We are having a really unusual winter here in Alaska. Record breaking stuff.

Fairbanks which routinely has -40 degree temperatures, and on occasion, gets really cold weather, is enjoying 20 degrees above temperatures. Anchorage which normally has lots of snow by this time has none. Juneau has not yet had a decent snowfall this winter, and our temperatures have been going as high as 51 degrees. Hey, those are practically summertime temps here!

I don't think the end is near- what's 'end' and how do we define 'near?- I think we're tilting! In 50 years Juneau will probably have banana and papaya groves and killer bees, snakes and possums.

Last week when Florida had 31 degrees, we stood at 43! This time of year, normal for us is from -5 to +20. (All temps Fahrenheit)

That's gotta be why, spaw! In Wyoming, we usually get 1 or 2 weeks of below 0 F. in Jan or Feb, this year we got it in mid Dec. I figure there will be another week or 2 of it before March. About the normal amount of snow for Torrington, but we are in a deep valley, and never get a lot of accumulation. We are called "The Bannana Belt" of Wyoming........I'm cold from Nov to June.....

"What, me worry?" Pointless exercise, ljc. Either it happens or it doesn't, but there is not much you can do about it, now is there? If it happens, you will live or you will die. If you live, life is gonna be a bitch afterwards, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

It's a matter of science, not a debate between optimists and pessimists.

Climate change is happening, but we can still prevent it from becoming critical.

This doesn't mean "change or die", it means maintaining the most important thing you have - your home - so that your kids can enjoy it too.

It's like owning a corvette. You can burn it out, or you can take care of it so that it can be used again.

The difference is, that there is only one, and everyone has an equal claim to it. If I ruin it when it's my go, it will be less fun and more dangerous for those who wish to use it after me.

Then I wonder which I value more. My home, (Earth) or a corvette.

ljc, it is not too late, IF enough people would live in a green manner. I think we are having changes and they may be accelerated, but the actions of each and every one of us CAN make a difference, just hopefully the majority will choose the save our mother direction. I know that sounds like pollyanna, but it is true.

Recycle
Conserve water and other resources
Use earth friendly products, there are SO many available now
Plant trees
Fight city hall, state gov. and the feds on environmental debacles

I am convinced that if we do have an earth tilt, it will be for the best. Maybe not for all of us, but for the earth and her critters. I do think, if it happens, there will be many leftover to show the new ones how to do things properly. BUT, I do NOT think it has to come to that!! I think it could get a lot worse before it gets better, though. Do I sound confused? I probably am, trying to believe in the Highest Good for all concerned and shaking my head at the constant waste and disregard I see around me.

Finally, I do believe that, just as we lit a candle for Wesley's sons, and Mousethief's neice, so can we use that concentrated energy to help heal the earth. When I lived in CT, a group of us got together one Sunday per month for a Mother Earth healing ceremony/meditation. Doing that keeps one focused on the practical things one can do as well and I miss it. Maybe we should start having one once per month in PalTalk - Healing songs for Our Mother.

Meditation and prayer and proclamations- that's the ticket...

In tonight's local paper is this report:

(City Assembly Board Member)Frankie Pillifant submitted a proclamation that passed unanamously at a meeting Monday night. "The people and assembly of Juneau most respectfuly request that the Power Having Authority Over Snow grant our request for usable precipitation in the form of snow sufficient for downhill thrills, but insufficient to requie rooftop shoveling," the proclamation stated.

"It think it's going to help," (Eaglecrest Ski Area manager) Gary Mendivil said. "Sometimes you've got to embarrass the weather into doing something."

Hey, we know how to do these things.

This involves a lot more and could require one to take some kind of action, etc. NOT that I don't think Mudcatters are willing, it just takes more energy...nice little catch-22, takes more of our energy to conserve energy and our home.

