We have just acquired a skink to mind while it's owner is moving house. She's a lovely little thing, About 12" long inculding the tail. Pale grey underbelly. Dark grey on top with orange markings. Any advice?

Cheers

Half an hour at about gas mark 6 should be OK.

Nice with a Bernaise sauce.

Presumably their owner has a nice terrarium set up and has given you an ample supply of mealworms, or other live food. If the terrarium offers hiding places for the little guy, then all is well. (They really like to hide.)

They are mighty hard to catch when they get loose because they are able to move quite quickly. Skinks can also get into small crevaces where you wouldn't be able to get to. In short, don't let it get loose.

Well, yeah. I hadn't thought about that. There are skinks and then there are skinks. It depends upon what part of the world your skink is from. But while they may have differences in food preference, a well laid out and provisioned terrarium is really all you will need for your purposes.

What part of the world ??? African killer skink?? I was going to say, "Don't let the cat near it," but perhaps, "Don't let it near the cat" would be better. I kept some alligator lizards going on mealie worms for a while; should be a fairly simple operation.

I like skinks. They're not really a snake and not really a lizard. My sort of creature, confused and not very bright....

Good luck with it, hope it all turns out well, I never forget looking after the school hamster, which upped and died on us the day before we went back....

Here's a little thread "drift"...

Carl Hiaasen, an extroardinary Florida fiction writer and Miami Herald columnist has a recuring character in his semi-offbeat novels named "Skink". Seems Skink was the Governor of Florida until he split a bit at the seams and is now a swamp dwelling, cartel-busting, roadkill eating environmentalist anti-hero. Great reading.

Good luck with your lizard.
