Subject: bent baubie From: GUEST,egroeg_chemcity@emaster.net Date: 28 Jan 01 - 05:38 AM I am serching for the lyrics to a Scotish tune, adapted for the smallpipes, called the Bent Baubie. Any help welcome George. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bent baubie From: Snuffy Date: 28 Jan 01 - 08:32 AM Try searching for "Crooked" (or "Crookit" as the Scots say). They mean the same as bent, but search engines don't know that. Wassail! V |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bent baubie From: sheila Date: 28 Jan 01 - 09:42 AM Also try changing baubie to bawbie. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bent baubie From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 28 Jan 01 - 10:10 AM Indeed; there are plenty of references out there to "Crooked Bawbee" and "Crookit Bawbee", though of course they're mostly about the pipe tune, which is widely played in the North of England as well as in Scotland. There is, apparantly, a "broken token" song of the same name, though I don't know whether or not the tune is the same; I haven't found any texts. Malcolm |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bent baubie From: GUEST,Boab Date: 24 Oct 01 - 01:12 AM Captain Wheels again!!! Mostly sung as a male-female duet. A beautiful melody on Northumbrian pipes. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bent baubie From: GUEST,Stavanger Bill Date: 24 Oct 01 - 09:26 AM Captain Wheels !!! Thanks loads - I've been after those lyrics myself for ages. I originally heard the song sung as a duet by Valerie Dunbar and a male singer not mentioned. I agree with Boab, and now thanks to you we can start singing it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bent baubie From: Scabby Douglas Date: 24 Oct 01 - 11:12 AM I haven't heard this sung for a long time, but the Youth Choir of which my wife was a member (coughs uncontrollably) ... years ago, used to have this performed this ad nauseam, as a duet. I think that given sensitive handling, it could be a nice wee song. The way they did it was with the sentiment layered on so thickly, it made me squirm. But, time passes, and our perceptions change... so enjoy it...
Cheers

Subject: Lyr Add: CROOKIT BAWBEE From: GUEST,David Procter Date: 08 Nov 01 - 11:11 AM <*cue eerie music*> A good number of years ago, my mum brought a copy of a cassette tape back with her to the States when she was visiting relatives in the UK. Our famioley hails form Lancashire, and we emigrated to America in the mid-1950's. Somehow, I got the tape, and I have had it in storage for at least a decade, me thinks, and I found it recently when I was gouing through boxes, etc.
It's a copy of a tape of Scottish folk songs. I don't know the titles to most of the songs, although *Mull of Kintyre* is among them as well as *Scotland the Brave*. Since the words are authentic Scottish dialect, it was very difficult to pick out something that *might* be the title. I thought it might be "Bonnie Glen [Sheer ?]". After listening to the song over and over again, I managed to decipher and locate reference to "The Crooked Bawbee".. I asked my UK newsgroup to which I contribute if anyone knew anything (we have a few Scots) and I was directed to uk.music.folk just yesterday - and I posted a message with my inquiry to them. This morning I received a response that linked me to your forum where I have just copied the words!! Thanks very much!! :) Now, the last verse is missing in your version of the lyrics; it's sung as an harmonizing duet by *both* the man and the woman - who have been singing the previous verses alternating between them. I have edited the lyrics to make them easier to follow, and I have added the last verse. Other than the missing last verse, the lyrics you posted here follow my recording to a letter! Here we are......
*The Crooked Bawbee*

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bent baubie From: GUEST,Boab Date: 09 Nov 01 - 04:06 AM I would bet that the lyrics required by Guest oegreg are those quoted by Captain Wheels and David Proctor. These are the lyrics to the tune which is so popular on the small and Northumbrian pipes. Wolfgang's "Bonnie Glenshee" I know as "the Bonnie High hills"--and is, by the way, much preferred personally as a song. BTW---you will find Glenshee by turning left off the main road to the ski slopes in Perthsire [?]. It is signposted. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bent baubie From: GUEST,Ian in Sydney Date: 26 Feb 02 - 09:43 PM Wonderful! I've been looking for these words for years. Now, the hard question: does anyone know of an available recording of this song, preferably on CD? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bent baubie From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 27 Feb 02 - 12:21 AM Answer to old question. Redpath's songs are available on tapes: Redpath The Crookit Bawbee is on one of them |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bent baubie From: GUEST,Ian in Sydney Date: 27 Feb 02 - 01:15 AM Thanks. I had a look at the Redpath recordings - by the way, they are now available on CD. I was really hoping for a duet version, such as mentioned by David Procter. I remember it in that form from when I was growing up in Scotland (maybe 50 years ago!) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bent baubie From: Jon Bartlett Date: 27 Feb 02 - 04:11 AM The other title for this fine kailyard piece is "The Dishonest Policeman". :-} |
