UPDATE AS "PRAISE'S PRAYER CHAIN" RESUMES OPERATION

In early November 2000, a prayer chain by e-mail began among several Christian Mudcatters and friends who had been asking each other to pray as individuals as needs arose. The prayer chain grew in number of recipients and requests for prayer throughout that month and was issued weekly or oftener as urgent prayer needs were submitted. I coordinated the messages and maintained the address list, until our housefire in early December, when another participant took over the list until I could get back up and running. (Since then "Praise" has had a name change to "WYSIWYG.")

The Prayer Chain is still very new and is still creating itself via input received from participants. Its existence evinces respect for Mudcatters who find Mudcat-posted prayer requests problematic, and it allows for prayerful regard of deeply personal prayer requests in an environment free of flames and rancor.

The prayer list also includes a prayer for the Mudcat Cafe and its leaders. Of course this prayer, like each prayer on the list, is entirely optional! Participants are expected to exercise mature responsibility in how they use and respond to the list-- there are no Prayer Chain Police forcing anyone to pray the words provided or for the situations described. Participants also are expected and asked to provide feedback to me about the conduct of the Prayer Chain. This includes thoughtful discussion toward consensus should anything about the prayer list be offensive to them in any way.

WANT THE FAQs? The current operating guidelines for the Prayer Chain are detailed in a four-page FAQs document available from me via e-mail. (If requested I will post the document here.)

The subjects covered by the current FAQs include:

Who participates?

Is this for Christians only?

How is the list used?

How are common experiences shared?

How does the Prayer Chain "fit" with Mudcat prayer threads?

Why not use Mudcat PM's?

How are addresses and security handled?

What about politics?

Are you serving any spam?

What's the bad news?

What's the good news?

What if it gets too big?

How does one join the prayer chain?

    UPDATES

In response to this thread, new prayer requests not posted in threads have come in, and several people have signed up to be part of the Prayer Chain. In addition, several requests for information have been sent in.

The technical management of the prayer list has changed somewhat, and one prayer chain member found the changes a bit less personal than the way it had been done in the past. So now, new urgent requests are sent around the way I used to do them, and then periodically the whole list is edited into the table of current requests and this is sent around.

It seems to be working well to ask people posting thread prayer requests if they want their request sent on to the Prayer Chain.

There have been a few instances where the prayer of one has resulted in a reply from another, of support. I have forwarded these, but the main focus continues to be prayer as asked, rather than advice.

It's been a real privilege to do my part of this. On "Prayer Chain" day, when the material is bing edited together, there is a sense I described to one person of a mighty fountain of care and attention that rushes up in pulsating plumes like a fountain. It goes right through me and goes on, up and away, in a delightful way that is quite invigorating for me. (I think my most accurate prayers, over the matters submitted, occur then.)

And nearly every time the list is reworked, an amazingly compassionate request for a new prayer need comes in just before sending the list out, or a new prayer partner will join.

These things tell me that we are doing something right. So I ask, Lord, what next, to make this work even better?

I'd appreciate a couple of things.

First, if you are a person who has asked for prayer, please send updates also, as things change. Especially, please send your thanksgivings for the blessings, large and small, that you notice occurring in the area for which prayer was asked. Not only is this a smart thing to do in practical terms, and not only is it what I understand God asks of us-- we all learn from one another's prayers and thanksgivings.

Second, I could really use a Mudcat volunteer with edit functions to join this effort and help maintain this thread. This person would also hold a copy of the address book and administrative materials, so that the operation of this list does not depend on my health alone.

Third, if you are a member of the Prayer Chain, please help keep this thread refreshed from time to time. You never know when the need may arise when I'm not looking.

Thanks to all the people participating in this effort.

(Click HERE to e-mail me. Subject line: PRAYER.)

That is a very good question. It would certainly be easier to maintain that way and I have offered that option to the group a number of times. There is, in fact, a small site already set up with thread capability, should the expansion of the list make this necessary.

There also has been the option of hanging the whole list up at Beliefnet.

However, the reason it has not gone in either of these directions is simply this-- so far, people participating have preferred that it be done this way.

You see, this has all evolved in response to requests, not because I was looking around for a thing to start. If I had been looking for a thing to start, this would not have been it, actually. *G* And when I do look for a new thing to start, it is usually not in cyberspace.

Hardiman and I leave Sunday for a trip, and are coming back the 30th. We will be online a little. We may not have cookies, so maybe no PMs.

If there are urgent requests in the meantime please use this Prayer Chain thread to ask us to be in touch.

One of the Chain members has an old address book (the same as my old Hotmail prayer chain address book) but it does not contain all the latest people to join the Chain. (I don't have time to copy the new addresses to my Hotmail book or to one of you to act as backup this time, sorry.)

