Subject: Lyr Add: WAIT TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY (Wood/Fulmer From: Dale Rose Date: 03 Jan 01 - 12:16 AM I don't know why I've waited this long to post this, one of my many favorites. I heard Uncle Dave Macon's version first, but a version I like equally as well is by Cathy Barton and Dave Para. Both are worth having, though Uncle Dave's will be difficult to find. It was issued on Wait Till the Clouds Roll By, Historical HLP-8006 in the 60s, which is long out of print. Dave and Cathy's ~~ well, that is easy, just check with Sandy at Folk-Legacy! On a Day Like Today, Folk Legacy FSI-107, 1986, available only on cassette nowadays, I think, so make that C-107.
The song was written in 1881, and was a big hit of the day, inspiring a reply by the same authors, and a parody entitled Put Me Some Jam-Roll By, Jenny, by Harry Hunter. Sheet music for all three songs are available at Levy, and I know that the original is at the Library of Congress site as well. I will start with the 1881 original, then the version by Dave and Cathy, followed by the Wood/Fulmer answer. Wait Till The Clouds Roll By words by J T Wood, music by H J Fulmer, 1881
Jenny, my own true loved one,
How I will miss you, my darling,
Chorus
Jenny, when far from thee, love,
And will I come to you darling?
Chorus
Jenny, I'll keep your image
Dry then your teardrops, my darling,
Chorus Comment from the notes by Dave Para: Knowing only Uncle Dave's version until recently, we asked Bob Coltman to write us a third verse. Drawing from his expertise and his affection for old-time music, Bob offered us the gem we sing here.
Uncle Dave sings basically the same version as the first two verses by Cathy and Dave, with only a couple of minor variations. He sings There's where the storm is raging high , and sings then I will come to you, rather than I will come for you. Note his invention of the word bound'ring, which replaces bounding as written by Wood, and his lyric changes, some of which are at least as good as the original.
Wait Till The Clouds Roll By
Jenny, my own true loved one,
How I will miss you, my darling,
Chorus
And, Jenny, when far from thee, love,
Then I will come for you, my darling.
Chorus
Jenny, a star up above you
My arms enfold you, my darling;
Chorus I'll Wait Till The Clouds Roll By words by J T Wood, music by H J Fulmer, 1887? (can't quite make out the year)
Willie, tho' sad our parting,
Tho' I shall miss thee, my darling,
Chorus
Willie, the days are weary,
Deep in my heart I will treasure
Chorus
Willie, tho' far you're sailing,
Love in the heart lives forever! Chorus

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Wait Till The Clouds Roll By From: GUEST,Arkie Date: 03 Jan 01 - 09:33 PM Dale, I agree. This is a great song and not the kind of thing one would usually associate with Dave Macon. Another song in a similar vein is "Old Ties". |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Wait Till The Clouds Roll By From: Dale Rose Date: 03 Jan 01 - 11:18 PM I have added the RA file for Dave Macon's version of Wait Till The Clouds Roll By to my website. At the moment you can only get to it through this thread. The file will download completely before playing. I have given you only about a 40 second clip of Cathy Barton & Dave Para's version because I want you to run right out and BUY it. One of these days I am going to get around to listing my top Folk Albums of the Century ~~ this is one of them. (See link to Folk Legacy in my first post) On a Day Like Today, Folk Legacy C-107 On a Day Like Today, Jenny, Get Your Hoecakes Done/Rye Straw/Ships in the Clouds, The Lily of Arkansas, Dance at Windy's Place/Ragtime Annie, Jimmy in the Swamp/Missouri Mud, Go March Along, Jim Bludso of the Prairie Belle, Neighbors, John Aaron's Farewell to Cuyahoga, Mike Fink, Shamus O'Brien/Piedmont/Wideman's Quickstep, Song of the Cowboys, and Wait Till the Clouds Roll By It doesn't get any better than that. |
Subject: Wait 'til the clouds roll by From: Mary Humphreys Date: 06 Apr 02 - 03:06 AM I am looking for the words to the song 'Wait 'til the clouds roll by' as sung by Pete Coe and was written by , I think it was Wood & Fulman, in the middle of the 19th century. I have searched the Mud Cat lists and done a web search but can only find references to the recordings - not the lyrics. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Wait Till The Clouds Roll By From: GUEST,Dale Date: 06 Apr 02 - 08:09 AM Someone just asked for the lyrics to this great old song. Links to individual files no longer work at Tripod, but you can usually get around that by copying and pasting in the location bar instead of clicking on the link. http://goodoldsongs.tripod.com/waittill.rm AND http://goodoldsongs.tripod.com/waittil3.rm should get you to the Macon and Barton/Para files I mention in my post of 03-Jan-01 - 11:18 PM. Thanks to Jeff for linking to this thread. |
