Tune Req: She Moved through the Fair

Greetings - I am trying to find the tablature for She Moved through the Fair. I have the words but I would love to get the written music in order to play it on the guitar. It is a beautiful tune and I have been searching the net to try to find the tab or chords for days now. If anyone there has any suggestions or knows the music, it would make me enormously happy. Thanks a lot

We do not have tabulature, but you can hear what it sounds like in the DT.

Hi Susan, I'm new to this site and I stumbled on your message while randomly poking around. I've found two similar but not identical versions. Both are in standard music notation, not tablature. One gives chords, and I'll work out my own chords for the other tonight or tomorrow. These are photocopied from songbooks and "it would be as much as my place is worth" to use the office fax for such a purpose so I'll have to (gasp!) SNAIL MAIL them to you. If you're interested, respond with a mailing address.

I have one, you're probably not going to like it, but I guess maybe I've earned the right. Before there was a Web, before there was an internet, there were such things as books. When I read your message I went (yes, on the internet) to the UCSD Library catalog, searched subject folk songs, got to folk songs, Irish, and wrote down a couple of call numbers. Going to the library was a wonderful excuse to get out of the office for an hour and a half (the Music Library and the Science and Engineering Library are in the same building so I could justify this). I find that sometimes low tech is still best. On the other hand, your request sure gets a lot more exposure here than on a 3x5 card. Best of Luck, Dan

Dan - I was answering, not asking. The Digital Tradition is located at this site - see the upper right hand corner - we have words for 7800 songs and tunes to over half of them. Search for any word or phrase in the song.

Can I suggest that you post another thread with a title like "Convert MIDI to TAB?" and ask for the locations of demo software which you can download and use to convert midi files to tablature. I know somewhere there was a discussion about this and someone will know straight away which programmes can do it.

There has also been a thread recently about ABC and MIDI conversions but I don't know if they mentioned TAB.

I have a midi file of She Moved Through the Fair, which I downloaded recently. I'll check out which site it was on and give you the address.

I just did a quick search of the forum topics, and the first posting in this thread mentions a sfotware program called Muse which converts MIDI to TAB.

Hi Susan, Please don't confuse me with that other dan.("such a thing as books".....what a jackass.)

It looks like Helen has given you the same sources that I would have for this tune. But if you dont have software to read MIDIs and convert them to tab you will have a problem. My personal favorite is "noteworthy composer." It is available for PC users at the ZDnet shareware archives.

The Chieftains have a great version of this tune on "the Long Black Veil" sung by Sinead O'Connor. But for a really unique version check out The tune "Sad Wedding Day" on Ashley MacIsaac's CD "Hi, how Are You Today."

Pluck one (1) note to get the right pitch for your voice, then sing it right through without touching the guitar again.

If there was ever a song that didn't need a guitar, this is it.

There is a version of this song on a CD by Joe Brown (Hitting the High Spots)sung by Sam Brown, pehaps an unusual combination for the traditional folk buff.
The guitar certainly helps this version and is certainly worth listening to.

I do so agree with Jack, and always sing it like that.

I really feel that hostile name-calling (eg "jackass") does not contribute anything to discussions here. There's too much unnecessary intolerance and hostility on Mudcat (I know that's not all there is).

Sheffield based singer Kate Green does a version on her excellent album "An Unkindness of Ravens" I played guitar on it - DADGAD - beautiful tune and falls under the fingers in that particular tuning.
