Subject: Lyr Add: I LIVE NOT WHERE I LOVE From: Alisdair Date: 21 Nov 96 - 02:32 PM I Live Not Where I Love traditional Oh come all ye maids who live at a distance Many's a mile from off your swain Come and assist me at this very moment For to pass away some time Singing sweetly and completely Songs of pleasure and of love For me heart is him altogether Though I live not where I love When I sleep I dream about you When I wake I take no rest Every moment thinking of you My heart e'er fixed to your breast But although far distance may be of assistance If from my mind your love remove For me heart is with him altogether Though I live not where I love All the world shall be of one religion All living things shall cease to die If ever I should prove false to my jewel Or any way his love deny Oh the world shall change and be most strange If from my mind your love remove For me heart is with him altogether Though I live not where I love So farewell lads and farewell lassies Now I think I've made my choice I will away to yonder mountain where I think I hear his voice And if he hollows I will follow 'round the world Though it is so wide For young Thomas he did promise I should be his lawful bride Enjoy ! Subject: RE: I Live Not Where I Love From: GUEST Date: 02 Aug 03 - 08:35 PM Thanks I 'm singing this song at Jeanne's Wedding |
Subject: RE: I Live Not Where I Love From: GUEST Date: 02 Aug 03 - 10:40 PM See ZN3048 in the broadside ballad index at www.erols.com/olsonw for a short history from the late 16th century. My recollection is that Jean Redpath's version wasn't traditional. |
Subject: RE: I Live Not Where I Love From: GUEST Date: 02 Aug 03 - 11:58 PM Texts of the original by Robert Southwell, Peter Lowberry's broadside version of 1638, and a traditional version of the song are in the Scarce Songs 2 file at www.erols.com/olsonw |
Subject: RE: I Live Not Where I Love From: DMcG Date: 03 Aug 03 - 04:52 AM A little late, perhaps, but the notation can be found here by clicking on the PDF link. |

Subject: RE: I Live Not Where I Love From: izzy Date: 03 Aug 03 - 09:51 AM There's a lovely version of this on a Jo Freya album, I think it's called Traditional Songs of England. I have it in a Musical Heritage Society reissue. It's one of my favourite songs too. Cheers, Isabel |
Subject: RE: I Live Not Where I Love From: GUEST,Guest Date: 03 Aug 03 - 12:37 PM The copy given by Frank Purslow from Hammond's MS in the Scarce Songs 2 file at www.erols.com/olsonw is the only traditional version listed in Steve Roud's folk song index! |
Subject: RE: I Live Not Where I Love From: Peg Date: 03 Aug 03 - 02:55 PM isn't there a version by Mary Black? The lyrics are somewhat different...I recall one line "singing sweetly and completely" and another "let our hearts beat both together" and "now at last I've made my choice." Anyone have these lyrics or know which album it's from? thanks, peg |
Subject: RE: I Live Not Where I Love From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 03 Aug 03 - 03:16 PM The text at the beginning of this thread is the one that the Hammond brothers got from Robert Barratt, Piddletown, Dorset, in 1905. It was printed in Frank Purslow, Marrowbones (EFDS Publications 1965). That would be Mary Black's ultimate source, though she usually learned her songs from other revival performers in those days (rather than from traditional sources), and a few words may have got changed. I don't think I've heard Jo Freya's arrangement, but perhaps she names a source on the insert. Another traditional set (3 verses only) was got by W. Percy Merrick from Henry Hills at Shepperton around 1900. |
Subject: RE: I Live Not Where I Love From: IvanB Date: 03 Aug 03 - 05:02 PM Mary Black did the vocal on it on De Danann's album 'Song for Ireland,' Sugar Hill album SH-1130. I suspect she's done other recordings of it as well, but this is the one that immediately came to my mind. And, Peg, you're right about at least the first lyric snippet you've given. I don't remember the others but it's been a while since I've given it a listen. One more reason to get on with my project of converting my vinyl collection to MP3's. |
Subject: RE: I Live Not Where I Love From: Peg Date: 03 Aug 03 - 07:50 PM thanks Ivan; I must get that one! It's a very nice version... peg |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: I Live Not Where I Love From: The Borchester Echo Date: 10 Aug 03 - 07:17 AM I'm reminded that the anniversary of Jon Rennard's death in a car crash has just passed. It is, I think, an amazing 32 years since this fine singer included I Live Not Where I Love on his first and only album, Brimbledon Fair. I still have this on tape and it has always been my favourite version. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: I Live Not Where I Love From: Scrump Date: 07 Dec 06 - 10:05 AM I don't think anyone's mentioned it, but Linda Thompson's version is pretty good too. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: I Live Not Where I Love From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 07 Dec 06 - 12:32 PM Maddy Prior, accompanied by Tim Hart, recorded this song on a LP called 'Summer Solstice'. This was most recently re-issued on a CD called 'Heydays': Tim Hart & Maddy Prior, the Solo Recordings 1968-76, 2003, Castle Music CMDDD809 (This CD also includes 'Folk Songs of Old Englande Vols. 1 & 2). I recall that, when I was a student, a friend of mine had the original LP - and played it so often that I almost think of it as the sound track to that stage of my life! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: I Live Not Where I Love From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 07 Dec 06 - 12:34 PM "All the world shall be of one religion All living things shall cease to die If ever I should prove false to my jewel Or any way his love deny" Or maybe the third line above should be "Before I should prove false to my jewel"? Otherwise I would ask the singer to prove false as soon as possible, so that we can all live forever. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: I Live Not Where I Love From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 07 Dec 06 - 01:14 PM It's amazing it took somebody so long to mention the Maddy Prior version; surely, that version was very well known at the time. Btw, did Maddy ever record it with Steeleye? If not, why not! It's such a great song. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: I Live Not Where I Love From: GUEST,MGJohn Date: 07 Dec 06 - 04:43 PM I am sure I have heard a recording of her singing this but can not find it on ony of my Steeleye Span LP's or Cd's. I would appreciate info. on where it may be located. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: I Live Not Where I Love From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 08 Dec 06 - 09:16 AM One more time, 'Guest,MGJohn': Maddy Prior, accompanied by Tim Hart, recorded this song on a LP called 'Summer Solstice'. If you can manage to scroll up 2 or 3 posts you might even be able to spot where you might find this recording on CD. I don't know about 'Steeleye Span' - I haven't got any of their records (I would rather have several rounds of root-canal work at the dentists!). |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: I Live Not Where I Love From: Scrump Date: 08 Dec 06 - 01:18 PM AFAIK it wasn't recorded by Steeleye Span, as opposed to Tim Hart & Maddy Prior (pre-Steeleye). But there have been compilations issued of early Steeleye material that included tracks from TH & MP's albums that preceded the group's formation (including Summer Solstice), so maybe if anyone thinks they heard a Steeleye recording, that could be the reason. |
