Been hitting a lot of HARD TRAVELING lately? Been RAMBLING AROUND and feeling just like a DEPORTEE? Have you been GOING DOWN THE ROAD FEELING BAD? Has that CURLY HEADED BABY told you SO LONG, IT'S BEEN GOOD TO KNOW YOU? Then you should be TAKING IT EASY, TAKING IT SLOW. Just grab your WOMAN AT HOME in those OKLAHOMA HILLS, hitch a ride on that SHIP IN THE SKY, and take her straight way to NEW YORK TOWN where you will both find the...

WOODY GUTHRIE BIRTHDAY BASH ROUND ROBIN SONGFEST

Sunday, July 15, 2001 € 7:00 to 9:00 PM
CB's 313 Gallery
313 Bowery € New York City

Featuring:

Richard Fried
Joel Landy
Jessica Feinbloom
Carlos Rosello
Steve Suffet

Since we first announced this event, one of our featured performers, Erica Smith, had to drop out. But the show will go on. We will have several special guest artists , and if we see enough friendly faces in the audience we will call upon them -- which means you -- to sing along on the choruses and refrains. The opening number is going to be "Going Down The Road Feeling Bad" and the closing will be "This Train Is Bound for Glory," both done ensemble style and both in the key of D major. So if you have a harmonica (D if you play straight harp, G if you play cross harp), a kazoo, or a Jew's harp, be sure to bring it so you can whip it out at the appropriate moment and play along.

$5 cover lets you stay all night and hear other acts as well. CB's 313 Gallery is a night club and not a church basement coffee house, so you are expected to buy drinks. And yes, the celebration is one day late. Woody was born in Okemah, Oklahoma, on July 14, 1912.

For info or directions: (212) 677-0455.

Nice to see you posting and pushing your event here, Steve! The most effective way to post something like this would probably include the location (NYC) in the title of the thread.

Remember, you promised me you'd come down and do the Mudcat Radio Show sometime... I'm still waiting...

Mary,

I've been very busy with my day job and with several other activities, but I'll make it down to PA one Tuesday evening. It's only about 90 miles away, and maybe I'll just head directly to work the next morning. The good thing about my job is that I'm a "field supervisor," meaning I pretty much set my own hours as long as they are within reason and as long as I put in 7h50m per work day.

Did you know I supervise one of the Johnson Girls? She's one of my best workers.

Thanks for advice on NYC in heading.

The Woody Guthrie Birthday bash is a great idea! I hope that somebody will be recording it!

Hi Jan!

I wrote you another song, and if you come to the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash on 7/15/01 I might even sing it for you.

To be sung to the tune of RED WING by Thurland & Chattaway(?). Tune used by Woody Guthrie for UNION MAID.

New words by Stephen L. Suffet © 2001

In the town that they call Fort Lee,
In the State of New Jersey,
Lived a pretty lass with an old guitar,
She played in every pub and bar. When she played a country song, The barflies sang along, But then one night I tried to lure, That pretty lass to the New York shore.

Chorus:
Oh, will she come across to New York,
Across to New York, across to New York?
Oh, will she come across to New York,
To the Guthrie Birthday Bash?

Will she climb that Pallisade ridge,
And cross that Washington Bridge?
Or slide on down to Hoboken,
And use her last PATH train token?
Or maybe this sweet hon'll,
Take the Lincoln Tunnel,
Or if her bank roll's wearing thin,
Maybe she'll just swim!

[Repeat chorus.]

When she climbs out of the river,
A towel I will give 'er,
And when she's safely on dry land,
I'll put a guitar in her hand.
Then we'll sing and play duet,
In the sweetest harmony yet,
And if she has five bucks in cash,
She'll be at the Birthday Bash.

[Repeat chorus.]

Credit correction: "Red Wing" is by Thurland Chattaway & Kerry Mills, not by Thurland & Chattaway as I wrote above. It was first published in 1907. Woody Guthrie most likely had a bawdy parody of "Red Wing" in mind, rather than the original song, when he wrote "Union Maid."

It's July 4th, and by now many of you have already sung "The Cuckoo" a dozen times today. So here are some alternative lyrics:

Oh, the pigeon,
Is a city bird,
And she poo-poos,
As she flies.
And she drops those,
Birdy turdies,
From way up,
In the sky.

So what does this have to do with the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash? Precious little! Except it's my way of keeping this thread refreshed.

See y'all at CB's 313 Gallery on Sunday, 7/15/01, from 7 to 9 PM. That at 313 Bowery, New York City.

It's July 7th, and that means it's my brother Fred's birthday. He's 63 today. Happy birthday! Which reminds me, July 14th is Woody Guthrie's birthday, and July 15th is the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash Round Robin Songfest at CB's 313 Gallery in New York City. That's Sunday, 7/15/01, from 7 to 9 PM at 313 Bowery, between East 1st and East 2nd Streets. By subway youu would take the 6 train to Bleecker Street or the F train to 2nd Avenue.

