Thanks for everyone's help in the past. Here's a new challenge.

There's a Freddy Mercury song with the lyrics:

write your letters in the sand

Anyone know what it is? Or, how to find out? Thanks!

BEK

OH BEK, the search I used was Google (http://www.google.com). I used the words you remembered plus "queen" and "mercury" to narrow it a bit.

As was pointed out: Not Freddy; Brian.

The song is '39.

From the album Night at the Opera (1976).

It's about time dilation due to near- or super-light speed travel.

And I didn't look it up; I know it. I can play it on the guitar and sing it "without book."

braggingly yours,
Alex

Don't get all puffed up, Jon; I just logged in after you posted your answer.

Freddy was a consumate showman. He had vaudeville in his blood. I was fortunate to get to see Queen in concert twice in the 1970's. A real entertainment.

I knew it too! It's on my 1st tape that I sent out. I'm not sure if I sent Jon one...I think I did.

Alex, I can imagine that he was brilliant on stage. I had the oppertunities around that time too but have never been a rock concert goer.

Matt, all my tapes are in a box at the moment and I can't place the song even though it may well be on the tape you sent me. My memory plays weird tricks on me at times - the one that most sticks out in my mind on the tape you sent me was a co-written one - I think Katy (ceithagh) wrote the words and you wrote the music - IMO, it was brilliant but I am dammed if I can even bring the title of that to mind.

Jon, it was "Last Dance", lyrics by ceitagh and music by me. Our first and only collaboration, sadly.

In one of the concerts, they had the speakers on either side of the main stage area, and they were set up in such a way that Freddy could run up and down the stack, all the way to the top of the top speaker, about 20 feet above the stage (well it seemed that way; maybe it was more like 12 feet). All night long he was all over the stage, up and down the speaker stacks. He wore a pair of tights that had built-in suspenders (braces) and no shirt, and he was just wringing with sweat. All that running, and he still sang as cleanly as if he were in the studio. A definite dynamo.

The other 3 members of the band just basically stood in one spot (or sat, in Roger's case), and watched him whip about the stage like a madman. The only time he sat still was to play the piano, and to sing '39.

I'll never forget "Love of My Life." He started singing it, and the whole audience was singing along with him. At one point he just stopped singing, and held the microphone over the audience. Just us singing. It sounded amazingly good! It was a magic moment, which I still treasure.

Another horrible loss to the AIDS scourge.

May his memory be eternal.

Alex

Sammy was low, just watching the show...

Sadly, I didn't get into rock & roll until 1996, and by then it was too late. I would have loved to have see the gang play together. You've GOT to listen to "Teo Torriate" from A Day At The Races. Queen singing in Japanese...what more could speak to my soul?

Thank you! I tried Google and didn't narrow my search far enough. I'm still learning. yes, I believe that is the song!

Love the memories!

I'm surprised. Not only folk but also great stuff like Queen :o)

I have nearly all LPs, some singles and two videos. But unfortunately I was too young to get to a concert. Later I didn't have the money and the time (with two babies). And now - unfortunately - Freddy's gone.

His voice was magic and in his way of transporting music to people he was a kind of magician. Simply "a kind of magic".

Never forgotten.

Sabine
