Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: curmudgeon Date: 25 Aug 05 - 08:43 PM Hey al, why did you pick such an archaic thread? If you want to keep up with whats going on here, drop into the SINSULL song circle threads or those about the monthly shanty/foebitter sessions at the Press Room (NH). And look for an upcoming thread on the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival - Tom |

Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: GUEST,Tyler Date: 27 Jul 01 - 10:00 AM I see what you mean Barry about the 'catters gathering. Looking forward to meeting some of the "names -to me -only". I'm just back from Irish week in the Catskills and in sleep depravation mode anyway so finally checked out the Boston singer's session on Wed. in Paddy Burke's Pub near North Station. Is it usually as good as that Barry? 'course having Roisin White there was a treat. Recommended tonic for all visiting insomniacs (did't start 'till close to 10). See ya at the Press Rm. Advance warning- hide when I try one of my newly learned Irish songs- more enthusiasm than melody some times! Tyler

Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Naemanson Date: 27 Jul 01 - 08:13 AM Oh Alison! And I got a message from Kendall saying he can't make it either. Barry, you need to put some real pressure on Mick to at least get him there! |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 26 Jul 01 - 05:59 PM Nope- I'm not going to make it after all! I forgot about a gig I have until 5, wouldn't make it to the Press Room until nearly closing iime. I'll see some of you next week at Champlain Valley! |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Naemanson Date: 26 Jul 01 - 11:02 AM Oh ho! So you are an "aspiring squire" now are you? That's good to know. We are coming up on a weekend of performances at the Maine Arts festival and I may need a squire to carry my heavy back pack plus any purchases I might need to make while there. I will also need someone to run and fetch liquid refreshment and various foodstuffs. Ah, I will be living the life of Riley! |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Charley Noble Date: 26 Jul 01 - 10:34 AM So it looks like another quiet evening at the Press Room this Friday...SLAM!BANG! As the doors fly off their hinges and Naemanson emerges through a cloud of sawdust and kicks the remaining splinters aside, followed by his aspiring squire laden down with 5-string banjo and concertinas! Tune in next week for the next installment of The Press Room Massacre or Shanty Shambles, brought to you by Old Spice high endurance underarm deodorant. |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Naemanson Date: 25 Jul 01 - 03:01 PM For your information they were kind to me at rehearsal last night. However, tonight we are opening with the song I was singing when I injured myself! Ooooohh Nooooo! |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Jeri Date: 25 Jul 01 - 10:08 AM Well, Roll & Go has a gig tonight. My guess is Charley won't be any kinder to Brett than the rest of us plan on being. Will report back. |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Charley Noble Date: 25 Jul 01 - 09:44 AM With friends like Barry, what's a poor apprentice shantyman to do, Brett? Maybe I'll just play some Celtic tunes on the banjo, while everyone is gargling their geritol.;-) |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Barry Finn Date: 24 Jul 01 - 09:11 PM Mick, if you see this, I work not all that far from Brockton (well, I'm a long distance driver so what do I know about time & milage) & could swing an early day, come grab you, get my wife & it's off to Portsmouth. The next day we'll be heading towards Cape Cod for our annual 100+ (I come from a long line of rabbits) family picnic, passing not to far from Brockton on the way there, so what's it gonna be, big boy?. Wuss warning, once you close the car door, it's non stop singing till the last man/woman drops & I hold a pretty mean record now with my new parts & all.
Sorry Naemanson, we take no prisoners (heh, heh), prepare to kill the throat or die. Either way we can have a good chuckle & go on to sing a lament over your loss. You can always opt for playing it safe & buy the rounds (yuck, yuck). Hey Kendall, what'd thunk bout coming? See you all, Barry

Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Naemanson Date: 24 Jul 01 - 06:04 PM To bad about Big Mick. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, except when practising the guitar. |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Jeri Date: 24 Jul 01 - 05:25 PM And I just got a call from Big Mick. He said Fri night depends on how things go, and there's a good chance he won't be able to get here. Barry, he now has your phone number. |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Naemanson Date: 24 Jul 01 - 03:16 PM I just got a call from bbc and Duane. They are in the area. They had a little car trouble but they are here and safe. The gathering has begun! |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Naemanson Date: 24 Jul 01 - 08:35 AM Oh please, have mercy on my poor strained throat. Ah, la belle sans merci, can you not find pity in your heart for one such as I? |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Barry Finn Date: 23 Jul 01 - 07:15 PM Ya, what Jeri said, FAT CHANCE. I haven't heard from Mick & same as you, I e-mailed 'em but aven't heard back yet. Barry |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Jul 01 - 05:25 PM Sorry, Brett, I really tried. Some folks don't have any mercy...;-( |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Jeri Date: 23 Jul 01 - 03:54 PM HAHAHAHAHA! Sorry Charley, but FAT CHANCE. (And I've finally spelled your name right!) I've messed up my voice before, but usually it's back to normal in less than a week if I just give it a rest. Naemanson, don't try singing soprano anymore! I sent Big Mick my phone number by e-mail, but I have no reason to believe he got the message. Barry, if you hear from him and still have my number, feel free to give it to him. (Or PM me if he's looking for it.) |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Jul 01 - 03:16 PM WARNING! Naemanson will not be leading any songs this Friday at the Press Room. He stressed out his vocal chords last Friday and we (Roll & Go) need his golden voice for our Chocolate Church concert on Saturday. Please, if you're a lover of traditional sea songs, don't tempt Brett to sing! Thanks! |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Naemanson Date: 23 Jul 01 - 02:45 PM WARNING! If you enter Portsmouth from Maine avoid the old bridge! It is closed most of this week including Friday! I heard this on the radio this morning. |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Naemanson Date: 22 Jul 01 - 03:07 PM Be careful on the road bbc! There are crazies out there! |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Jeri Date: 22 Jul 01 - 02:59 PM Charlie, I swiped the directions from Yahoo. If they were mine, they'd look something like "when you get off 95, turn right onto whatever that streed was, don't turn right at the orange blinking light. When you get to the stop sign and there's a road down sort of a hill on your left, go there..." I thought Yahoo was better. Still, it's best to look at a map, because I've found Yahoo messes up sometimes. Safe Journey, bbc. Will see you Fri! |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: bbc Date: 22 Jul 01 - 02:26 PM We're leaving home early tomorrow am & hope to see you folks soon. Brett & Kendall, we'll be in touch. bbc |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Jul 01 - 11:58 AM Jeri, "MARKET ST becomes MARKET ST. 0.7 miles"? Well, a rose is a rose is a rose, unless it is a pose.;-) |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Barry Finn Date: 22 Jul 01 - 09:17 AM John Nolan, are you reading this? Will you be coming too? It's been awhile. We still got to get you guys over here. Barry |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Bat Goddess Date: 21 Jul 01 - 10:03 AM It was the middle bridge (Rte. 1 By-pass) not the old Rte 1 bridge (State Street) that had the, uh, not alert bridge tender. Bat Goddess |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Charley Noble Date: 19 Jul 01 - 01:12 PM And if you're coming from Maine and plan to use the old Rt. 1 bridge and it's open, be sure to look twice before proceeding after the gate is raised! |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Big Mick Date: 19 Jul 01 - 10:44 AM Looks like I am in Brockton on Monday morning, so there is a good chance that I can make all or some of this on Friday, depending on my assignment. I sure hope so. It is looking better. |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Naemanson Date: 19 Jul 01 - 10:33 AM If you are planning to park just get to Portsmouth around noon and drive around until 4:00! |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Bat Goddess Date: 19 Jul 01 - 10:26 AM BTW, you can go around in circles looking for parking by making either left turns or right turns. Daniel St. South, right on Penhallow, right on Bow, right on Chapel , right again on Daniel Street. OR Daniel St. South, through Market Square, left on the alley between the church and Eagle Photo, through next cross street, left on State St. next to the old Custom House, State St. to just before the bridge to Maine, left over to Daniel St. south and start over again. Despite our political predilections, 'Mudge and I usually do the right hand turn loop. Bat Goddess |

Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: GUEST,emily b Date: 18 Jul 01 - 11:46 AM Bat Goddess, thank you for the directions and the time. I'm sure we can find this place. I can read a map and street signs and smell a good bar. See everyone is a week or so. Emily |
Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: GUEST,emily b Date: 18 Jul 01 - 11:40 AM It would be great to get directions but at least a city and street address. I'm assuming Portsmouth but may be wrong. I found a Press Room Restaurant at 77 Daniel St. Is this correct? I'm sure I could find it on my own but directions from I-95 would be appreciated. I'll be off of internet access by the morning of the 20th. Thanks and Bill and I look forward to meeting everyone. We don't have mudcat t-shirts so look out for strangers with a small guitar. Subject: RE: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27? From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Jul 01 - 11:36 AM Hey, prolly time to post directions to the Press Room on this thread. Everyone please be advised to get there between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. The session lasts until around 9 p.m. It's in the back of the room in a usually crowded pub and situated in between the kitchen and the waitresses who are trying valiantly to save everyone from dying of thirst. The address is 77 Daniel Street and it is located between the Piscataqua River (and the bridge to Maine) and Market Square, the heart of downtown. It's across the street from the Post Office/Federal Building. Daniel St. (which becomes Congress St. which becomes Islington St. in not too many blocks) is one way, as is State St. and Congress St. Parking either involves going around in circles for awhile looking for an available spot or taking a berth at the Parking Garage (3 blocks away). The phone number is 431-5186. Oh, Daniel St. is Rte 1 south and State St. is Rte 1 north, if that helps clarify anything. If anyone needs answers, ask questions! Ask questions! Bat Goddess |

Thanks for that info. bbc |
