Subject: Nottingham, NH Mudcat Party
From: Bat Goddess
Date: 30 Apr 01 - 05:51 PM

Okay, it's time to make it official, though I've mentioned months ago to several Mudcatters to pencil it in on their calendars.

Curmudgeon and I have a mostly annual Tune It Or Die Music Party and Ladyslipper Festival every Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend -- and this year, that's Sunday, May 27th. The ladyslippers are in bloom, the blackflies are at least thinking about leaving, and we've got a fighting chance of the weather being good. (Unfortunately it was overcast and cool last year -- but whole summer was overcast, rainy and cool!)

The drill is to bring food, drinkables, voices, instruments, good spirits, etc. Folding chairs are useful. Our cats prefer you leave your dogs at home.

I'll post directions and more information as needed. We're on 33 acres of mostly trees in Nottingham, NH which is midway between Portsmouth and Concord on Rte. 4.

I am originally from the lovely city of Nottingham, England. On my USA trips I have often looked for ' American Nottingham's' but never found any. I'm so pleased to know there is one in NH. How about elsewhere?. You can bet if I ever get to NH at the right time I'll be over to your party. Have a good time. Burl

Okay -- would Monday, May 28th be better? We've traditionally done the Sunday of the long weekend so we'd have Monday to, ah, recover and clean up ('tho there usually isn't much of a mess -- just getting left over beer into the fridge, etc.) and feed whomever spent the night in the guestroom (singular) or on the floor. (Actually, there seems to be less of that the past few years -- less staying up to the wee hours.)

It's back to work on Tuesday (and Curmudgeon has to get up at 5 a.m.)

I'm open to suggestions -- and I'llhave to check with the locals (the rest of the Great Bay Company including Jeri, Angel Band, our, ah, "groupies" etc.).

Hey, Burl! When you're in the vicinity we make it a point to have a party!

Bill!

I just re-read Dan Milner's post on the Barry Finn thread, and I think you're thinking our party is the day before the TRADITIONAL Memorial Day date, not the "new" style celebrated date. Anywho, I believe you are being dragged (kicking and screaming?) to the Press Room in Portsmouth, NH to join us (Curmudgeon, Jeri, etc. and me) at the session Friday night on your way up to Brett's.

See you then!

Me mum is turning 75 that weekend, and I've promised her a weekend just the two of us. I don't think this is the kind of event she would truly love, but if we end early I might try to zip over to N'ham if it's Monday, as she lives in Concord!

Okay -- I still need input about what date to have the party -- Sunday, May 27th or Monday, May 28th.

I'm polling the rest of the gang at the session at The Press Room tonight and will keep you all posted.

Well, this gang member won't be polled because I feel like crap and stayed home. Either day is fine for me. Both days are also fine. In fact, when we get done at the shanty sing, we could all form up, convoy to your house and start there sometime on Sat night.

Sorry I've been away from the computer for a coupla days. Polled the crew Friday night at The Press Room and the preferred date is...

The envelope please...

Sunday, May 27th, starting at noon (unless the Portland Shanty Sing Convoy arrives earlier! what a concept!). We are conveniently located in the middle of the woods between Rte. 4 and Rte. 152 about midway between Portsmouth and Concord, NH. I'll post specific directions closer to party time.

The drill is bring voices, instruments, good spirits, food to share, drinkables, bug stuff (the blackflies just arrived yesterday), and a chair may be useful as well. (We've got chairs, but there never seems to be enough.) Mortimer, the cat about the place, prefers dogs be left at home. I don't know where we're going to stow the kittens for the day; they can't go outside cuz, oh it's a long story.

And the ladyslippers surrounded by star flowers and false lily of the valley should be in bloom. Hope the weather cooperates!

Jeri et al. If I make it to the shanty sing, can I join the convoy to Bat Goddesses? I will be flying back to NYC either Sunday PM or Monday AM depending on who can get me to an airport or a bus to an airport? PM me . I know I can fly into Portland but where will I fly out of? I believe I will have lemon bars with me. If it is not too hot, I'll make some bourbon balls but they don't hold up well in humidity.

Further to my earlier posting on this thread regarding 'any other Nottingham's' in America'. I've since heard that there is one somewhere in Pennsylvania, but surely there are others? Anybody know any places called Nottingham in the USA? And just to prove that this isn't entirely a thread creep - Bat Godess, I'll let you know when I'm next over there and I do hope it's at the right time for one of your gatherings. Best wishes, BURL.

