I'm trying to learn the Davy Spillane/Sean Tyrrell song "One Starry Night" from the singing of the fabulous Lynne Heraud, but there's one phrase I can't quite make out in the third verse:

I'm oft-times drunk; tonight I'm sober,
A constant rover from town to town.
And when I'm dead and my travelling's over,
O Molly Bourne xxx come and lay me down.

Anyone help with the missing phrase - which sounds as if it might be Gaelic akin to A Stor ma Chroi, but I can't be sure?

Molly ban a storin(diminutive of stor=treasure). I am sure this question was asked and answered in a thread quite recently.

So, for them as wants 'em, the lyrics are:

ONE STARRY NIGHT
(Davy Spillane & Sean Tyrrell)

One starry night as I lay sleeping,
One starry night, as I lay on my bed;
I dreamed I heard wagon wheels a-creaking.
When I awoke my love had fled.

And it's many's the mile with you I've travelled
And many's the hour, love, with you I've spent.
I dreamed you were my own love forever,
But now I find, love, that you were only lent.

I'll search the highways and I'll search the byways,
I'll search the burreens and camping places too.
I will enquire of all our people
Have they time or tidings or sight of you?

I'm oft-times drunk; tonight I'm sober,
A constant rover from town to town;
And when I'm dead and my travelling's over,
O Molly ban a storin, come and lay me down.

One starry night as I lay sleeping,
One starry night, as I lay on my bed;
I dreamed I heard wagon wheels a-creaking.
When I awoke my love had fled.

It's Molly Bawn Astoreen. Astor is a dark haired girl. Astoreen would be diminutive and endearing. Molly Bawn, my dear little dark haired one.

Maggie - I chose D for no reason but you could transpose

A          D       G    D
One starry night as I lay sleeping,
                                 A
One starry night, as I lay on my bed;
            D          G       D
I dreamed I heard wagon wheels a-creaking.
       A                D
When I awoke my love had fled.

Yep ... that last line should be "Molly bawn a stoírín (a storeen) come lay me down" Basically means "fair Molly, my little love".

The only incorrect words in your version of the lyrics are "burreen" which should be bohreen, or boreen, bawn instead of "ban", and a stoírín or a storeen instead of "a storin". Wonderful song!

As recorded by Spillane and Tyrrell "Among the Stones'
Quintuple checked:

One starry night as I lay sleeping,
One starry night, as I lay in bed;
I dreamed I heard wagon wheels a-creaking.
When I awoke, my own love had fled.

I've searched the highways, likewise the byways
I searched the bohreens, the camping places too.
I will enquire all of our people
Have they tide or tidings or signs of you?

It's many the mile love, with you I've travelled
Many the hour, love, with you I've spent.
I dreamed you were my love forever,
But now I find, love, you were only lent.

I'm drunk today, but oft times I'm sober,
A constant rover from town to town;
When I'm dead and my sorrows ended,
Molly Bawn a stoírín, come and lay me down.

For it's many the mile love, with you I've travelled
Many the hour, love, with you I've spent
I dreamed you were my love forever
But now I find, love, you were only lent.

cheers

"the ultimate version of this song must be Bill Whaley & Dave Fletchers."

A timely revival of this thread - Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher are appearing today, 8/8/10, at The Day of Lincolnshire Folk Music, Dance and Song, at the George Inn (a.k.a. 'The 600 Whiskies'), Leadenham, nr. Sleaford, 11am - 10pm.

Also appearing are many other Linconshire Folk Luminaries, including the wonderful professor of everything Lincolnshire-Trad, Brian Dawson, Winter-Wilson (of 'Storm Around Tumbledown' fame, amongst many other great self-written songs), Paul Dickinson, Heidi Layton, Better Late Than Naked, and many others.

Be good to see a few 'Catters there!

The lines according to Davy Spillane and Sean Tyrell are - When I'm dead and my troubles over - Come Molly Ban a storin and lay me down.   There's an accent on the 'a' of Ban and also on the 'o' and the 'i' of storin.   Translated, its Molly Ban (my love or dearest darling.)
