Subject: Cho cho losa/sho sho losa From: Steve Parkes Date: 07 Nov 00 - 08:40 AM The Ian Campbell group recorded this in the 60s (they got it phonetically from a Zulu dance troupe they toured with at the time), and it's been perforemd recently in the UK by a band whose name I'm ashamed to say I can't quite remember. Anyone know the words? Steve |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cho cho losa/sho sho losa From: KingBrilliant Date: 07 Nov 00 - 09:44 AM Oh Wow! This is the song that Black Umfolozi taught at their workshop at Towersey a few years ago. The Arts Centre tent was heaving with people. They taught us the song - which was fine. Then they taught us the dance - which was also manageable. But beggared if I could put the two together at the same time. Brings back happy memories. I remember it having something to do with the train, & we had to sing it like a train speeding up & slowing down or something. Kris |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cho cho losa/sho sho losa From: GUEST,Lynn T Date: 07 Nov 00 - 11:35 AM This song was in a popular movie a few years back set in Africa -- was it Out of Africa? The Gods Must Be Crazy? Can't quite recall...and also recorded by a DC-based group called Clam Chowder in a very nice five-part harmony version. Hope this helps... Lynn |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cho cho losa/sho sho losa From: Anglo Date: 07 Nov 00 - 05:49 PM Is this the same song Pete Seeger recorded on his We Shall Overcome tour back in 63? He spelled it "Tshotsholosa" and you might try a search for that. |
Subject: Lyr Req: Cho Cho Losa From: Desred Date: 03 Oct 04 - 05:09 AM Can anybody help to track down the lyrics from the Ian Campbell Folk Group version of Cho Cho Losa? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cho Cho Losa From: greg stephens Date: 03 Oct 04 - 06:43 AM Try the spelling Shosholoza in the Digatrad box and you will find lyrics for this. Not necessarily as used by Ian Campbell, but there are definitely a couple of sets of words there. A great song! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cho Cho Losa From: greg stephens Date: 03 Oct 04 - 06:45 AM In case you are unfamiliar with the Mudcat layout, the box actually says "Lyrics and knowledge search" at the top left of the main forum page....not Digitrad, I was misremembering |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cho Cho Losa From: Steve Parkes Date: 20 Oct 04 - 07:35 AM I beat you to it, Desred! Trouble with the song is I've never been able to match the words to the tune. The Campbells learned it parrot-fashion, so their rendering is a little too confusing to be a good guide. I was lucky enough to meet three South African women a few months back, who had the words and tune with them, and sang it for us, harmonies and all -- wonderful stuff! -- but even with the book, I couldn't follow it very well. WhatI really need is two or three other singers ... Steve |