Since I've been getting PMs about the party, it's probably time to revive this thread -- unfortunately I don't have the time right this minute to add anything. But if it's refreshed, I can update it maybe tomorrow (good lord willing and the creek don't rise).

By the way, counted 16 or 17 ladyslippers as I drove down the driveway last night.

Drat the luck, we're double-booked that weekend (well, actually that's a good thing, but you know what I mean). Sunday afternoon we're playing in Lisbon, NH, which puts us in your state, but farther away from you than if we were at home. Then we're playing in VT at 1:30 on Monday afternoon, so coming late and staying over isn't a very bright idea. Maybe next time.

Peter.

It's been quite a dance this week and I've been dancing as fast as I can. I just took some time out of my paying work to get directions of our place in Nottingham ready to PM to anyone who needs them (have gotten them to a few people already, and Naemanson already knows the way having been here at New Year's and Jeri lives about 4 miles around the corner).

Herfe's the short version of events again. May 27, Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend "Tune It or Die" Music Party and Ladyslipper Festival (18 at last count). Starts at noon. It's potluck and Sinsull's already told me what she's bringing. Don't know what Tom's going to be making yet. We'll have "starter" beer & soda, but it's a good idea to bring along what you want to drink. Bug stuff will come in handy. The blackflies arrived last Sunday. They'll probably be gone by the party -- chased away by the mosquitoes. Lawnchairs or something to sit on is also a good idea. Seems we never have enough seating. The guestroom bed and the couch are already booked, but there's room on the floor for sleeping bags and some room outside for tents. (We're in the middle of the woods on the side of a hill.)

The best things to bring are good spirits and voices and instruments if you feel you must. (Do I sound like a singer?) There should be some great music, not to mention conversation, food, etc.
PM me for directions!!!

Togas? Well, okay, but remember not to cut the strings off your bikinis or you'll lose your mittens.

Speaking of togas, Burl, did you get my info about the nudist colony in Nottingham, NH? Sorry, guys, it's not that close to our place. We're closer to the recycling center (oldest in the US).

Oh, and Kendall, you mentioned something about a level spot to park. Uh, we've got 33 acres -- on the side of a hill. I'm not sure the house is level. I know the driveway isn't!

Sure would be nice if we had a nifty little time portal between Nottingham and various Vermont locations, so you and your Mom and the Woodchucks could drift in for a sip and some music and still get to your gig or whatever on time. Where is modern technology when you need it anyway?!

As far as I know, no squid will be served at the party (see the eels in the refrigerator thread), but my world famous collection of rubber squid will be on display and postcards suitable for framing will be available (or not as the case may be).

Hey, Susan -- did you know I'm from Wisconsin originally? My great grandfather homesteaded the oldest farm in Clark County. One of the reasons I sing "Lovely Agnes" as well as "Tequila Sheila." (Maybe I'll have to sing you a coupla choruses over the phone til we can get together again!)

Yeah, I agree, you Vermonters seem to be sloughing off on this one. Guess that means we'll just have to do another gathering later in the summer -- hey! maybe the main deck will be rebuilt by then!

Looks like we'll have smoked trout pate at the party. The trout were fresh caught Wednesday morning and are in the freezer til the end of the week when Curmudgeon will smoke them (on the grill! on the grill!) and make them into pate. See the Eel/Refrigerator thread for the recipe.

It's not easy being a goddess -- especially to bats!

I have a lot on my plate this week (work, etc. -- how it interfers with music!) and in between I'm trying to tame both the interior and exterior of the house in preparation for the party. The bats aren't helping, but then again, they're not hindering either. Haven't seen or heard from them lately. (That happens the first week in July when the adolescent Little Brown Bats go out on their own for the first time -- and get lost.)

I usually end up apologising for the state of the house. This time it looks like I'll have to apologise for the state of the flower beds!

A vampire bat returned to the cave covered with fresh blood, and all the other bats flocked around him and demanded to know where he found the blood. Reluctantly, he told them, "Come with me." they flew through the forest for a ways, then finally, he landed on a big boulder. The other bats mobbed him, demanding to know the source of the blood. Finally, he said, "You all see that big oak tree over there?" they answered, "Yes, yes" and the old bat said "I didn't."