So if you post a request for contact in the thread, either I or that person will likely respond with instructions where to e-mail your request.

    To Prayer Chain members:
You can make this chain stronger (with God's help) by sending me updates and thanksgivings to circulate. When you do, you can make the job of running this easier by being very specific about giving me permission to distribute what you have written. (Because I also correspond with many of you about your individual situations, I never assume that something you send me is meant to go farther unless you say so.) You can also help by refreshing this thread so that it comes up at least once a week.

And if any of you have a Mudcat Edit button, please let me know when I get back from our trip. Never think YOUR approach to prayer isn't "good enough" or "real." It matters more than we can know, I think, just as it is. ~Susan

How about putting the FAQs up on a website? That would make it a lot easier for people to see what the prayer chain is about without emailing you. Just a basic free site would do well for that. And you can blue clicky it from anywhere.

Thanks, hesperis. Actually I like the e-mailing... the contact leads, often, where it needs to go.

I am full of thanks for the privilege of being trusted with all the confidences the prayer list has entailed, today, especially.

One operational change is that I will tend to be taking weekends off from Prayer Chain matters, though, to take a Sabbath from it (*G*) and to focus better on the weekly music for our Saturday night service. If there is a volunteer to cover it on weekends for time-senstive requests, please let me know.

    John in Hull--

A prayer chain is simply a group of people who agree to pray for prayer requests that will be brought before them. In some chains, it works phone-to-phone, where each agrees to call the next member on the list and pass the prayer request along, and I guess then each one would pray with the next one on the list as they make the calls.

Ours is an e-mail list, and yes, we have been praying for Catspaw since he requested it (or took me up on the offer, I don't recall which) for a long time.

One of the nice things is that often, a lot of the people on the chain get the e-mail message at about the same time, and PFOOM! Up goes a lot of simultaneous spontaneous prayer. "Holding" one end of that, and getting the replies that sometimes come, is quite something-- packs a big wallop. That in turn elicits another burst of prayer from me. It's extremely cool! IMNSHO.

Some of us also pray in song, meaning that as we mull over the matter put beore us, our prayer comes out in sung or played music. Sometimes a known piece, sometimes one made up or "given" to us in the moment. Whaddaya expect, from a bunch of folkies! *G* Others of us pray wordlessly.... or use pre-written prayer formats... or rosaries... It's all pretty loosely set up from that viewpoint... the assumption is that each person participating has or does a thing they think of as prayer, and that's how they participate.

If you would like to know more please e-mail me at the link posted above and I'll send you the current FAQ.

Guest Enough, in one of the earlier Monty Python sketches (here), a bedroom-furniture salesman put his head in a bag at any mention of the word "mattress". The remedy was for all available shop assistants and customers to stand in a tea-chest and loudly sing "Jerusalem."

Unfortunately the sketch showed the remedy to be effective. Once enough people could be mustered to sing from the tea-chest, Salesman Lambert would remove the bag from his head. I say "unfortunately" because I assume it was this success that spawned prayer chains.

Like many - maybe all - Mudcatters, I hope Spaw goes on to enjoy many years of rude good health. But maybe Praise could tell us how many prayers God likes to hear in a case like this, before he will consider direct intervention?

I find the concept offensive. Any god who is responsive to such a numbers game should be treated with contempt, rather than be fawned upon by craven loons grovelling around on bended knee. (I trust that will help keep them feeling smug and self-righteous *G*)

The posts are all mine because it is I who cooridate the chain and I who know when it needs to be refreshed for the use of the participants in the prayer chain.

Using this thread to protest its presence merely serves to keep it at the top of the list. Continue doing so if you wish, but again, the purpose of the thread is purely to provide information to the Mudcat members to whom it is of interest.

May I remind you there are around 10,000 members of this forum, and surely 1 thread once in a while can't do any harm. As many people have said before if you don't like the subject don't read the thread, this thread cleary states it's about praying, if that does not interest you then read a thread that does.

Some of us appreciate the flagging that this alternative is available: better than going into the weary battles we used to be in with this. To repeat, the purpose of this thread is informational.

The latest information is that the facts of the prayer chain's operation are posted for public view elsewhere outside this forum. It is an experimental forum and technical difficulties have caused it to go down from time to time, but it is there and when it is down it is not for long.

These other extraneous posts only confuse people who tend to read just the last post of this thread when they are looking for fresh information. Continuing them will slow down people's moving over to the other forum which, I thought, is the whole point.

So. Let's get that process back on track. The location of the Prayer Chain FAQ is:

    http://www.jonbanjo.com/forum/topic.asp?topic_id=28&forum_id=3&Topic_Title=Prayer+Chain+Faq%2D%2D+Draft+in+Progress&forum_title=&M=False&S=True
