"Shady Grove", without digging into the archives, does not ring a bell with me as being a CW period piece; I do associate it with an old English ballad that was revived during the 1960s Folk resugence, and if in fact it did predate 1860 there is no reason to conclude that it was not heard, as many of the old relics from the Colonial days were still in fairly common use in the mid 19th Century and beyond, especially in the South. When Historians went into the rural backwaters of Appalachia in the 1930s to collect folk lore and music, they apparantly picked up quite a few songs which had evolved surprisingly little over some 300 years.

You might check one ACW Music site I use: Kathie Watson Poetry and Music of the WBTS - http://users.erols.com/kfraser/

Or look up "Grove" on the DT Database here (I havn't yet) or:

Sorry I'm no Guru at HTML; you'll have to copy-paste the

se URLs to your browser.

for more on Civil War Music, click on my "name" (Uncle Jaque) for a list of all the threads I've posted on, several of which deal with the subject, or on "Irish Seargent", also a Reenactor Musician. You might also try a search here, as it comes up fairly frequently.

I had a CW Music forum up on Delphi, but I cannot get into it any more myself, so don't know what is going on with it.

Are you new to the ACW Music scene, or been doing it for a while? Either way, get registered on Mudcat and you will find yourself in pretty good company! "Uncle Jaque", Musician 3rd Maine Volunteer Infantry Regimental Field Music

Dear Unkle Jaque, I am a reenactor from the 14th IN Inf /civilian side(in other words, I drag the kids and the tent along wherever my 2nd sgt. goes). I have taught myself dulcimer and go to a large gathering weekly in the summer in Lafayette, IN. We play lots of folk tunes and I am not always sure what is authentic ACW and what isn't. I found a group of people at an event who love to play banjo, violin, and sing minstrel, folk, sacred shaped note music. I am up and running but not sure where I am going. I like minstrel tunes, but do not want to sing the lyrics to many of them. and I know that the ggg grandmother that I use as my persona for events was a strict Baptist and her family left Ky for In to get away from slavery. She would probably not have approved of minstrel music. Mudcat has helped me find some lyrics but I would appreciate some ideas for other sources of tunes that would have been in use at the time. My hubby found an 1848 Ohio hymnal in bad cover shape last year with a note--" could be used to decoupage a box or something else"--I nearly had a cow. He paid $9 ransom for it and raced home to show it to me.