Sinsull, the bats will be ABOVE you -- in between the ceiling and the roof. You may hear them coming home (with hobnailed boots and talking to each other about the night's adventures) around dawn, but you probably won't see them or have them sharing the guest room with you. (In July the adolescents sometimes get lost and find themselves inside the house -- and sometimes need assistance getting outside again. Sigh. I plugged up their entry just below the roof's peak on the front side of the house, but the ladder doesn't reach in the back.)

Besides, the bats in the pants were in my employ (I paid them off in mosquitoes) -- I was trying to encourage what seemed like a permanent lodger (again!) to find an apartment. (Gee. Now you know why I don't have kids!)

I feel very privileged to have a nursery colony of Little Brown Bats, but I would like to encourage them into the bat house rather than continuing to set up housekeeping (and nursery facilities) in the space between the roof and the ceiling of the second floor. (Sorry, Kendall -- no attic, which complicates things.) We have to wait (again) until they leave in August or September before we again try to stop up their access.

Hey Jeri, if I recall correctly, you personally have never had a bat experience in our guestroom and you've spent a lot of time over the years living in it! (And you never left your pants on the floor, either!)
Okay, guys, you have to come to the party to hear the rest of the bat in the pants story. (And the banjo player who experienced it will be there!)

No fear of bats here. My sister-in-law has one occasionally in her house. Would prefer not to have one in my pants but that applies to a variety of species - let's see what Spaw makes of that comment. See you Sunday!!!!

I just brought up the bats-in-pants thing because...well, I can't remember laughing quite so hysterically in a long time. (I was on the phone to BG when it happened. She calmly stated "X just said there was a bat in his pants." I lost it.)

I think there needs to be a tune called "The Bat in the Banjo Players Pants" or something.

I never personally had a bat experience, but I moved out before they moved in for the summer. I did have the opportunity to shoot at flying squirrels with rubber bands, though.

Chowdah sounds grand!

Right this minute I(having absoutely nothing to do with chowder) I'm trying to catch my 2 feral and painfully shy year old kittens in an attempt to get them to their date with the vet and spayings (and, incidently, be boarded over the weekend so they won't escape during the party). Creamsicle actually came up on the bed within 6 inches of my hand before bouncing off and hiding. They like to play in the cat carrier and I'm trying to catch one or both inside, preferably Creamsicle. Banjo I can probably catch later, since she'll actually let me pet her (at least when she's on the bed). AND I have to get a couple files to the printer in Portsmouth, add copy that the client can't seem to find time to get to me despite the deadline, etcet etcet. Oh, and a few other errands before connecting with Curmudgeon so we can go to the session at The Press Room in one car. (Deep breath.)

Everything will be just fine. Everything will be just fine. Everything will be just fine.

Looking forward to the chowdah, Kendall!

Gives a whole new meaning to "Bats in the Belfry", doesn't it. Cookies are baked, bourbon balls rolled. I am all set. Can I feed the squirrels instead of shooting them with rubberbands? Just how old are those dead hens, Kendall? I think I would prefer fish chowder too as long as you don't leave the heads in it -that goes for the hens too.

The squirrels are flying squirrels who are sometimes in the walls and ceiling of the dormer. They pushed out one of the trim pieces in the guestroom (you'l understand when you see it) and occasionally pop their heads out and stare at the occupant of the bed. At least, that's what Jeri tells me, though I've never actually seen it myself (despite sleeping in that room occasionally to escape snoring). I think when Curmudgeon cuts down the trees in the southwest corner of the house (outside the house, not inside!!!), the flying squirrels won't be able to get in and drive us quietly crazy. (Well, not so quietly crazy.)

Calliope, the great huntress (feline), looooved flying squirrels, but she'd leave the tails. I hope they're not an endangered species, cuz they're pretty endangered as long as they're in this house!!!

Job to printer, porta-potty delivered, kittens still not captured.

Everything will be just fine. Everything will be just fine. Everything will be just fine.

SINSULL, I don't know that they still have the squirrels inside, but I didn't bother them too much unless they stared at me. There was something annoying about having a squirrel sitting on a rafter staring at me while I was trying to read. I only hit a couple of them.

"Hi," said the flying squirrel sitting on a beam
"I'm not as dumb as I first seem
I'll sit up here and watch you read
And chew upon this little seed."

"Hi," said the other squirrel in the window
"I'm cold from looking for food out in snow
I'm back again for another year
I'll make my nest and have babies here."