It's hard not to think that in 50 years or less, the species running the earth might be cockroaches. We as humans seem to be relatively undisturbed by massive extinctions and die-offs of plants and animals. It's almost as if we are running full tilt off the edge of a cliff that we can't see, and we simply ignore the warning signs posted in plain sight. It's definitely getting warmer, there are lakes in the polar regions where there used to be ice, the permafrost is melting, there has been an increase in volcanic and seismic activity worldwide--and I suspect these things grow exponentially, both in terms of their impact and the amount of denial we as humans experience. Maybe the unavoidable conclusion is just too unthinkable--the human ego system globally protecting itself--it's hard to know. And, will the earth survive? I think I would personally feel a whole lot better if I thought the earth was simply trying to shrug homo sapiens off, and once that was done, life could get back to normal around here.

blt, I have no doubt the earth will survive in one form or another. It drives people nuts when I tell them that and also that homo sapiens are a fairly new arrival which she can well do without and had done for millennia before their arrival! We're just a drop in the bucket of earth's history...it's that ego you mentioned which keeps people from realising that the earth does not and will not exist for humankind alone.

Personally, I doubt whether the ramblings of a third-century "divine" (aka Revelations) have any relevance whatsoever.

"Things that you're liable to read in the Bible ain't necessarily so."

The gas prices thread gives ample evidence of mankind's basic selfishness. For my own part, I consider that anything we mere mortals can do, whether positive or negative, is merely tinkering at the margins.

Other factors acting on our planet, like sunspots, the solar wind, the action of El Nino or the Gulf Stream are so huge and, despite the claims of some scientists, so unpredictable, that for us to claim full responsibility is sheer arrogance. That doesn't mean that we have to be wantonly destructive, however.

Whatever your "system of faith", we are only the temporary custodians of our world, and it behoves us to minimise our adverse impact upon it.

But ...

"... remember, when you're feeling small and insecure, how amazingly unlikely is your birth, and pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space, because there's bugger all down here on earth!"

So it seems the concensus is "so what".Are you sure the earth wasn't put here for us?If you look at this experience of life as a period of learning then what have we learned? There seems to be a great deal of denial going on regarding the state we are in.The question has to be asked"Why are all these various situations coming about"Some of you seem to be on the right track when you say about the earth fighting back and trying to kick us off.
However, that begs the question!Just to digress from the weather for a minute, why can we not get along with each other? It seems to me that earlier races, who were not so concerned with stuff, seemed to have a more enlightened view of the world.
I am trying to talk about this without getting esoteric, but i am finding it very difficult.I am not interested in debating the pros and cons of various half thought out positions on this subject. What i am interested in is trying to find out if someone else out there has seriously pondered this and what they have learned.

I gathered that Kat as we have spoke along that line before.Doesn't it seem peculiar that people can blether away about inane topics but the fate of millions of inhabitants of our beautiful planet are in the balance?I find the same response from the majority of people i approach about it.This is not a "religious"subject as we are all in this together. Are we afraid of the Mudcat dragon??We had a brief stab at reincarnation a while back but it seemed to get a few backs up.If we are here now, where were we before and where do we go next,or is that IT.This question needs an answer one way or another. Why are we afraid to talk about this?

THEIR BRAINS WERE SMALL AND THEY DIED (Mark Graham)

When I sit in contemplation of the human situation
I often feel a certain sense of pride.
For our achievements are many and mighty
And the evidence cannot be denied.
But my reverie is shaken 'cause my thoughts are always taken
To a tragedy that happened long ago,
When there moved throughout the land Beings awesome and grand
The fabulous dinosaur.

They were creatures in a manner quite reptilian
In their unique and stylish way,
And their numbers could be reckoned in the millions;
But there are zero of these heroes in the world today.
They had music, art and fashion, there was dinosauric passion
And I think they'd be enraged and mortified Their brains were small and they died

Perhaps some asteroid that mother earth could not avoid
Became the agent of their premature demise.
Well l understand that these things can happen,
So who are we to criticize?
When we'll spend most any price to have the ultimate device
That insures the perfect global suicide.
Well, l would venture instead that the humanoid head
Is where the tinier brain resides.

