I am searching for a recording of Jean's song. Deep Shady Grove, and the lyrics. There is a country version available, but I am searching for one that is done with only Jean's voice and her dulcimer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Chance

Maeve the second one you note is the right song, but that was done much later with steel guitars, etc. Not bad, but I prefer the earlier acoustic version that I remember but can't find. I can get the lyric and melody from that later recording however, thanks!l

Chance- "Deep Shady Grove" is listed as Jean's song at http://www.allmusic.com/song/deep-shady-grove-mt0002111348

It's on her "Mountain Born" album.

Ha! I have it in Jean's songbook, "Celebration of Life". I'll transcribe it for you.

"Deep Shady Grove" by Floyd & Edna Ritchie Banks
(As found in "Jean Ritchie Celebration of Life; Her Songs...Her Poems")

A
I walked out one May morning
    D                            A
To hear the birds sing sweet.
                                 E                A
I seated myself in a deep shady grove
    E                                 A
To hear those true lovers meet.

To hear those true lovers meet, sweetheart,
            D                               A
And to hear what they might say;
                               E                   A
I wanted to know a piece of their mind
    E                      A
Before they went away.

Don't you remember about three years ago
With your arms around my waist?
You could make me believe by the false that you swore
That the sun rose up in the west,
That the sun rose up in the west, sweetheart,
And turned away to the east;
And now I've returned and found you here
And found you on your knees.

Well I never will believe what another woman says,
Let her hair be yellow, dark or brown,
Unless she be on some high gallows tree
And sayin' that she wants to come down.
And a-sayin' that she wants to come down, sweetheart,
For no one would like to be hung;
For the words of a young girl is hard to believe
That has lied to everyone.

Many thanks, Maeve!

Now if I could only find her recording with only her dulcimer accompaniment.

Cheers

Maeve, we have this recording but no lyrics. I really appreciate you posting those! There are more verses in the song - do you have the whole thing? There is a part right after "Before they went away" that starts with "Come set you down. Come set you down - come set you down upon the green...."

I've been wanting to transcribe this song myself because my partner and I really love it.

TIA if you do have the complete lyrics and can post again - I realize this is a thread from 2015!
