Subject: Daughters (fairly modern folk song)
From: sos@oz.plymouth.edu
Date: 31 May 97 - 12:21 PM

Since Benjamin Hollister was kind enough to come through for me with the words to my last request, I thought I'd try again. About 10-11 years ago, I had a girlfriend who played me a folk song by a man whose name I forget. I don't think the song was that old at the time, and I think it was just called "Daughters." The folksinger may have been a New England singer, but I'm not sure on that. He wrote it himself, though. The song is about a poor struggling folk singer who is frustrated by his inability to make money, but every time he gets down, his daughters lift his spirits. The only lines I remember are something like, "If I could get just a little ahead, I think I'd invest in some more daughters." and about one young daughter talked about the moon. Ring any bells?

Subject: 'If I had another one thou'...I'd have m
From: GUEST,Cedar

I am looking for a song I heard on NPR years ago, which went something like this "if I had another one thou', or maybe even two, I'd get me another daughter."

I don't know all the lyrics, or who sang/wrote it, or even the title. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Cedar

From another mailing list:

> >Greg Brown has a sweet song about being "A man who's rich in daughters" >that comes to mind:

> > "And if I make a lot of money
> Like another two thou a year...
> or maybe one thou a year...
> I think I'll have myself another daughter..."
> "I'm a man who's rich in daughers"

>

>>This is a *great* song. It's on _The Iowa Waltz_ album on Red House Records.

Thanks Amos, sometimes 1 little snippet does the trick.

DAUGHTERS

One is long and one is short,
One is thin and one is stout.
In the morning when they wake,
Only one's breakfast can I make.

One dances and knows
how many squares hopscotch ought to have.
One goes wah, wah, wah, wah, wah,
wah, wah, wah, wah, ha ha, wah wah.

One won't eat anything much,
I guess she lives on air and sun and noodles.
One's beginnin' to learn that the milk is over there
inside of that shirt beneath the blue eyes of the woman I love.

[chorus:]
I'm a man who's rich in daughters,
And if by some wild chance I get rich in money,
Like say another two thou a year or even one thou a year,
I'm gonna look in to havin' some more daughters.

When my daughter who is tall now was not so tall,
One night we were drivin' home in the truck and I was sad
because I was busted and disgusted,
And she looked out the window and said, "Dad, the moon is comin' home
with us."
She said, "Dad, the moon is comin' home with us."

[repeat chorus]

And in the morning they magic the house,
The one that can walk, walks in warm and still dreamin' to give
me a hug or ask why it's so cold or why is there school,
"Why's it so cold?" or "Why is there school?"
And the one who can't walk or talk yet just lies in bed and laughs,
She just lies in bed and laughs.
