As thought, Songcatcher is playing at art film houses. The nearest one to me is thirty miles away requiring quite an expense in transportation and tickets. Would you 'catter critters that go to see this film kindly post some of your personal thoughts and reviews on this film? It got a quite favorable review in our newspaper, but I wonder if the reviewer has the Appalachian traditional background that many of you kind folks have.

Thankee kindly 'catter critters!

And, for good measure, a review from Salon here. They don't seem to like it too much, though.

Thankee much MMario. About as I thought, a Hollywood version, but might be worth it.

Being from the Apps myself, I've always been quite aware of the patronizing attitude that most of the story and ballad collectors have toward us. They: the Great Saviors, we: the innocent Children. At least I have a healthy attitude about this and the sly, dry humor that we developed to protect ouselves against such attitudes. So I am forwarned for when ( or IF ) I go to see this movie.

Thanks again 'catter critters!

Thanks for this thread....it is playing at my "local" art theater, 50 miles away and over a bad mountain pass. Still, it closes Thurs. and I was girding myself for the trip....maybe I'll wait for the video.

Piercing review in Salon...one line alone enough to put me off the movie..."Watching is like seeing a dulcimer plunked down in an Ikea display."

Anyone know when/how I can buy the video? I'm sure it won't be shown in my area or available for rent.

Chip A.

Whoa! A dulcimer plunked down in an Ikea display! That is a right thought scary now! Still, I just might go to see Songcatcher. It might provide a good laff!

Reminds me of when white folks thought Dances with Wolves was so good. I liked it, but the thought that kept running through my red heart was 'So, yeah, okayyyyyyyy,' tell me something I don't know.

Chip A,

I've noted that videos/DVDs are coming out much sooner after the movie release tahn they used to. Especially if the movie doesn't recoup it's production costs during release. It will probablly (sp?) be out in 2 - 3 months.

The New York Times gave the music a positive review, but said the characters were parodies, and the plot fell apart. It does have Ms. McTeer in it, so it can't be all bad. A great idea for a movie, likes lots of them these days. Bad scriptwriters and no real producers....
yours, Peter T.

Just to keep things straight, the other five "Songcatcher" threads are linked on the page which Mario directed you to and makes this "Songcatcher 6."

Because I don't know which of the 10 threads someone may be tracing, I'm posting this on ALL of the "Songcatcher" threads.

Our good member annamil has a video store and I asked her to check on the " of the movie being available on videotape and as she always does, came through for us. Here is what she posted:

**********************************************************

I just called my dealer and he says it will be out Oct 23rd and I will pre-book it Oct 1st. You won't be able to buy it for awhile, but you will be able to rent it. I didn't know about this movie til I read this thread and I only read this thread because someone mentioned it in another thread. I can't wait to see it and more importantly, I can't wait to HEAR it.

I'm not sure how many I should order for the store as this is the first I've heard of it.

From what I heard and read here, it may be worth 10 threads ;-)

Love, Annamill

**********************************************************

So go bug your local videostore and tell them you want to rent "Songcatcher." And when you do.........Don't start another freakin' thread huh?
