Okay, I searched the DT, the forum, and Google, and couldn't find the lyrics to this song by Gordon Bok. Can anybody here spot me them? I'd like to add this to my repertoire. (Does he have a lovely voice, or what?!)

Alex

Thanks, MMario! Alas, it looks like he changed the words. I don't remember Gordon singing anything about Carol King.

Alex,

"Little Road and a Stone to Roll," that Gordon Bok sings, was written by John Stewart.

In a version on one of his live albums, John sings the verse about Carole King.

Oh. Thanks, Tedham, for the info.

It's one of those "the first version you heard" things, I'm sure. The first version I heard was the Bok version, so that's the one I like the best.

We got the album about the same time we got our first rat--such a sweetheart that we went around singing,"Everybody needs a rat to hold."

The best! Always get two, though--we had one at a time for three rats in a row, and last time got a pair of females, Olivia and Bianca, and the difference in social interaction is amazing. They are much, much happier than the others were, though they do quarrel a bit--my daughter complains that the squeaking and scuffling wakes her up at night. But it's worth it for happy rats. Last Halloween I dressed as the Pied Piper and took them trick-or-treating. They were the hit of the neighborhood!

As for the song, it was only that one line. I suppose I could think about it and get more creative.

I used to take mine on a leash to the park (well, ferret harness, actually). I WAS the pied piper! The mothers would all stand in a 20 foot radius and yell, "I'll be right here when you're done!" -- the kids of course were right there, all over me, asking to hold her and pet her and such. Great conversation starter for a lonely or shy person who likes kids!

Copied from http://theassociation.hypermart.net/lyrics/littleroadandastonetoroll.html

LITTLE ROAD AND A STONE TO ROLL
(John Stewart)

CHORUS: Little road and a stone to roll
Little road and a stone to roll
Little road and a stone to roll
Ev'ry body needs a stone to roll

Ev'ry body needs a fire inside
Ev'ry body needs a dream to ride
Ev'ry body with a growing soul
Ev'ry body needs a stone to roll. CHORUS.

Ev'ry body needs some old loose shoes
And we could all use a little good news
Ev'ry body with a sheet to fold
Ev'ry body needs a stone to roll

Ev'ry body needs a Carol King tune
Ev'ry body needs a little more room
'Cause ev'ry body digs their own deep hole
Ev'ry body needs a stone to roll. CHORUS

[Recorded by John Stewart on "Lonesome Picker Rides Again," 1971; The Association on "Waterbeds in Trinidad!" 1972; Gordon Bok on "Return to the Land," 1991, and by Tommy Makem on "Live at the Irish Pavilion," 1993.]
