A friend in Australia tells me there is a cinema film over there about FJ Child, called 'Songcatcher'. I've heard no news of it appearing here in Britain. Has anyone else?

It is not about Child; it is indirectly about Cecil Sharp, who collected songs in the Appalachians...

The title reminds me not of Olive Dame Campbell, but of Dorothy Scarborough; one of her books is A Song Catcher in Southern Mountains: American Folk Songs of British Ancestry (1937). Incidentally, C.J. Sharp's collecting expeditions in Appalachia are discussed fully in Michael Yates, "Cecil Sharp in America: Collecting in the Appalachians".

I haven't seen the film yet, but I've always wondered why everyone said it was about Olive Campbell, when the title seems to be drawn from Scarborough's book. I think Masato is correct. Campbell was important, Lord knows, because it was she who told Sharp that the old songs were still being sung in the Appalachians, the information that brought him to this country to collect. Maybe the title is just poetic license, and Campbell WAS the inspiration for the story, but the "Songcatcher" title would seem to be more than merely coincidental.

Sandy: The reason people mention Olive Campbell and Cecil Sharp is that their names are given in the credits (or whatever the proper word is) shown on the screen at the end, as inspirations for the film.

Well toad....in one or another of all these damn threads, we did discuss that the movie was indeed based mainly on Campbell although the title didn't. This is the reason that she and Sharp are mentioned. There is also a link in one of the threads to the Campbell site I believe and some discussion of the movie there as well as her life.

I looked at one or two of the other Songcatcher threads and saw that Charlie Baum mentioned Scarborough some time ago, also pointing out that the credits mention Campbell and Sharp. I reckon I'll have to chase the film down somewhere and see it. It already passed through the one theater in a town near ours, but I was too busy to get to it. Is it available now on video? I've never rented a movie, but I see there are several video rental stores around here. Jeez! Almost every little town seems to have at least one or two! Do you suppose there's that much demand? Whatever happened to curling up in the evening with a good book?

Because I don't know which of the 10 threads someone may be tracing, I'm posting this on ALL of the "Songcatcher" threads.

Our good member annamil has a video store and I asked her to check on the " of the movie being available on videotape and as she always does, came through for us. Here is what she posted:

I just called my dealer and he says it will be out Oct 23rd and I will pre-book it Oct 1st. You won't be able to buy it for awhile, but you will be able to rent it. I didn't know about this movie til I read this thread and I only read this thread because someone mentioned it in another thread. I can't wait to see it and more importantly, I can't wait to HEAR it.

I'm not sure how many I should order for the store as this is the first I've heard of it.

From what I heard and read here, it may be worth 10 threads ;-)

This is Songcatcher 10, still out here and unclosed so it is up to Songcatcher 10 to get out the message that the film is currently running on Cinemax.
