Subject: www problems From: Tedham Porterhouse Date: 02 Jul 01 - 11:02 AM I'm finding that about half the web sites I'm trying to connect to today will not work. This includes some major sites like Google. Anybody else noticing such problems, or know if there's a problem with the web itself today. |
Subject: RE: www problems From: MMario Date: 02 Jul 01 - 11:05 AM I suspect the problem probably lie in the DNS server for you ISP - all my "marker" sites are coming up fine |

Subject: RE: www problems From: Tedham Porterhouse Date: 02 Jul 01 - 11:18 AM Thanks. It's funny, about half the sites I want are working fine: Mudcat, Yahoo, ckutfolk, etc. Others like Google, are not. |
Subject: RE: www problems From: mooman Date: 02 Jul 01 - 12:29 PM I'm no expert but this is how it was explained to me by one of our technicians. It could be a routing problem in the internet itself. Typically you pass through a whole web of connections to get to a particular site. If something along the route to a particular site is down or overloaded you may get a delay or no response at all. Sometimes an alternative route will be found round the obstacle, sometimes not. Maybe this could explain why you can access some sites and not others? I used to have a freeware programme that traced such routes but deleted it as it wouldn't work through our proxy server at work. Now we have direct ADSL connections I might reinstall it. mooman |
Subject: RE: www problems From: Willie-O Date: 02 Jul 01 - 12:52 PM One useful way to get around routing problems is the site www.safeweb.com. Just go to that site and type in the URL you are trying to access there, and it will be accessed via a diferent route than if you were going direct via your ISP. If you can get to Safeweb but not to the other site, then the problem is probably with the site itself. Other easy things to try, are clearing your browser cache and removing all proxy settings your browser is set to. (Depending on your ISP's use of same>. Call your ISP tech support for specific settings. They (we) spend most of their time solving peoples' "connect-can't-browse" issues. Usually pretty easy, as long as you have your Windows CD handy. Subject: RE: www problems From: Tedham Porterhouse Date: 02 Jul 01 - 01:59 PM Well, everything now seems to be working fine. Wierd, but I'm happy. |
Subject: RE: www problems From: Bill D Date: 02 Jul 01 - 09:17 PM and sometimes The Internet Traffic Report can give you some idea of what is happening. Routers go out now & then and create jams in certain areas. |

Subject: RE: www problems From: hesperis Date: 03 Jul 01 - 01:52 AM I heard that recently, a certain company's routers suddenly decided that they didn't know how to talk to their competitor's products... Pretty shabby business dealings. |
