HOUSE OF DELIGHT
by David Callinan

Love is easily accepted in the circles I spin.
A pool of light crimson bright from the lamp shows you in.
A girls stands in the shadows tucked well out of sight,
Grabs your eye, breathes a sigh in the House of Delight.

Then she licks a purple pencil, draws a cross on the wall,
And weaving through the carpets, you glance 'cross the hall.
She asks you your name just to show she's polite,
But all the names are the same in the House of Delight.

To a room dressed for darkness you feel your way in,
And the pale moon gently washes the shapes of your skin.
The music comes softly from the ritual right.
Watch the clock watching you in the House of Delight.

Next door is a general asleep in a chair,
Puts his boots by the door just to show he's been there.
Locked deep in a closet, a baby sleeps tight
'Til its father comes a-calling on the House of Delight.

Sung by Seàn Tyrrell on "Cry of a Dreamer" (1995)

I was curious about David Callinan, as Seán Tyrell recording three Callinan songs on the album "Cry of a Dreamer" including
House of Delight

David Callinan has written several published thrillers, as well as writing songs.

"I spent many years on the road as a musician and singer-songwriter. I played Irish folk music in The Spalpeens in the boom years of the Irish ballad scene. Later, I formed the folk-rock band Urban Clearway whose music was dubbed 'Celtic Swamp Music'.

With Callan and John I released the single 'House Of Delight' and 'Long Shadow Day“, later banned by the BBC for being 'suggestive'. I never understood why.

Urban Clearway toured with Elton John, Billy Connolly, Fairport Convention, Rod Stewart, and many others.

When Urban Clearway broke up, I teamed with band member Mick Flynn to form the folk-rock singer-songwriter duo Callinan-Flynn and recorded an album which today is rated as a 'rare gem' by collectors: 'Freedom's Lament' sells for exorbitant sums on the Internet.

A highlight of my musical career was co-writing a Celtic rock opera for the Edinburgh Festival. Pucka-Ri starred Pierce Brosnan.

I have recorded new material in the last few years. Take a listen to some tracks here. Feel free to download and share if you wish. I sing on some tracks and used session singers on others.

Latest tracks to download are:

Lonely Nights

Time Is A One Way Lane

Give A Little Bit To Me

Don't Take It Out On Me

And for some retro folk-psych listen and download:

Long Shadow Day

House of Delight "
