That Long Canal

by Jean Ritchie

Come (D) listen to my story girls
For(A7)every word is(D) true
And please don't smile and turn your backs
For it (A7) may be concerning (D) you.
I was born and raised in the (C)State of New York,
In the (D) town of Alban(A7)y,
And my (D)heart was gay til that fatal day
They (A7)opened the Er-i-(D)ee.

chorus

And (D)oh, that day, that (C)lonesome day,
For(D)get it I never (A7) shall.
For he's (D)gone, he's gone, my love is gone,
(A7) Gone on the long ca(D)nal

.He told me that I was the fairest girl
In all of Albany Town.
And if he could get other work to do
Why, we'd marry and settle down.
Well, my love is good at most any trade,
So his choice is plain to see;
If it's got to be me or that long canal
He's chosen the Er-i-ee.

chorus

Yes, he said that we would married be
And with me he'd stay at home;
But he's got a sweetheart in Lockport Town,
Also Syracuse and Rome.
Young girls, don't heed the canaller's lies,
Though love undying he'll vow;
For it's with the dawn you will find him gone,
Gone on that long canal.
chorus

Where did you find this obscure one? It was written, as I recall, at a songwriting workshop "contest" at the old Berkeley Festival, one of the very early Big Festivals. And when I had finished it, and sung it (used the autoharp I think), Pete Seeger asked, "And what are you going to DO with this fine song?" Not much, I guess, except for publishing it in a book, for I had almost forgotten it and was surprised to see it crop up here! (NOTE: George and I had just been upstate on a sightseeing trip, visited some canals and the Canal Museum. Jean

Well, I have all your songbooks. This one is in Jean Ritchie: Celebration of Life, her songs...her poems, remember? I wish I was so prolific I couldn't recall all my published work!!!!!! I hope you don't mind my adding songs I can't find in the DT, kytrad. hg

Harpy, remember that the harvester finds related songs easier if they're all in the same thread. Just change the "subject" title for each message - no need to start a new thread.
