Subject: St. Thomas Ontario From: TishA Date: 28 May 01 - 06:30 PM Anyone live there? My daughter and that boy live there. At least for now. They are planning on moving here to North georgia in late summer. My question is: Does anyone know of any place near them where they can hear folk/old time music? My daughter was raised on it & she's announced that she wants to learn fiddle! That boy will just have to follow along. Any help in finding a venue near them would be appreciated. Thanks, Chip A. & Tish A. |
Subject: RE: St. Thomas Ontario From: black walnut Date: 28 May 01 - 08:13 PM Hmmm...thinking. I lived in London, Ont., a long time ago. London is the big city near St. Thomas. There's a lot of folk music in London. I'll see if I can hunt up any details from people I know. Meanwhile, make sure they know about the (absolutely free!) Home County Folk Festival in London in July. They'll find a lot of information there, for sure. ~black walnut |

Subject: RE: St. Thomas Ontario From: sian, west wales Date: 29 May 01 - 05:22 AM I, too, lived in London - many many moons ago. Too many to have any up-to-date info. In those days, I was a novice with the Forest City Morris and Sword ... but, again, I have no idea what's available now. There WAS a really good music store on ... Wellington? ... just above the main street (Dundas) and I would think that they would know what's happening. Again, assuming that it's still there. It was such a good shop, I hope that it's still thriving... sian |

Subject: RE: St. Thomas Ontario From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 29 May 01 - 04:51 PM There is still a Forest City Morris side, also a couple of others. In London there is a Folk CLub called the "Cukoos Nest" I believe, run by Alistair Brown, don't know where or when if you search for his name you should find a link. There are a couple of Folk Festivals down there too. If you search for the "Ontario Confederation of Folk Festivals" you should find something to get dates from. There is also a store, pretty much central downtown, which sells all sorts of Celtic stuff and has concerts upstairs on the second floor, it just cam to mind, the name of the store is "Studio Celtia. Subject: RE: St. Thomas Ontario From: ddw Date: 29 May 01 - 07:17 PM I'm another ex-Londoner (sort of — I went to U. of Western Ont. briefly) and I too haven't kept up with what's going on in the area, but I have a couple of generic suggestions. SianWW's suggestion of checking with local music stores is a good one, but she should also check out the UWO campus and the local community college (Fanshawe?) to see if there are any folk clubs on campus. Also check out any free-standing folk or bluegrass clubs. If your daughter has transportation, she might also check out the scene in Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo and Windsor — all within an hour or two's drive. I'm in Windsor now and we have a number of bars and clubs in the city and surrounding Essex County where the music is available. I'm involved with the local folk society and there is a similar group in Leamington (about 35 miles SE of here) and the Essex Country Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association. If she's interested in travelling that far, send me a PM and I'll chase down some contact info on the latter two organizations for you. cheers, david |
Subject: RE: St. Thomas Ontario From: GUEST,Rana Date: 30 May 01 - 12:13 AM Ian Davies now runs the Cuckoos Nest - Chaucer's on Sunday's (probably takes a break over summer. He is also running other concerts. Details can be found on Northern Journey Online Home Counties is a good festival in July. However, Goderich isn't too far for a great celtic festival the weekend after the August long weekend, also Millrace is in Cambridge, Ontario and that is a good festival, too (Saturday of the August Long weekend. Alistair Brown has (or did) a good folk show on Saturday mornings on one of the London stations. London Morris Ale is on weekend of June 9. Trust this helps. Rana |
