My girlfriend and I were talking about this. I sleep on the left for no other reason that holding her under my right arm, with her head on my chest, makes me glad to be alive.

Which side do you sleep on?

Apparently, psychologists reckon that sleeping on the 'bedroom door side' is subconsciously being protective.

I always thought this was interesting, too. Whether alone or accompanied, I sleep on the left side of the bed, usually on my right side. I thought *all* women slept on that side of the bed. :) Am I correct in thinking that women are more opinionated about which side of the bed they sleep on? Actually wondering.

I always sleep on the left side. In my apartment weird things happen when I sleep on the right side. I think that side is haunted. So I avoid the right side at all costs.

When I'm in it, it's the left side, also the side currently closest to the door. He gets the side closest to the phone, as it's always for him in the middle of the night. When I'm alone, it's the middle or crosswise....and we have lots of furry help in our bed, so positions tend to be rotary.

When I was married, I slept on the side farther from the bathroom, because my ex didn't want to risk tripping on anything in the middle of the night (the implication being that it was OK if I tripped). Now I sleep where I damn well please, which happens to be the right side, most of the time - whether it's close to the bathroom or not.

When alone, I sleep on the right side - that is, if I'm on my back, my right arm is next to the edge of the bed and there's "space" next to my left arm. That space is generally occupied by one or both of the dogs. Cats wedge in wherever there's room left, one of them usually between my ankles. The big dog generally "drifts" closer and closer, so if the not-quite-as-big dog has to go out in the middle of the night, I have to either get back in on the other side or make the big sleeping-like-a brick hunk of dog move - no easy task, I tell you.

The most recent man I shared my bed with slept where I generally do when alone, and I slept to his left. The dogs stayed in the living room - they figured that out on their own.

The previous guy slept to my left. No dogs at the time.

When I was married, my husband slept to my right. It was a different room in a different house, and a different bed. No dogs, cats at the foot. (Different cats, too.)

I heard that our sleeping position is somewhat shaped by the position we took in the womb-- curled up to the right or left, for instance.

I sleep draped over pillows, tummywise, turned to the right or the left, on Hardiman's left. Chronic tendonitis everywhere has made the pillows necessary, and I pack smaller versions when we travel. Most important are the down, plump-able wrist pillows that help me keep out of the Carpal Tunnel of Hell, and the one little pillow that makes any big pillow work for my neck.

Hardiman sez he doesn't care which side, and can sleep anywhere, so I always get to pick sides when we travel. If the bed is not big enough for us and all the pillows we extort from the front desk, plus the ones I make from towels.... we flop the motel mattress down on the floor to spread out. I am SERIOUS about sleep.

As long as we are trying to make people cry (*G*), I'll tell you the most adorable part of our sleeping arrangement. This is that even in deep sleep Hardiman always knows I am there, and will often reach over in his sleep to hold hands. Makes insomnia kinda better than it used to be, since you have to be awake to notice, anyway.

Every once in awhile I get very scared at night (old reasons), and Hardi is great about getting up to check EVERYTHING in the house, armed appropriately to our area's hazards. And other times I get a certain blue feeling that only can be dealt with if he jams his butt right up into the small of my back and sleeps that way all night long. (For those of you who know my history, that one is twin stuff.)

Oh and stuffed animals tuck nicely beneath the chin... just another little pillow. Mine is a little beanbag and fluffstuffed pink pig, in a stretched out sort of "flying" position. His is a similarly made brown bear. Sometimes these talk to each other, or sometimes they are subjected to a tug of war. Hardiman steals my pig and then I have to retaliate. The bear gets it first, but often a hysterical wrestling match ensues.

I'll tell you what WE want to know.. are we the only couple who makes up song parodies in bed? Well, gee!! Ya gotta do SOMETHING if you've given up cigarettes!

Surveys like this are among the many charming things about the Mudcat.

Good grief! In the early days, I was so overjoyed to have a woman in bed with me that she could sleep anywhere she wanted!