And when we're gone our works they'll start to crumble
Until nothing can be found.
In ten million years some other guys may stumble
On our fossils, then some asshole will begin to expound,
In some scientific study to his cockroach science buddies
They were big dumb and slow, they couldn't go with the flow
Their brains were small, and they died.

RIP Mother Earth

Murray, at first when I went into fix it for you, I saw that you had typed in that line. Then I realised the reason it didn't show was because you missed a bracket at the end of your line break just before. It is there now.

ljc, I am not afraid to talk about it and I have very specific views and beliefs, as you know, I just don't feel like opening myself up to the kind of ridicule and posturing that went on last time.

I do find it pretty incredulous, esp. when you consider whole other societies have a long standing tradition of being in tune and paying attention, which, of course, involves their belief in a daily spirituality and connectedness with all things.

If Western physics and Eastern philosphies are true, energy continues on, and I would think that that would include the energy that constitutes a human life.

My own thoughts on this are that it takes an act of imagination to step outside the way that, so far, we have conceived of ourselves. I'm not at all convinced this is a matter of time, or that it involves an unknown process. I tend to believe in avatars, or the reincarnation, over the years, of a human who speaks directly to other humans specifically about this issue. The history of how this human is then received is not too good, but perhaps that is irrelevant.

I also understand the earth as sentient or as intelligent; when I said she was trying to shake human beings off, I had in mind an image of getting rid of lice or fleas. However, that's probably doing a disservice to the earth's intelligence. On the other hand, she may simply be responding out of common sense and the desire to live.

Once, an astrologer assured me that I was the reincarnation of an aspect of the goddess, Lilith. I had never heard of Lilith up to that time, so imagine my surprise to be told she was Adam's first wife. I think that's interesting and certainly improves on the Adam and Eve story. This astrologer also insisted that, as this aspect, at one time I "was" a planet. That's also interesting, although at the time I thought the guy was a crackpot. However, it ties into the question of "where" human energy goes--does this energy return into a sort of galactic pool, waiting to seed an auspicious planet? The latest news in astronomy is that new planetary systems keep being identified, along with "bodies" that can't be called planets (they're too big and don't behave like planets)--what's going on there?

As far as the level of current denial among those of us who are earthbound, I've wondered if it's a response to the increased stress of a degrading weather system world-wide, the level of poverty, drug-use, violence (war, domestic violence, abuse, gangs), hunger, illness--I think this way because of the families I see on a daily basis who are now in multi-generational patterns of abuse. If they are a microcasm of the world at large, human beings are suffering terribly and, in general, appear unable to break these abusive cycles, either with themselves, their families, their communities, or the environment. Why? And, if there is a community of humans who do not feel this immobilized or traumatized, who are they? Where are they?

And I have been wondering why my friends have been calling me lizzard lips....

Thank you blt. I see you have given this some serious thought. We have to get rid if dogma in order to have even the remotest hope of enlightenment.I admit that it is hard to think of this heavy stuff when you are starving, being shot at etc.Even the smallest exertion in this direction will show the inter-connectedness of everything. There are, believe it or not quite a few enquiring people around in various places. It seems to me me that if each of us strives to clean up our act then the cumulated effect will be beneficial to the whole.
Negative thoughts are a great drawback in this regard as they are drawn toward each other and therefore increase their power. The same can be said for positive thoughts. One of there reasons ,i think, people are afraid to face the problem is that they realise the enormity of darkness we have created around ourselves by wrong thinking.
This thought- form business is very important to the effect on the material world as'if allowed to continue the present course can only drag us down.
we are ding fine with this thread so far,no hot-spots,if they pop up LEAVE THEM ALONE and they will fizzle out on their one due to lack of fuel.Maybe people will not be so reticent to give their views on this.BTW,I deliberately chose the innocuous Weather title as "The End is near"would have lit the fire. john
