Norma Waterson, regarded as one of Britain's finest singers, was named folk singer of the year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Waterson is described by Mojo magazine as "probably the finest English singer alive today" and was presented with her prize by acclaimed playwright Willy Russell. In 1996 Waterson's first solo album was narrowly beaten to the Mercury Music Prize by Pulp's Different Class. Along with husband Martin Carthy and daughter Eliza the Waterson-Carthys are considered folk's first family for their output over the years.
Chris Smith: Presented one of the prizes The awards, hosted by Mike Harding, were established last year to raise the profile of folk music. Radio 2 controller James Moir said: "This is a great night for folk music. "The folk music scene is the centre of some of the most exciting and alive music to be heard today, both here in Britain and abroad. "Radio 2 is proud to champion these great performers and great music giving them the national platform they deserve." Singer and songerwriter Billy Bragg and former Smiths star Johnny Marr were guests at the ceremony, which took place in London. Varied styles Other winners included Scottish guitarist Bert Jansch who was given a lifetime achievement award and Taj Mahal who won the Radio 2 Roots award. Taj Mahal's varied musical styles include Chicago blues and Memphis soul together with Cajun and Latin. His recording career began in the 60s with Rising Sons, a group he formed with Ry Cooder. Culture Secretary Chris Smith presented the Horizon Award to rising star Bill (Belinda) Jones whose self-financed first album Turn To Me has been a folk best-seller.
The Davy Lamp in Washington, Tyne & Wear - a well-established venue on the scene - was voted folk club of the year by artists themselves.

Had a feeling that this was a bit of self publicity for the Beeb, but even so there was Ian Stephenson if I'm not mistaken playing his guitar .Any other Mudcatters at the awards?? |

Subject: RE: BBC2 Folk awards 2001 From: zander (inactive) Date: 07 Feb 01 - 10:29 AM I noticed that it was stated on the 5 minute breakfast slot that someone said it was a deliberate action to make folk music more appealing to young people by making it more like pop music. This confirms what I think is the BBCs attitude to folk music, the music is irrelavent as long as the audience figures are good. Cheers, Dave |

Anyway, forget any qualms about the mainstream BBC not knowing how to deal with folk music, there's to be a specific BBS folk website, and that should be reasonably OK, with luck. |

Although, as a Sussex person I was delighted that Bob Copper got his award (the man IS a national treasure) am I alone in thinking that the "Finale", apart from the two male harmonies, was, considering the calibre of the people singing it, a hideous noise? (In fact the sort of thing that gives "folk" a bad name)

I wonder if Norma and Bob Copper shared with each other the fact that the same person has maintained comprehensive Waterson AND Copper family sites for three years. Yep pretty ghastly finale, but in ever such slight mitigation the 'rehearsal' comprised about 1/3 the number who eventually sang.... anyway, you had to be there really:-) But it was a great night for bums like us who never really get to mix with the 'Folkerazzi' let alone spend the night in London. The atmosphere was really friendly and considering the stature of some of the stars, totally lacking in pretension (unless you're not a supporter of this kind of thing, in which case that's just what it is...I disagree however). Anyway, for an 86 year old to receive the recognition Bob did will go down in the Copper Family book of wonderful events. Oh yes Garry, you were discussed with some admiration! Jon |

Subject: RE: BBC2 Folk awards 2001 From: Nemesis Date: 08 Feb 01 - 05:19 AM Actually, listening to the whole thing - I think that was one of the remarkable thingg, i.e., the down-to-Earthness and as you say lack of pretension: very refreshing in this "Posh n' Becks" day and age - performers one could warm to. Though it was a shame then about the finale - still there's always next year!! Meanwhile as I'm local to the Coppers must make an effort to see them. The good old BBC National TV News had a snigger about the Folk Awards on Tuesday morning...ironic when you consider one part of the organisation is actively promoting folk music. Old habits die hard I guess...The Fast Show are pretty good at taking the P... some srt of recognition I suppose ( a 'pastiche' on "All around my hat'). |

West Sussex U.K. Date: 08 Feb 01 - 07:29 PM Last year I did a tongue in cheek magazine review of 2000 Awards where I put myself in the place of an average, uninformed UK radio listener. They gave an award to a song and didn't play the song, an award to Kerr & Fagan and didn't play their music, an award to Martin Hayes for best instrumentalist and didn't play any of his music. They gave two awards to Kate Rusby and only played her once. An award to Joe Boyd and Lucy Duran and did not say who they were or what they had done. An award to Topic Records and did not say why. The Folk Club of the Year was a club that takes place in a Golf Club Ballroom holding about 250 people, books weekly big name guests in a concert stage, has a resident band and no floor singers. They then played a four minute set by Eric Bibb who was there as a presenter, not a winner. When I suggested that an ordinary listener wouldn't know what the hell was going on, I got it in the neck from Martin Carthy, The producer, and the editor of a big magazine. These are the BBC's awards. They don't televise them. They don't give any extra air time to them - they hi-jack the single hour of folk music on their network. The awards are great and well done to the winners but as a piece of radio it is very uninformative. And if that single hour of cruelly edited radio supposed to be evidence of a BBC commitment to folk music as they say in "The Outlaw Josey Wales" - don't piss down my back and tell me its raining. I've just started this year's review. Watch this space. Bill Jones is at The Famous Willows Folk Club, Arundel on June 6th. I've been booking her since she was Belinda of "Moffat and Jones". Great talent! |

I have seen it prominently displayed in several large record stores, so dive in. Stuart |
