Subject: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: KingBrilliant Date: 28 Nov 00 - 12:15 PM Hiya Noreen asked me to post & let you know how it went... Bedworth Fest was last weekend (Nov 25), near Coventry. It was great fun, so I'd recommend it to everyone for next year. Plenty of concerts etc, but the best thing for me was that there were plenty of singarounds of various flavours. Sat night in the pub was great fun (except for the slightly over-slaked blokie who kept talking to us very intensely but completely incomprehensibly - so that we missed out on some of what we were trying to listen to). There were some great singers & players, and also some lovely people to meet. Plenty of marvellous old trad type songs with big harmonizable choruses. We'll definitely be going next year. Didn't get to meet any mudcatters though, mainly because I didn't have the nerve to just ask if anyone was.... Did the Sidmouth lot make it? Overall it was a great atmosphere, no hassles, and bags of enthusiasm and spontaneous performancing all over the place. Loved it. Now I'm busy trying to remember song snippets so I can look them up in the d'base.... Kris |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Noreen Date: 28 Nov 00 - 12:35 PM Sounds wonderful, Kris- but no Richard Thompson songs then?? :0) |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Snuffy Date: 28 Nov 00 - 05:10 PM Every time we went in the pub it seemd to be either 17 melodeons or guitarists playing Oasis. But there was a great singaround Saturday night in the Arts Centre coffee bar with a few of the Sidmouth crowd there and (briefly) Shellback Chorus. Pity that the real ale (Adnams and Black Sheep remained) ran out. But the session was so good, we stayed and drank cans of Caffreys!! Wassail! V |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: KingBrilliant Date: 29 Nov 00 - 05:21 AM I didn't see any melodeons. Didn't hear any Oasis either. What time was that then? The Sat evening in the pub was fantastic, with loads of great singing. Richard Thompson Noreen? That's that geezer who's name I can never remember! - Hammerite & I did Poor Ditching Boy at the (very sparse) early afternoon singaroundy thing in the coffee bar. Hamm was delighted because it went round the group so quick & you know how she 'bursts' to perform! I think it probably got going a bit more middle-to-late afternoon, but by then we had gone to sample the Sat afternoon folk club bit (which was a different atmosphere, but really great also). Furry drum got a damned good beating - but Hamm didn't try out her lovely uke banjo yet (it came with us, but was too shy...). Kris |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Gillie Date: 28 Nov 01 - 10:03 AM Magician and I enjoyed the weekend - we wore our mudcat badges! Thanks to Geordie Brown, Noreen and Snuffy who introduced themselves. Nice atmosphere and good to have everything under one roof. Doesn't Snuffy live up to his name!! |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: alanww Date: 28 Nov 01 - 12:00 PM See Bedworth FF 23/25 Nov 2001 for more post-festival analysis. Green grows the laurel, soft falls the dew ... |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: John Routledge Date: 28 Nov 01 - 01:39 PM Great for singing and if the singing downstairs in the White Swan gets too much on Sunday afternoon there is a singaround in the upstairs room with great accoustics and almost total silence - except from downstairs when the door opens!! The sound of a single voice contrasted wonderfully with the singing of the Shellback Chorus and assorted massed choir. There were some great songs beautifully sung and it was lovely to hear new singers with differing styles and material. If you sing this Festival is RECOMMENDED. Geordie.

Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: John Routledge Date: 28 Nov 01 - 02:29 PM Sorry - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Geordie |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Herga Kitty Date: 28 Nov 01 - 05:51 PM Sorry to the Shellbacks and other catters - apart from a short burst in the Arts Centre coffee bar I only got to the sessions I was booked to perform in, on account of tight programming. But I enjoyed my spell in the club session at the White Swan. And - for any Mudcat Middle Bar Singers - Saturday was the first time Steve Thomason had heard anyone sing any of his songs, and I sang two of them. Gervase and Cllr - Johnny Collins now wants Tracks in the Snow (no surprise there then). Kitty |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Liz the Squeak Date: 28 Nov 01 - 08:10 PM King - where were you all day Saturday? There were at least 7 catters there, being Snuffy, Geordie, Noreen, Manitas, Cllr, Herga Kitty and me!! It is a great festival, and well worth a visit. The craft fair is full of stuff actually made locally by hand, rather than shipped over wholesale from Tibet or Delhi and they do good cheap food. And the Shellbacks got better and better as the weekend went on! LTS

Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: John Routledge Date: 28 Nov 01 - 08:16 PM LIZ - Pleased that the improvement was noticed :0) Cheers Geordie |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: alanww Date: 29 Nov 01 - 05:30 AM Liz is right Kris, where were you hiding? I was wearing my Mudcatter badge too! (Remember our long chat at Towersey?) Glad you enjoyed yourself but a pity we missed each other. It certainly was a great singers' festival. As I rose up at break of day ... |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Noreen Date: 29 Nov 01 - 07:23 AM err (clears throat)... this is last year's thread recycled... Kris was at Bed'th last year(2000). Kitty, it was lovely that you could lead the Shellbacks, even though only for the one song- but what a song! *grin* Would have been good to do more singing with you. Extended list of 'Catters:
Abuwood (sorry those I've missed)

Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: John Routledge Date: 29 Nov 01 - 08:48 AM Thanks for the definitive list Noreen. Quite a turnout for end of November. Apologies to Mr Red. Even after seeing you and hearing you on Sunday afternoon I still did not connect you with Mudcat. Impossible one would think.!! Almost back to reality after a great weekend. Cheers Geordie.

Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: alanww Date: 29 Nov 01 - 10:16 AM But I didn't see Kris at Bedworth last year either! In a cavern by a canyon ... |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Guessed Date: 29 Nov 01 - 11:14 AM Melodeon? - White Swan - session room. only 1 if I remember but who's counting they had a banjo and two bodhrans, several fiddles and spoons. |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Abuwood Date: 29 Nov 01 - 12:28 PM Thank you for including me in the Catters list I am sorry I missed all the other catters there, but then as the shy member of the Shellbacks is it surprising Liz the squeak did not notice me.....? I think Bedworth was pretty awful, though it was great to see shell mates, I didn't see any acts for Shell do's and the only pub was always heaving |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Liz the Squeak Date: 29 Nov 01 - 04:15 PM But did you notice Liz the Squeak!! I wouldn't know you if I stepped on you - if I did, I'm sorry!!! I have a terrible memory for putting names to faces so please, next time, make yourself known to me!! LTS |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Herga Kitty Date: 29 Nov 01 - 05:11 PM Noreen (and any other Shellbacks who might be interested) Here are the words for "Sing 'em loud" aka "Shanty session plan B", which arrived just before noon, and the start of Jim Mageean's shanty session, in the Endeavour on 22 August at Whitby Folk Week. It was just after Theresa Tooley won the shanty competition at Saltburn. Plan A was for all the women singers (except Theresa) to sit near where Jim was expected to start the singing, so our repertoire of shanties wouldn't have been exhausted by the time the singing reached them. Plan B was the result of someone suggesting that by day 4 of his maritime singarounds Jim might have decided to send the singing round in the other direction... of course, Theresa can't actually sing this! I'm feeling sad and so forlorn Sing 'em loud Can't help the gender I was born Sing 'em loud We weedy women high and shrill Sing 'em loud Can't compete with Jim or Bill Sing 'em loud While they are belting out each word Sing 'em loud We women struggle to be heard Sing 'em loud But there is one who breaks the rule she Sings 'em loud Her name it is Theresa Tooley, she Sings 'em loud TUNE: Bring 'em down

Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: nutty Date: 29 Nov 01 - 05:39 PM It was Jim who called Theresa "the sheila in the Keelers" |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Noreen Date: 29 Nov 01 - 06:05 PM (Said Theresa Tooley being Mudcatter Treaties.) This song of Kitty's was greeted with roars of appreciation in the coffee bar @ Bed'th, from everyone who knows Theresa... and that is everyone! |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Noreen Date: 29 Nov 01 - 06:58 PM The *cute* Ms Tooley, as she was referred to by an onlooker at the bandstand in Whitby! |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Liz the Squeak Date: 30 Nov 01 - 01:42 AM Ah, the Great Theresa Tooley - I abased myself before her having finally put a name to a face after a year!! She coined a lovely phrase that I unashamedly nicked - when describing a less than perfect performance, from a group billed as the 'wall of sound' came up with 'trellis of sound'. I'm waiting for my own 'bit of wire netting on a post' sound to come back after a cough and I shall be out there with you people! LTS |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Abuwood Date: 30 Nov 01 - 12:31 PM Dear Liz, We had a conversation!! Go to the Mud events pictures and I am in the Middle with the sunglasses! Like Noreen says at Whitby Theresa was dubbed the cute one, AliO the quiet one and I am the shy one! That's why you didn't notice me:-) |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Mr Red Date: 30 Nov 01 - 04:30 PM Well only one catter (& we wus both wearin badges) pointed out our common interest. Should I do something to be more recognisable - wear a bigger hat? or is it the brand of aftershave? Well I enjoyed it - heaving AND hauling pub or no. |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: treaties1 Date: 30 Nov 01 - 07:44 PM Well what can I say, overcome with shyness as I am, it really is cute to have a song written about you whilst still in the first(or second or third) flush of youth. Bedworth was great because the company was brill, so heres to the next time we all meet again, love and hugs to all. |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Liz the Squeak Date: 30 Nov 01 - 08:13 PM Hang on, are you trying to say that I conversed with Abuwood and can't place her? And that treaties1 is Theresa Tooley?? Ouch, my brain hurts now!! LTS |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Snuffy Date: 01 Dec 01 - 07:15 AM Yes Liz, Abuwood is that Alison from the Shellbacks who gave Manitas details of where to get the t-shirts printed. Can I have some of what you were on at Bedworth? WassaiL! V |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Mr Red Date: 01 Dec 01 - 07:25 AM My brain hurts I suffer from having a terrible name for faces I know a lot of mugs amd a few names but the decryption process is a bit 128 bit. Add to that a double cypher of nicknames & ......... how to recognise a 'catter? my brain hurts |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Liz the Squeak Date: 02 Dec 01 - 04:03 AM What was I on at Bedworth? About 3 hours sleep and overexcited at meeting the Shellbacks en masse..... I'm just naturally ebullient. LTS |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: GUEST,Bella Date: 03 Dec 01 - 01:00 AM so.....if I was to work reeaally hard, and try not to spend my money, and (swallowing fears about war zones) travel up from the antipodes next year.... which festival/s should I aim for over a 3-4 week UK stay? A festival which offers lots of singing and workshops would fit my bill nicely. Thanks in anticipation! Bella |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Liz the Squeak Date: 03 Dec 01 - 02:02 AM Make it August - Sidmouth at one end, Towersey at the other, and every weekend has one in between! Although it may be more expensive that way.... height of season and all that... However, I'm sure more than one 'Catter will be only too happy to put up with you .... sorry, put you up for a while....! LTS |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: Liz the Squeak Date: 03 Dec 01 - 02:05 AM Or May - better rates, Hastings at one end, Chippenham at the other (with extra Bank Holiday this year, thank you Queenie... ) and other things happening in between (odd festivals, Beltane festivals....) and besides, May is the best month (after September) to visit the UK. LTS |
Subject: RE: UK:Bedworth Festival - recommended From: GUEST,Bella Date: 03 Dec 01 - 03:33 AM oooo - sounds exciting...I'm starting to dribble Thanks for the ideas Bella |
