Judging from what I read here, it seems that many Mudcatters rely on Mudcat for their exclusive view of the world.

Don't know where that impression came from Clarence old chum. I get 2 daily newpapers, watch BBC at six o'clock, Channel 4 at 7 oclock and catch the BBC again at nine oclock. I also look at Reuters website and listen to the Radio, but for the real gossip then it has to be the National Enquirer...

I rarely bother unless I hear someone passing comment on some event or read something here.

If I do wish to read a newspaper, I borrow my parent's copy of the Daily Telegraph (not my first choice, I prefer the Guardian). I also use TV, Radio and Internet resources.

'News Hour w/ Jim Lerherer' (PBS), sometimes 'All Things Consdidered' (NPR), 'Washington Week in Review' (PBS?), some panel news discussion shows on comercial stations, like the one with Gordon Peterson moderating (Can't remember the name), BBC World News, ABC World News Now (that's the late night news).

I mistrust the print media these days because the news cycle has become so short. Sometimes I read news that is no longer accurate because by the time the paper has arrived, things have drastically changed. I take news coming from commercial sources with a grain of salt because they all seem to have some sort of an axe to grind.

Radio: NPR. Television: CNN, and CNBC. Online: NY Times, Washington Post, etc. Print: The Hartford Courant, The New Republic, and TIME. I also read Dave Brown's "Daily Bleed" (an almanac with a wonderfully radical slant posted by the chap who has Recollection Books in Seattle. -- gives one information about "this day in history" that you won't find in your ordinary daily paper). Today I was even reading an editorial about Jeffords that appeared in the Burlington Free Press. When anyone in Washington does something as a genuine act of conscience, that's NEWS!

PRobably Mort, but who cares? It's funny though that several times things have made it onto the 'Cat just as the news is breaking and the links of various 'Catters who are close by the story can be much better than the major sources.

I do CNN and MSNBC, Dispatch Online, Post Online, and NPR. I also check the Weather Channel and ESPN online. Every few days I buy hard copy newspaper just to pick up on the extras. For a laugh and to track the idiocy factor I also warch some Fox News programming, which has been REALLY humorous the past few days thanks to Sen. Jeffords!

NPR, BBC World News, the Drudge Report FOR THE LINKS!, and I buy the local rag because they carry me and to see what the locals are doing to one another. I usually seek out the news in the place where it is happening, via the internet, so that gets pretty varied.

I do like the fact that Mudcatters seem to be on top of breaking news and that we share it with one another, so I quite often hear about something on the Mudcat, first. It's like sitting around the kitchen table with your best friends and saying, "Hey! Didja hear the news?"

I think this is an interesting thread. Not sure it was intended to be, but it could explain a lot about the beliefs and attitudes of Mudcatters. If one only reads newspapers, reads magazines, and watches television news shows that promote one political philosophy over another, it certainly could color one's political beliefs, I think.

I read the daily Arizona Republic which is owned by the Gannet chain. It use to be very conservative. It has moved more toward the middle since Gannet purchased the paper last year. It does have a pretty good balance of columnists: George Will, Bill Press, William Safire, Daniel Shorr and others.

For national television news, I listen to the Fox News Network, which , I believe, presents the most balanced reporting of the news. I also listen to cable shows featuring Geraldo Rivera (who I never agree with) and Chris Matthews (who I sometims do).

I watch on Sunday: Meet the Press, Fox News Sunday and Sam Donaldson and Cokie Roberts, and I'm partial to vanilla ice cream sodas.

I also listen to NPR radio and Rush Limbaugh.

I don't watch the telly, I don't buy a newspaper but do occasionally catch "Today" on Beeb4 radio (even here in Belgium) as I'm preparing for work.

However, it's amazing how quite often I hear the first news through the "Mudcat network". A recent example was the recent Selby rail crash. Several local 'Catters had posted threads before it hit the national news and it was of particular personal interest as Lady McMoo was nearby in Doncaster and travelling by train that morning.

I like to get my news from lots of different sources so I can wiegh it up and make up my own mind. In general I listen to the radio ( I like radio reporting on the BBC as that's where all the oppinionated journalists still seem to be and the reporting isn't all 'blanded' out ) watch both independant and BBC telly broadcasts and Sky News. As for papers, I don't bother much, just the London Evening Standard. If I'm interested in a particular piece, then I'll read, listen, watch, surf everything I can get hold of till I'm satisfied with the information.

I think the overall impression I get about 'Catters and their views, is that they seem to be ( on the whole ) very widely read and are able to argue, in a reasonable fashion, on a huge number of subjects. Hardly the minds of narrow visioned people.

