the old thread was at 100 posts and loading slowly...so, here are Charlie Baums last two posts...

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2001-Which dates? From: Charlie Baum Date: 08-Aug-01 - 11:17 PM Shop: Well, The

No requirement to be a member, though members receive a discount, and you can join when you register.

Many people show up on Friday after leaving work; since people leave work in places from Virginia to Connecticut and beyond, arrival times may vary, but by 8:30 p.m. or so, there's always informal good music going on Friday night.

Well, the registration form is complete, but the FSGW website is an experimental exercise in changeability, as we're slowly instigating a new system that takes the burden off of the webmaster and allows committee chairs to update their info.

Try this link to see if it produces a Getaway registration form. I'll produce a formal Mudcat link later this week, along with the brochure information.

Yes! The above link works.

Now to join the FSGW, you'll also want to fill out a membership form, which can be had here.

The dates are., indeed, Friday, October 19 (we'll be there in the afternoon setting up to receive guests; if you're early, you can lend a hand) through Sunday, October 21, though actually it runs so late on Sunday night (into the wee hours) that you can stay overnight and join in the breakfast on Monday morning (with prior reservation). See the registration form.

One note: the registration formis in Acrobat format, so you can download Acrobat for free if you son;t already have it.

One caveat: if you go the www.fsgw.org site and look up the Getaway, any schedule information regarding meals or workshops posted at this point (early August) is entirely fictional and experimental, as we're still de-buggin g the grid system. By September, it should be more accurate.

Y'all come now!

Repeating what Charlie said on the previous thread, you don't have to be an FSGW member to come to the Getaway.

If you're bringing several people from one family, it will probably save money if you join FSGW anyway.

Lots of people show up during the day on Saturday if they have other commitments. Bob Zentz had a Saturday gig a couple of years ago. He arrived for the late Saturday singing, led a concertina workshop and gave a concert Sunday morning, then left by noon Sunday for his next gig... a real "drive-by performace" ... and added a WHOLE lot to our weekend... so you can see we're very flexible.

The registration form lets you specify pretty clearly how long you'll be here. Just one thing: If you change your mind and are coming earlier, let us know in time so we can have meals ordered for you!

Now for the program. PLEASE post to this thread if there are workshops and/or concerts you'd like to see in the program. If you have an idea for a workshop you might lead, PM me or post it here. (Fortunato and RiB have already posted, other folks have e-mailed me.) I can't always include every workshop that is suggested, but it helps so much to get people's input and offers of help.

More on this later, got to go now.

37th Annual Getaway

Friday, October 19 through Monday, October 22, 2001
Camp Ramblewood, Darlington, MD (near Havre de Grace)

What is the Getaway?

For nearly 37 years, FSGW has held its Getaway weekend so that members and friends can share music, stories, crafts and dance in a relaxed camp setting.

The Getaway is:

  • Music-making under the trees, on the lawn, by the pond, or by the pool;
  • Group singing and jamming at its best;
  • Informal workshops on singing, dancing, crafts and storytelling led by FSGW members and friends;
  • Trying a craft--quilting, basket-making, puppets, and mask-making have been highlights of past years;
  • Great food;
  • A terrific weekend for the whole family, with lots of special children's activities;
  • A chance to renew old friendships and make new ones;
  • A beautiful camp with modern facilities in scenic rolling hills adjacent to the Susquehanna River;
  • A wonderful chance for parents to introduce their kids to the magic of group singing and dancing--or to discover that magic for the first time themselves.

    Dates and Times

    This year's Getaway is scheduled at the height of Fall colors. Camp Ramblewood spreads out over rolling hillsides bordering the Susquehanna River just below the Conowingo Dam, north of Havre de Grace, Maryland. Camp Ramblewood is about 8 miles north of Exits 89 (Havre de Grace) or 93 (Port Deposit) of I-95. It's only 90 minutes North of the I-495 Beltway, in a direction far less subject to traffic jams than Virginia. It's only about 45 minutes South of the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

    You may choose to stay over either two or three nights, or you may come for the day if you are unable to get away for the whole weekend. Daytrippers are offered two meals, lunch and dinner each day. (But you must register in advance if you wish to dine!)

    The weekend starts Friday evening with a potluck dinner. If you register for two nights, your registration fee covers three wonderful meals and a midnight snack both days on Saturday and Sunday. Three-night registration gives you an additional night's lodging and breakfast on Monday morning.