The morning after report:

The Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash was a smashing success. The house was packed. Thank you, any of my fellow Mudcatters who showed up.

One of the surprise highlights of the evening was guest artist James Rubin singing uptempo punk-rock versions of "The Sinking of the Reuben James," "Slip Knot," and "All You Fascists Bound to Lose." I particularly wish to thank James along with our other guest artists: Fred Backus, Jimmy Rao, Gina Tlamsa, Eric Levine, and Mudcat regular Larry Otway, known in these here parts as InOBU.

Let's hear one big shout out for all of them, as well as for our featured performers: Jessica Feinbloom, Richard Fried, Joel Landy, and Carlos Rosello. Oh yeah, and for me, too. I'm generally a modest person, but I am not adverse to accepting appropriate recognition.

And a very special shout out to Carlos Vasquez, who came on board just a week earlier as our bass player. We all owe Carlos a really big THANK YOU!

That about wraps it up for now. Watch for this thread next year, and the year after, and God (or whoever) willing, the year after that.

Nope, I was mistaken. I cannot wrap this thread up until I mention that three of the guest artists -- Larry Otway, Gina Tlamsa, and Eric Levine -- are part of a wonderful group called Sorcha Dorcha. From the little I know of Irish Gaelic, the name is oxymoronic, meaning something like Bright Darkness. Anyway, Larry, Gina, and Eric first performed "Plane Wreck at Los Gatos Canyon" ("Deportees") like we have never heard it done before. On the second go-around of the round robin, they held the audience spellbound with "Amadou Diallo," Larry's original composition about the African immigrant who was gunned down in a hail of 41 police bullets as he stood in the vestibule of his own apartment building.

If Larry, Gina, and Eric are any indication of what the entire group is like, then Sorcha Dorcha is a band worth hearing again and again.

One last big "thank you" to Messers. Otway and Levine, and to Ms. Tlamsa. And now it really is time to wrap this thread up until Woody's birthday (a/k/a Universal Folksingers' Day) comes again.

Hey Guys!
What a night
It was a great delight to hear Steve Suffet... there is a voice behind the on line typing, and a really fine performer. Well, you all know Joel Landy, so what more can I say other than he was his usual great old self, but the real treasure who we have to hear more from was Jessica Feinbloom, who was, I believe on her first time out before the real world, and did a wonderful job, the audience loved her, we loved her and it was really a wonderful debut!
If you haven't caught James Ruben, DO, he reminded Gina and I of Billy Bragg and the Red All Stars.
Not to leave out any of the others, everyone really did a great job and it was not easy following ANY of em - but, the audience were a treat... singing Amadou to a packed house, that was SILENT, was a real treat (not silent after, I mean WHILE I was singing!)
ALl Kudos and praise to Brother Suffitt for putting together a truely memorable evening!
Larry on behalf of the band...

Larry,

Thank you for your kind words, especially your kind words regarding Jessica Feinbloom. Folks are going to hear a lot more of her in time to come. I must, however, note that the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash was not Jessica's first time out. She shared the bill with Anne Price, Frank Woerner, and myself at the Sun Music Company in New York City this past January. Guest artists that night included Henry Oelkers, Bob Malenky, and Alison Kelley. All in all, the lovely and talented Ms. Feinbloom was in some pretty snazzy company.

Wow, Larry. Many thanks for your review. It was a fun time for me after a lot of work and a case of nerves. (now over that issue) I think the audience had a really good time. They seemed happy and truly with us all. I don't think they would have minded if we continued. You and Gina are something else. Gina's flute and harmonies floated in so gently and beautifully. You used your experience and professional musical ability to add to just about everyone's performance. And, yes, I am so glad the audience listened and got to hear your song, AMADOU. It absolutely hit home. Well, we're all invited for next year's annual Woody's Birthday Celebration. Hope you'll be there as well as some of the folks who couldn't make it this year. Thanks again. Larry, we'll be glad to have you all. Until then, come on up to Natick, MA, and catch me at the New England Folk Festival on Saturday, April 20, 2002. I'll be leading an open Woody Guthrie Jam Session in the afternoon, and in the evening I'll be performing a mini-concert of Songs of the Road with the lovely and talented Valentine Doyle.

Meanwhile, I got my very first outright rejection today. It was from a club somewhere in New England, but I won't say which club or even which town. Now I've been put on hold for up to two years by some places before they finally booked me, and I'm still waiting to hear from the Postcrypt at Columbia University in New York, but I've never before been on the receiving end of a blunt sorry pal, we don't want you!

There has to be a first time for everything, so I guess I'll be singing the blues tonight. Sniff, sniff.

Featured performers include Eric Levine, Anne Price, Jessica Feinbloom, Joel Landy, and myself, Steve Suffet. Guest artists include Frank Woerner as well as others yet to be confirmed.

July 14, 2002, will be Woody's actual 90th birthday. See you then!

--- Steve