In no particular order,

CBC radio and TV, Goderich Signal-Star, Toronto Star, Mudcat Cafe, Mandolin Cafe, Social Edge Ezine, Straight Goods, Failure Magazine, Utne Reader, Sojourners Magazine, and various shared sources like the Canadian Auto Workers mailings and site, and articles sent around between friends and family. May also include various periodicals, magazines, bulletins, newsletters and the like. The church pulpit.

There isn't enough time in the day to stay fully informed about those things which interest me, those things which I haven't yet had time to explore, and general news of the day.

Who's got time to sleep when there's so much to know?

Errrr, anywhere I can! Seeing as I don't understand most of the news in Russian, due to a lack of understanding of most of the language (I'm trying, honest I am), I DO get a surprising amount of news from the Mudcat! Oops. I just mentioned Rush Limbaugh in another thread. No reflection on you Doug R. I've seen your posts for over a year, so I know you must listen to him for entertainment and not news.

By the way, has anybody noticed that he NEVER, NEVER, NEVER admits to having said anything innacurate, or even ambiguous, when a caller informs him about it? Time and again (yah, I listen to him too) he insists that the listener completely misinterpreted his remarks. This happens SO often that it really DOES make me wonder what he must think of his audience's IQ. Occasionally he apologizes for getting a date or a number wrong, but it's NEVER on the same day, and always initiated by him. He claims he never has guests or political debates on his show because HE can carry the whole load quite nicely, and he makes for a tremendously articulate guest when interviewed by someone like Tim Russert, but truthfully he'd be torn to shreds by any well-informed debator. No point arguing THAT though, because he'll never allow it to happen.

Funny thing though, Gov. Jesse Ventura, who should be afraid of debate, isn't. He has made fools of some pretty experienced politicos, simply by telling the truth (about both sides) as he sees it.

I listen to National Public Radio most days: Morning Edition, Weekend Edition, and the BBC News Hour.

If I am home in the early evening, I catch the news with Peter Jennings while cooking dinner or doing yoga; if not I might catch the local news later on at night...unless it has been a rough day, so I watch a Simpsons reeun instead.

I read newspapers on line (Boston Globe, The Guardian, etc.) but also occasionally grab a paper; I like to get the NY Times occasionally, especially the days when there is an added bonus section I like (Science Times, or Dining In).

Local radio. I find it's relevant, fairly accurate, up to date and the newsreader's got a lovely voice. Other than that Mudcat is pretty good and generally avoids politics which is GOOD.

I read the local daily and watch the CNN channels for general disinfotainment ... so I can see what most people consider news. Depending on what's going on on C-Span, I may watch that. From there, I have several websites I check almost daily. These include TomPaine.com, antiwar.com, IndyMedia, and the sites of Mother Jones, and Z magazine. There are a couple of sites that compile the sites of other sources. Foreign Synthesis, for instance, links with the major papers of dozens of countries 'round the world ... helps me keep my French and Russian reading skills up to speed, also. I read half a dozen or so magazines a month, these could include Covert Action Quarterly, Extra!, or The Progressive. And I read books ... Chomsky's a big fave. Ralph Nader recently gave me his most recent book on corporate lawyers. Right now, I'm reading 'Day of Deceit', by Rbt. Stinnett, on FDR's foreknowledge of the Pearl Harbor attack. When I'm not playing music (my regular job), I'm an information junkie. Rick

Primarily from CBC Radio, although, on occasion, I will research, for further depth of coverage, various sites on the net, in order to substantiate the veracity to my satisfaction.

Usually this results in my continued skepticism regarding a lot of issues. Late night CBC is interesting because it has broadcasts from the BBC and other European and Australian public stations and you get a cross section of stories and news and issues that never get reported in North America.

I prefer radio, as it allows me freedom to do other things, while still getting the information.

I typically sit down to the computer and scan the Reuters headlines, read the stroies that interest me. Next I scan Drudge and again follow the stories that interest me. I keep tabs on the Portrait of America polls and I watch the PBS News Hour daily. I don't read the news papers anymore, except for maybe sports. I occasionally watch network and local news too.

Drudge Report, Oregonian and Columbian..I too love watching Cokie Roberts..don't know why...she is irreverant or something...I can't listen to NPR...something about what seems to be a majority of their voices hurts my ears...they must be selecting for something other than melodious voices...except for the wonderful Fiona Ritchie who I could listen to forever. mg

Good to see so many fans of the BBC.
For me it's BBC R4, the Guardian and New Statesman as "must haves" and just about any other print medium if I find it lying around (with the exception of the Daily Mail. that always makes me so bloody angry I end up wishing I'd wiped my arse with it instead. And to think I once worked there. The shame....)
Television news in the UK seems to be tabloid-inspired crap, with the exception of Channel 4 (which is on too early for me) or Newsnight (and I'm usually out by then).
Online, I look at the Evening Standard most days (which saves me wasting 30p on buying it) the BBC and the LA Times every once in a while.
