Giac
Date: 25 Oct 02 - 09:35 PM

I couldn't find this in the DT, but maybe I looked in the wrong place.

OLD TIME CHRISTIAN
(Norman and Nancy Blake version)

I'd rather be an old time Christian
Than anything I know.
There's nothing like an old time Christian
With a Christian love to show.
I'm walking down the grand old highway
And I'm telling everyone that I know
That I'd rather be an old time Christian
Than anything I know.

In this world I've tried most everything
I'm happy now to say
There's nothing like religion
In the good old fashioned way
I'm walking in the old time way
And I want the world to know
That I'd rather be an old time Christian, Lord
Than anything I know.

chorus

There are many things I'd like to be
As my journey I pursue
I would long to be a leader
As a mortal man would do
I'd like to be a millionaire
With a million to bestow
That I'd rather be an old time Christian, Lord
Than anything I know.

chorus

All the world is bright since I got right
I sing and pray and shout
All my burdens have been lifted
Since the savior brought me out
I will sing his praises far and near
As I travel here below
But I'd rather be an old time Christian, Lord
Than anything I know.

The original title is I'D RATHER BE AN OLD TIME CHRISTIAN (THAN ANYTHING) (Words and Music by Albert E. Brumley, ©1962). The score & lyrics are in Gospel's Greatest (Fake Book) (Word Music/Hal Leonard, p. 112) and Country Gospel USA (Hal Leonard, pp. 80-81).

It's a bit older than the 1962 copyright mentioned above. I have it in a 1939 Stamps-Baxter hymnal, "Favorite Songs and Hymns". There it's credited to Albert E. Brumley, Copyright, 1934, by The Hartford Music Co., in "Song-Path to Glory." The full title to the song is "I'd Rather be and Old-Time Christian (Than Anything I Know)"

Thanks, Masato, and Nathan in Texas -- the origin was bugging me, too. Kept thinking I'd heard it when I was a kid, but couldn't remember where. Stamps-Baxter explains it.

Here's the Brumley version, from a Brumley Publish songbook called the Best of Albert E. Brumley. Not much different from the Blake version that Giac posted.
-Joe Offer-

I'D RATHER BE AN OLD TIME CHRISTIAN
(Than Anything I Know)

(Albert E. Brumley, 1934)

In this world I've tried most everything
And I'm happy now to say
There is nothing like religion
In the good old-fashioned way
I am walking in the old-time way
And I want the world to know
That I'd rather be an old-time Christian (Lord)
Than anything I know.

chorus
I'd rather be an old-time Christian (Lord)
Than anything I know.
There's nothing like an old-time Christian
With a Christian love to show.
I'm walking in the grand old highway
And I'm telling everywhere I go
That I'd rather be an old-time Christian (Lord)
Than anything I know.

There are many things I'd like to be
As my journey I pursue
I have longed to be a leader
Like a mortal man would do
I would like to be a millionaire
With a million to bestow
But I'd rather be an old-time Christian (Lord)
Than anything I know.

chorus

All the world is bright since I got right
Now I sing and pray and shout
All my burdens have been lifted
Since the Savior brought me out
I will tell the world both far and near
As I travel here below
That I'd rather be an old time Christian (Lord)
Than anything I know.

chorus
