I'm trying to locate a singable English version of a Russian song the refrain of which goes roughly

May there always be sunshine
May there always be blue sky
May there always be mommy
May there always be me!

Anybody got one? Spasibo!

Liland

(The other thread name had quote marks around the song title, which may have made searching difficult. -Joe Offer-)

Pete Seeger sings it. The only verse he does is the one above, first in English, then in Russian.

You can find it on "Together In Concert" by Pete Seeger & Arlo Guthrie, now reissued on CD by Rising Son Records.

It's also in Rise Up Singing just the one verse in English and Russian.

It's in this thread. This is the second time in 2 days I've done this one...what is the deal? Why does everybody all of a sudden want this song?

Because my friend from Denmark's son is 16 months, and my friend here became a grandmother last Sunday, and when all the little squeakers sing this it really does make people weep, even me. And the Mudcat operates according to cues even we don't control.

Thanks, everybody, especially Sorcha. {And selby (fascinating).} I ran a search on it and didn't find this thread; maybe I misspelled something? Anyhow, my further comments and Lyr Adds and Reqs will appear in the other thread.

Sad to say, when I met some Russians from perm in the Urals, and referred to this as the only Russian song I knew, they told me that for them it is so tainted with the oficial propaganda Soviet days that they cannot stand to hear it!!

Sad indeed. The whole concept of "peace" has a lot of political baggage all over the place, but for cryin' out loud, we need it. - Liland

Most Russians I know here in Seattle don't have any problem with the song. As we all know from the PC threads, some people are touchy about just about everything.

I sang the song when I was 3 with my sisters. The version we sang was

Sun in the sky,
Birds flying by
This is the picture you gave me
Far down below
Someone I know
Looked up as though he would say

There could be sun
For everyone
There could be worlds
Filled with laughter
Peace is a dream
How close it seems
When you hold my hand and say

May there always be Sunshine
May there always be blue sky
May there always be mama
May there always be me

Poost vsegda boodyet solntse

Poost vsegda boodyet nyeba

Poost vsegda boodyet mama

Poost vsegda boodoo ya

Click to play (chorus only)

The one I sang as a child was:

Sun in thy sky,
Birds flying by
This is the picture
you gave me
Far down below
Someone I know
looked up as though he would say

May there always be sunshine
May there alwayas be blue sky
May there always be mama
May there always be me

There could be Sun
For everyone
There could be worlds filled with laughter
Peace is a dream
Or so it seems
When you take my hand and you say

Chorus again (we sang engish and than russian on the chrous)

Anyone know of a Spanish translation? I am doing this song with my first graders and would like to be able to add other languages.