"Hi," said the cat, "now I've had lunch
There were some bits I didn't munch
Little presents that weren't too sweet
For you to step on in your bare feet."

Actually, the flying squirrels leave during the summer -- they don't get along with the bats. So, what have we learned in school today? If it's winter, the noises in the ceiling are the flying squirrels. If it's summer, the noises are the bats. Unlike the cats, I don't have to feed any of them. (And the bats are quite useful at eating their weight in mosquitoes.)

Have I told you about the flamingoes and the rubber squid? (Maybe I just ought to leave well enough alone.)

I have some unusual ideas about home decoration. (Actually, my housecleaning philosophy is that if you've got enough cool stuff to look at, nobody notices the house is a mess. That concept and tarps work wonders.

It was great seeing Barry last night at the Press Room. He's in fine voice, though he claims to be out of practice. He's thinner, but looks fine. (Justine looks great as well -- and very relieved! It was quite an ordeal for both of them.)

The chairs are all in the house and dry -- as is the interior of the house. Not quite as much room as the great outdoors, but plenty of room for music and food and all. We'll have to trek up the driveway to admire the ladyslippers anyway.

The porta-potty is, of course, still outside and is still the preferred choice for that sort of thing as our poor composting toilet can't take the stress of parties.

Come on down!

At some point, SINSULL was yelled at by an irate squirrel in the window. (See 2nd verse I wrote above.)

Naemanson behaved himself with the bourbon balls, but now that I'm gone, anything could happen.

Kendall sang a Bob Coltman's Patrick Spencer, and a few folks wanted the words. Great music, great food, great party!

After Jeri wimped out last night, Naemanson, Kendall, Sinsull, Curmudgeon and I stayed up til about 1 a.m. talking, telling stories and jokes and singing. What a lovely party despite the rain which forced us to sit in each other's laps in the house rather than spreading out under umbrella'd tables in the (dreamed about) sun outside,

The ladyslippers liked the rain, I think.

Coffee sounds and smells almost finished and I know more people will be returning early for breakfast. As Ian Shoals would say, "I gotta go."

Naemanson and Sinsull off to catch Sinsull's appointed plane home from Portland Jetport; Jeri home to under-react and possibly nap -- or, more likely, to spend the rest of the day on-line, probably here at Mudcat. Kendall left a coupla hours ago, as did the Thomases who had an all-day drive back home to Ottawa.

What a wonderful gathering! It wasn't an all-Mudcat gathering, but it was the Mudcatters who had the most stamina. Wow! We'll be basking in the glow for quite awhile. Thanks to everyone who made it so grand!

Yup, we've got your chowder pot and will figure out how to get it back to you (maybe Naemanson can bring in home with him from The Press Room Friday). We also have a tuner (just claimed by Bruce), a bodhran (Brett? Yours?), a jacket, and Nunzilla that Sinsull forgot to take with her, so I'll mail it to her. Haven't found any other stray items yet, but haven't looked either.

I just polished off one of the salads washed down by root beer (carbohydrates! carbohydrates!) and cheese straws. Four hours of sleep really wasn't enough but I don't want to waste the day with a nap and besides, I don't nap well. Maybe I should just watch "Oversexed Rug Suckers From Mars" and veg out.

We had a great time. It was great to see old friends and make sdome new friends as well. Once they get home I'd like to hear from CET on his thoughts.

I was fading fast by midnight but almost managed to stick with it to the end. I counted it as training for Mystic in two weeks.

Thanks to Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon for opening their home and letting us in. Also, thanks to Bat Goddess for helping me pry the tin of bourbon balls out of Jeri's hands....

By the way, on Saturday I bought a cooler for this party. On Sunday morning I put about a dozen bottles of beer and three bottles of water into it. On the way I drank one of the bottles of water. Once we arrived I placed the cooler on the porch next to a washtub full of beer on ice. I kept taking beer out of that cooler all Sunday evening.

This is the tricky part. This morning I opened that cooler prior to loading it into the car. There were easily two dozen bottles of beer and several cans of soda in there! And the wash tub was still full. I know I saw people drinking beer, as well as other beverages, all night long. Somewhere along the line the cooler and the washtub were blessed and the beer kept multiplying. I now have more beer than I started with!

As I said, Great Party!

We are back. It is now 7.45 p.m. The trip back to the Great White North was mostly uneventful, powered by diesel and happy memories of two extraordinary gatherings at The China Sea Marine Trading Company in Portland and chez Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon.