    Facilities

    The dining hall, several common rooms, the pub, the drama barn, the dance barn (with a hardwood sprung floor), and the outdoor pavilion offer all-weather spaces for music making and dancing. NO SMOKING is allowed in any of the camp buildings.

    If you choose to go to bed, there are more than 50 rooms, mostly in modern cabins. They feature indoor flush plumbing and hot showers; comfortable beds with box-spring mattresses (bring your own linens and bedding). There are handicapped-accessible cabins with wheelchair-accessible bathrooms for those who need them; please indicate any special needs when you register. Cabins are not heated (bring warm clothes!). If you prefer to bring a tent or your own RV, you may do so, and camp on the grounds (no discounts, but you get guaranteed privacy!). If you don't want to sing, there's a pond with boats (and stocked with fish), tennis courts, ball fields, and a trail through the woods to the banks of the Susquehanna. The immediate area offers antiques, history and horse farms. (See more of Camp Ramblewood at it's website: www.ramblewood.com.)

    Volunteer Help

    We'll need volunteers to help set up on Friday, to welcome and register guests, to clean up after our Friday night potluck dinner, and to help make sure everything is in order when we check out.

    Fees

    Getaway fees depend on whether you're an FSGW member or not, and whether you're an adult or a child. See the registration form for the fee that applies to you. Fees are determined by our actual costs to run this event--food, camp rental, etc.

    Getaway Activities at a Glance

    Friday--
    • Register any time after 3 pm.
    • Potluck dinner, with new foods added as each person arrives.
    • Song swap and music-making into the wee hours.
      Saturday--
      • Informal music, dance, crafts and storytelling workshops all day.
      • Saturday night concert (sign up to tell a story, present a short skit, tune or song).
      • Singing and jamming together all night, as late as you care to stay (or stay up, if you're sleeping at camp).
        Sunday--
        • Informal music, dance, crafts and storytelling workshops all day
        • Sunday night concert (sign up if you didn't participate on Saturday).
        • More singing and jamming after the concert, into the wee hours.
          Monday--
          • Parting songs.
          • Farewell breakfast in the dining hall.

            To register, download this registration form (readable in Adobe Acrobat format), fill it out, and mail it to the address on the bottom of the form with your check(s) enclosed. A discount is available for FSGW members, and if you wish, you may join and get member rates, no matter where you live. (If there are two or more of you in a family, your membership will be amortized almost immediately!) The membership application form can be found here and printed out and sent in.

I was hoping to get over the pond for this year's Getaway and to meet US/Canadian Catters and have some great music but Lady McMoo's employer just went bust and money has now become somewhat of an issue for us. However, if things resolve quickly I might still register late.

Best regards,

I am so THERE!!

Ferrara, can we do scary/ghost songs after it gets dark? Maybe by the fire? Lani Herrmann caught me between shivers and tears of laughter "With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm" last year. There are so many real, old, grave-y ghost-y tunes....

Now that it actually seems real, my mind will be racing with possibilities.

I would like to see a few vocal warm up sessions. I am going to be doing a LOT of singing and some sessions to keep the voice limbered up would be a help.

Any chance somebody could lead a workshop on songs of the American Civil War(a.k.a war of Yankee agression?)

Are we allowed in the pool? (Semi-serious question. I was very tempted to jump in last year, but didn't know if I'd get yelled at.)

Workshop: "Songs to drive Bill D crazy." People are to go through their old pop albums and find songs they can sneakily disquise as folk songs. Of course, the "hits" might be instantly recognisable.

I LIKE Dani's idea! Maybe by a campfire?

Jeri--

Last year, they'd already closed up the pool, though we were able to use the deck area. I suspect that the pool will once again probably be closed by late October, unless we have a particularly warm autumn. Final answer may have to wait until the actual weekend, but I tend to doubt it will be warm enough.

Didn't a suggestion come up after last year's Getaway to have a "Singing in the Shower" workshop? :-)

I have even learned a new song for it. "Singing in the Bathtub" as performed by Eddie Walters, R. Crumb and others.

I hope to be there fully mobile (no crutches!) with my gutbucket, banjo ukes, and other stuff this year. I would love to help with a jam of jugband and comic/novelty songs of the 10s, 20s, and 30s (From the Georgia Yellowhammers, the Dallas String Band, and the Hokum Boys to Cliff Edwards, Frank Crumit, Billy Muray, Helen Kane, Annette Hanshaw, etc.) Modern stuff too if it fits the style. However, I don't know enough tunes to lead. Would anyone like to join me in this ???

