So I've been wondering... there's usually a circle or 2 in the fine print of cds divided into 4 sections... M, A, P, and L...

So what's it mean? And why are some tracks just P and A or whatever???

MAPL defines Canadian content for Canadian radio stations.

M = "music" composed by a Canadian

A = "artist" is Canadian

P = "production" was recorded in Canada

L - "lyrics" were written by a Canadian

To qualify as Canadian content, a song has to meet any two of the four criteria.

Thus, if I record a Gordon Lightfoot song, it qualifies because it'll be ML.

However, if Gordon records one of my songs at a studio in Boston, it will not be Canadian content because it's just A. But if Gordon recorded my song at a studio in Toronto, it would be Canadian content because it would be AP.

An exception, for anything recorded before 1970, a song only needs to meet one of the four criteria to qualify.

Hmmmm. Where do you find it, Clinton - on the CD itself? The codes I know of are three boxes, each of which contains the letters D or A, showing whether steps of the recording process are "digital" or "analog." But MAPL, I can't find.

The D and A designations are something else entirely.

D = digital

A = analog

DDD = digital media (CDs), digital mix, digital recording

DDA = digital media, digital mix, analog recording

DAA = digital media, analog mix, analog recording

Ah, now I see - Canadian stuff, eh? It doesn't seem to be universal, though. My Stan Rogers tribute album has it, but not the Stan Rogers recordings I cehcked. My Finest Kind albums don't have it, either. Neither do the Gordon Lightfoot CD's I cehcked.

Generally, you'll find the MAPL symbols on CDs that are destined for the Canadian market.

However, there is no obligation to put the symbol on the CD. Except for Canadian radio stations that need to meet a Canadian content quota, it's not particularly important.

Often they just forgot to do it.