The "mostly" refers to the rapid deterioration of the muffler on our VW Golf. It started getting loud somewhere in Maine. By the time we left Linn and Tom's place it was sounding like a Hercules transport plane. After disturbing the citizens of New Hampshire and Vermont on their Memorial Day Holiday the damned thing finally fell off on the bridge over Lake Champlain. We had visions of a State Trooper pulling us over and ordering us to "step out of the car, please". Luckily, we made Cornwall, Ontario before 5 p.m. and Speedy Muffler effected a muffler transplant for us.

What a joy this was. I'm still buzzing and am looking forward to my next music fix. I have never seen such a combination of friendship and musical skill. I hope to see as many as possible of you at the Old Songs Festival. Alas, it's too laste for Mystic this year, but God willing ...

Memories of the day:

* Curmudgeon, face twisted and gasping for breath as he laughs at some remark/joke/story/song...

* Too many musicians in a small space, a critical mass resulting in endless O'Carolan tunes, massed voices harmonizing on various choruses, ducking fiddle bows and swinging guitar and banjo necks.

* Food spread all over the kitchen, Captain Kendall's fish chowdah, beef curry, cakes, nuts, cheeses, pasta salads, stuffed bread, lemon squares and, of course, BOURBON BALLS!

* The quiet that falls over a room full of people during a quiet song, and the rush of sound as the chorus comes up.

Thanks again, Tom and Linn.

Unclaimed Bodhran, eh? We wonders if ye Bodhranist might yet linger lost amidst the aftermath; have ye checked the portapot, BG? They have been known to fall in. Can the hounds get a scent off of the jacket?

A banjo-picking Lawyer... now that surely sends the collywobbles down me back!

Memorial Weekend is pretty nutz here, and we did well to make the celebrated ChanteySing, and were abundantly blessed thereby.

As much as I would have loved to join the huddled masses in NH (State of my nativity and home of over 20 years by the way) Sounds like I might be way too domesticated by now to fully appreciate such a fling. Your descriptionn reminds me of days of cherished yore up in Crystal, NH in the rambling home / shop of dearly departed Friend and Mentor "Ken" Vinyard and Family. Does anyone out there remember him? I can hear his Martin guitar and tenor banjo yet; sweet musical memories.

Uncle Jaque,
Your domestication has come as a total shock to me. When first we met, I assumed you were a member of the local chapter of Hell's Angels. What next? Will Kendall become a staunch Bush Republican? Will the Pope convert to Judaism? Good to see you, Love. And thank you for your music.
Mary

Well, the guy showed up to retrieve the porta-potty about an hour ago. Didn't check for missing bodhranistas. Ah well...

Still haven't settled down to any work today, though I did deliver a job this morning. Still working off a warm glow from the party. Wish I'd taken notes. Can't remember half of the jokes, limericks, etc. not to mention songs I wanted to remember or even ask about later. Kendall, what was that limerick again? You know, that one. (I hope you know which one, cuz damned if I can remember; it was late, you know.) If anyone's interested, I'll post "The Adventures of the Rear Admiral and His Maid."

And then there's all the songs we didn't get to sing. Why can't we do this all week, anyway?

Too much fun!

BG, that's what I thought after the Yorkshire Gathering... so many wonderful Mudcatters, a weekend wasn't long enough to even talk as much as I'd have liked to with everyone, never mind all the music and songs that were there to be shared.

Here's to the next time!

So, any suggestions on when to hold the next one? (Please, before snow flies and with a fighting chance of being able to be outside as well!) Any Vermont input?

Again, thanks to everyone for making it such a glorious gathering!

Linn

This weekend, the weekend of Sables, Pirt et al at our Press Room session on Friday and up in Brunswick, ME on Saturday or next weekend, the weekend of my birthday?

Party, party, party (she says while taking a break from redesigning a menu and a catalog).

I think we really should do it again, maybe right after Labor Day.

Okay -- last post and chorus on this thread, but I feel the need to announce...

We found the owner of the bodhran!!! (And not a Mudcatter, either.)

Kendall will get his chowdah pot back tomorrow, the banjo player with the bat in his pants (only once! it's gone now!) gets his jacket back tonight.

Well, dang! How about one of these when I'm back in Vermont the first weekend in August? I hate to miss all the fun, and I could swell the ranks of Vermonters by one, at least...>br >br Turtle