My position has changed many times over the years. During one era, in the role of master protector (ha!) of the house, I felt it was important to be nearest the bedroom door.

Later on, it was important for my companion of the time to be able to easily access the bathroom.

When one of my girls was being breastfed the slot nearest the door was reserved for the one who had the equipment to accomplish the task.

Years later it became important for the woman in my life to have access to the shelf that held the remote for the VCR. That put her farther from the door.

Left? Right? Hell, which of the thirty or so dwellings would you want to talk about?

I usually start on theside nearest the wall, but I usually end up lying halfway under the covers, off the pillow facing the rest of the room and nearly being suffocated by the quilt. Needless to say I have quite a lot of bther with my neck and shoulders!

Over the years since having children I have always slept nearest to them whether that was in a cot in our room or nearest the door once they moved into their own room. At present that means I sleep on the right side of the bed. I usually start the night with my head on Geoff's chest but find that after a while my arm goes to sleep and my neck is twisted so I turn over and sleep on my right side.

I prefer the side of the bed towards the door, whatever that is. At home, the foot of the bed faces the door. I fall asleep faster if I sleep on my right side, so I sleep on the left side of the bed. this works out well because Curmudgeon prefers the right side (which creates an argument if we're someplace where that's the side of the bed closest to the door). I don't like to sleep on the wall side of a bed (having to crawl over someone to get up in the night). The cats, of course, take their 3/4 of the bed out of the middle.

Our son slept on the underside once.

He had arranged to enter the Navy and had packed up his room in preparation for our shipping his stuff after schooling ended. Then his departure date changed so he stayed a few days longer than planned.

We didn't know till he told us that he had slept under the mattress to stay warm instead of unpacking his bedding. (I think he was trying to toughen up for Basic Training.) He said it was quite warm and toasty under the mattress, which, BTW, was on the floor, as per his choice when we moved in.

We only have one alarm clock and that is on the right hand side of the bed,(where it plugs in), so whoever has to get up first (usually my wife) sleeps on that side. That way whoever gets to lie in doesn't get disturbed...it has worked for us for years.

I slep on the couch in the livingroom. I snore like a rusty sawmill cutting tin (her words)and, since she works and I don't, I rub her back until she goes to sleep and then retire to the couch to read until the wee smalls. On those ocassions when we do sleep together, I'm on the right.

Original Poster (John Harris) - I do exactly the same as you, for the same reason (to be tenderly close to HER), but switch sides from time to time in no particularly predictable fashion. Either way seems to work fine.

When sleeping alone, I seem to gradually navigate toward the left side of the bed, which may be because of my political biases... (Grin).

See, now I'm going to sound weird...
I sleep with my back to the wall, on the "inside" of the bed. If the Other Half is there, he sleeps between me and the room (the bed HAS to be up against a wall). That way, any axe murderers/crazed knifemen/monsters etc. get him first (sorry love). If he's not there, I sleep in the middle of the bed and must be able to see the whole room from where I'm lying. Perhaps it's some sort of weird primeval instinct. Or perhaps I'm just paranoid. Oh, and the door has to be locked.

I neglected, earlier today, to raise a point that I fear may vitiate this entire survey. By the left side of the bed I mean the left as seen by someone looking at it while standing at the foot. Is that how others understand the matter? Or would you mean it from the point of view of a person sitting in bed or lying on his or her back?

To me, the 'left' is my left when lying on my back, with my head towards the headboard. So that's why it's called a headboard!!

'Stage Left' as opposed to 'Camera Left'.

However, it's purely academic when one sleeps alone...

I was sleeping on the side closest to the night stand. Then I noticed the mattress was sagging so I moved over to the middle. I try to move around so as not to have peaks & valleys.

John always sleeps on the left of the bed (when you're lying in it) and I sleep on the right. This was ok when we first met and we were sleeping in his house, but when we slept in my house,he got very confused when half awake, and tried to get into the wardrobe, which in my house was where the door was in his!

Incidentally, both our sets of parents slept the same way round as we do - is this significant?!
