I've been working on this tune (original composition) for a while and it's gone through various metamorphoses for a while as I continue to re-work it. Still working on a flashy ending for it, so for now, the latest recorded version is a cop-out fade-out ending.

I give you all "The Mudcat Rag".
(Apologies to the "traddies" but it's an instrumental with no lyrics or vocals.)

You can find it here by scrolling down the page. It's in MP3 format and you'll need some sort of an MP3 player on your computer to download and play it.

I hope it's worthy for consideration should there ever be an "official" Mudcat theme song.

Now THAT is awesome! I can almost hear the phrase "and hang it all out at the Mudcat rag" Maybe I'll listen a lot and try to writ some simple "blues" style lyrics for it, if that is OK with you, JP? (not that instrumentals are bad, just that this one almost cries out for them)

Sorcha,
Glad you like it. For this one, let's leave it as an instrumental since that's the way I've always thought of this particular one. :-)
Perhaps you and I could work on another joint venture tune for Mudcat that would encompass both music, lyrics and a vocal performance? (PM to discuss.)

What I heard was great! Can't hear it all the way through though because my POS server keeps causing it to rebuffer, but boy do I love those first few seconds! **BG** ~;o)

Yes, JP, I love it (Took forever to download but that is my computer I guess) Slinky hammer-ons and pull-offs, I loved every moment of it. One question though, why did you capo up to A? You aren't one of rhese manually challenged players who can't do the stretches in G, are you ? (Only jesting, I would do the same) .

FAReffingOUT and a LOT more than "JUSTA"!! Put that puppy on a Mudcat CD, along with Rick Fielding's "Catspaw Rag" and a few others and we'd have a best-seller!!

LOVE IT!!

Sorry, I don't have an MP3 player. But if you want a theme song with words, I'm sure we could rewrite Love Shack!

Giac: right click the filename and download the file, then play ti. "Look, Ma! No rebufferring!"

~ Jande

JustaPicker! That is gorgeous!! Please no lyrics. It is really lovely just as it is!

Hey! No overdubbing, eh? Sheesh!

What are you using to record these, If I may ask? The quality is superb, especially for MP3s.

(And the Pickin' is terrific!) =`)

Thankyou for a treat!

Thanks all. I appreciate it.

A few months ago I was searching all over the internet (and I believe I even had a thread going here as well) for a nice vintage, small bodied Martin and having been to hell and back mentally in the quest (from zillions of dealers, E-Bay weasels, and even a few Japanese web sites - big vintage Martin market in Japan b.t.w.), the moment I decided to abandon the quest out of sheer frustration, "the guitar found me." I know Catpsaw had wanted to know how that quest had turned out, and in the end I picked up a lovely little 1947 Martin OOO-21 in really excellent shape and all original. I just had a set-up done on it last week, and it's really playing nice now. "Mudcat Rag" is my first semi-finished recording using this particular instrument and when I listen to it, I don't so much listen to the music, as I do to the tone -such is the guitar nerd in me :-) and while I'm extremely biased, I think it's a very sweet sounding guitar. Can't beat old, aged rosewood and adironack spruce for fingerpicking!

Yup, good pickin'. Solid, rhythmic and clean. And MOST important...you've used parts of traditional and contemporary themes to create something original. Keep up the good work and there'll be lots more to come.

Rick

yeah!!!! Ooooh, that sounded great. What the heck does "rebuffering", mean, anyway? It sure gets in the way, doesn't it? But what I heard was awesome. I could certainly hear the "Doc" influence. Sharon

Awwright, JP..............I ain't got room on my dancecard for anymore friggin' Mudcatters that I love to listen to. But I am going to have to make room for one more. Excellent recording. Could you tell me what kind of recording equipment you did that on. Also what kind of mic setup?

Wonderful piece of work. I am going to download more of it later.

Mick

Dear Mr. Fielding,

What is the meaning of your oxymoronic phrase: "you've used parts of traditional and contemporary themes to create something original"?

Thanks for the comments.

Mick, in answer to your question:

- Yamaha 8 channel digital mixing console
- recorded directly to D.A.T. in two track stereo
- using (2) AKG C1000 condensor mics, (1) overhead about a foot and a half from the guitar, aimed at about the 14th fret, and the other about 3 feet away, at waist level pointing towards sound hole of guitar; ambient sounds from second mic, mixed down underneath main mic just to ehance the "presence"
- Lexicon MPX100 Dual Channel effects processor, which added a touch of reverb in the mixdown - digital dump from D.A.T. into harddrive (via Sound Blaster Platinum Card with Live Drive), using Goldwave wave recording software
- Media Wizard, to convert to MP3 from 'wav' file

Actually Rick, your original comments hit the mark just fine. I have studied the styles of the old "legends" (i.e. Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Blake, Mississippi John Hurt, as well as the more contemporary players like Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Doc Watson, Duck Baker, Dave Bromberg, Pat Donahue, Chris Proctor, and others.) My "style" is sort of a mishmash of all of them when I'm working on original things. That seems to be when the various "influences" come out. (Hard to be objective when you listen to yourself, but I tend to hear a lot of John Hurt in the Mudcat Rag. I love MJH.)

Yet another person who is now capable of making feel utterly inadequate. Not only are you a damn fine 'picker' ( I can just about cope with the base line to "Albatross" ) but you can turn out tunes to make your feet itch!

Keep it up, More,more etc.

Justa, I can't tell if you're playing with or without a capo, hell I can't even tell ya what key it's in. I couldn't tell what meter it's in, and I don't care. All I lnow is I know what i like and what to ME sounds good, and your Mudcat Rag ranks right up there with the best of them!

I just had another thought.....Since the Mudcat brings together folks from all around the world, why can't we adopt the Disney song, 'It's A Small World Sfter All'? Don't throw that...I was only kidding....
