Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fare Thee Well? / Farewell (Bob Dylan) From: Capt. Telemark Date: 12 Jan 21 - 05:19 AM The song is named "Farewell" on Dylan's and Collin's recordings. After writing the above, I was wondering if the times fit. I find this in an unimpeachable source, Wikipedia: "He first played it for friends in Greenwich Village after returning from a two-week trip to London in early January 1963." (There is a citation.) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Fare Thee Well? / Farewell (Bob Dylan) From: GUEST,Larry Date: 12 Jan 21 - 04:59 AM Allan McLeod told of singing Leaving (of) Liverpool as featured singer at a folk club in England. Bob Dylan came up and asked for the words afterwards, which Allan wrote out. My joke is that he wrote his own words to it because he couldn't read Allan's handwriting! (But Allan's handwriting is quite neat.) |
Subject: Lyr Add: FAREWELL (Bob Dylan) From: Jim Dixon Date: 06 Aug 03 - 12:00 AM Copied from http://www.bobdylan.com/songs/farewell.html FAREWELL (Bob Dylan) Oh it's fare thee well my darlin' true, I'm leavin' in the first hour of the morn. I'm bound off for the bay of Mexico Or maybe the coast of Californ. So it's fare thee well my own true love, We'll meet another day, another time. It ain't the leavin' That's a-grievin' me But my true love who's bound to stay behind. Oh the weather is against me and the wind blows hard And the rain she's a-turnin' into hail. I still might strike it lucky on a highway goin' west, Though I'm travelin' on a path beaten trail. So it's fare thee well my own true love, We'll meet another day, another time. It ain't the leavin' That's a-grievin' me But my true love who's bound to stay behind. I will write you a letter from time to time, As I'm ramblin' you can travel with me too. With my head, my heart and my hands, my love, I will send what I learn back home to you. So it's fare thee well my own true love, We'll meet another day, another time. It ain't the leavin' That's a-grievin' me But my true love who's bound to stay behind. I will tell you of the laughter and of troubles, Be them somebody else's or my own. With my hands in my pockets and my coat collar high, I will travel unnoticed and unknown. So it's fare thee well my own true love, We'll meet another day, another time. It ain't the leavin' That's a-grievin' me But my true love who's bound to stay behind. I've heard tell of a town where I might as well be bound, It's down around the old Mexican plains. They say that the people are all friendly there And all they ask of you is your name. So it's fare thee well my own true love, We'll meet another day, another time. It ain't the leavin' That's a-grievin' me But my true love who's bound to stay behind. Copyright © 1963; renewed 1991 Special Rider Music |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dylan's 'Fare Thee Well' From: GUEST,genie Date: 11 Aug 01 - 02:01 AM Thanks, everybody. I could remember about 60 percent of the lyrics, including, "The weather is against me and the wind blows hard, ... " but not the rest. I always liked the song, and it's good to have my memory refreshed. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dylan's 'Fare Thee Well' From: Mark Cohen Date: 09 Aug 01 - 04:50 AM Hey, the old brain cells can still do it, eh? Except for "The weather is against me and the wind blows hard". For some inexplicable reason, this song is in the DT as "Leaving Liverpool, new version". I had the devil of a time trying to find it. The original is not listed as "Leaving of Liverpool" but "Leaving Liverpool", so when I entered "Leaving of Liverpool" into the search box, nothing came up. When Dick and Susan and whoelseever continue their monumental and thankless task of updating and correcting the DT, this one should be given the correct title, "Farewell". And I think Max said the search engine was going to be improved to do "fuzzy" searches, which will help too. Not that I'm complaining!....I'm amazed at how comprehensive that collection is and how well the SuperSearch generally works. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: Lyr Add: FARE THEE WELL (from Judy Collins) From: Mark Cohen Date: 09 Aug 01 - 04:18 AM I only know the verses that Judy Collins sang, which are in The Judy Collins Songbook, which of course you all have. All my music books are packed away from my recent move. As best I can recall, they are: Oh fare thee well, my darlin' true I'm leavin' the first hour of the morn I'm bound off for the bay of Mexico Or maybe the coast of Californ' So fare thee well my own true love We'll meet another day, another time It's not the leavin' that's grievin' me But my true love who's bound to stay behind I'll tell you of the laughter and the troubles Be they somebody else's or my own With my hands in my pockets and my coat collar high I'll travel unnoticed and unknown [CHORUS] I can't remember the first line of this verse The rain is turnin' into hail I might strike it lucky on a highway goin' west But I'm travelin' a lonesome trail I've heard tell of a town where I might as well be bound Down around the Mexican plain They say that the people all are friendly there All they ask of you is your name [CHORUS] Hope that helps. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dylan's 'Fare Thee Well' From: pavane Date: 09 Aug 01 - 03:02 AM From memory, wasn't that his version of Leaving of Liverpool? With just the Liverpool left out. I have it at home, in the Bob Dylan Songbook, but will have to wait before I can post it. |
Subject: Dylan's 'Fare Thee Well' From: Genie Date: 09 Aug 01 - 01:45 AM Anyone know all the lyrics to "Fare Thee Well" by Bob Dylan? I can remember about half of them, including the chorus: So fare the well, my own true love. We'll meet another day, another time. It's not the leaving that's grieving me, But my true love who is bound to stay behind |