BTW, Micca's coming, I think I'm picking him up at the airport and driving him up on Friday.

We're thinking of having a session for him at our house or the 'Mile. You in?

Whoa! I'm going to have to kick Bill D off the computer more often so I don't get so far out of touch here! :-)

Where to start?

Fortunato, you suggested "Help I am Lost Please Direct Me to 1935." Sorry, that's too long to type in the grid! :-) So, would you settle for "Back to 1935?" or "Back to the 30's"?

You can PM me for details.

CET, I'm thinking of having a session called "Civil Wars" and one called "Uncivil Wars." I would like to get someone from the US and someone from the UK to co-lead the Civil Wars. I know several people who do songs from the American Civil war but would like to hear from any mudcatters who are interested. CET, do you do a lot of that type of music?

On the subject of session leaders, it helps to have two or more people leading a session.

Dani, have you just volunteered to lead "Scary Stories and Songs" around the camp fire on Friday or Saturday night? It may have to be after 11pm so as not to conflict with the concert though. I'll give that some thought. We do have a kids' campfire led by Annie Storr and Joe Offer, it's been especially nice since Joe has been there to captivate the kids with his story telling magic.

CET, not sure what you mean by vocal warm up sessions. There are plenty of places for people to warm up, but also, Lisa Null will be doing her vocal clinic for an hour each day. Last year I think she spent a lot of time talking about warm-ups. Would you like to lead a vocal warm-ups session, either first thing in the morning or after lunch one day? I think it would be very welcome, lots of people would be interested in learning more about it. PM me about it OK?

My vague plan is to post the list of workshops planned to date, and tell which ones still need leaders. I should also post that on the Web site. It would sure save me a lot of phone calling if people came to me and OFFERED to help. ESPECIALLY, those of you who are long-time members of FSGW, and have led stuff in the past, or wanted to do so --- I would LOVE to hear from you. If I haven't already called you it's because I'm an air head, not because I'm not interested.

You know who you are.

Jeri! I hereby appoint you leader of the session on "Songs Bill D Will Hate!" (Just kidding -- I think)

GutBucket, I haven't found a leader yet for a Jug Band session. Have only asked two people so far though. Could you lead it if you only have to lead one or two songs? (That's the first, and the last if you wish.) Then you just start asking the other participants who wants to lead something. If you run out of songs, you all can leave.... no problem. I would LOVE to have this session.

SWIMMERS: I DON't believe the camp would look kindly on our using the pool. They have a caretaker who fussed last year just because we un-stacked the pool chairs for the Shanty Sing. (Charlie, can you clear it ahead of time this year for us to use the pool area for singing if desired?)

Anybody who wants to help with anything, just post to this thread or PM me. If you don't hear from me, PM Bill D who will beat me with a wet noodle and make me check my mail.

We will be having a Silent Auction again this year to benefit the Getaway Scholarship Fund.

If you would like a grant from said Scholarship Fund, indicate it on your registration and write a separate note about why you need it. Funds are limited but we try hard to help.

I was taking names as I read this thread, so will be sending PM's to several people WRT the program.

Bill Sables gave me a heads up about him and Sam Pirt being there this year. I'm thinking about trying to attend at least part of the Getaway.

My transportation situation is tricky. I think I might be able to get transportation to Montgomery County (Leisure World), but I don't know how I might go about getting from there to the Getaway. And I don't know if I can stay for the whole thing.

Are there any Montgomery County 'catters who will be attending all or part of the getaway who have room for one very small woman and her accordion in their vehicle?

We just got back from camping for a week at the Pinery in Ontario and so right now I'm full of energy and raring to go. It's amazing what a week of sleep, no computers, and laying around and playing all day will do for you!

Dani: Scary songs far away from everything sounds perfect. The stars will be out and the air crisp. Can we tell scary stories too?????

Rita: I'm now committed to jugband and novelty tunes. I can lead at least two songs. I'll try to round up some others to provide support too. Does Special Ed usually come? Has Dottie ever led anything? Whatever happens I'm sure we make make it a fun session.

Carol C...Leisure World is just up the street from me...and since I do NOT have to transport either a washtub bass or Micca..*grin*...something could probably be worked out.

Sounds good, Bill D.

I'll contact you by PM (probably tomorrow or the day after) to discuss it further. Thanks.

Leisure World?

Uh-huh........Why do I get this mental image of a padded naughahyde bar, bad paintings on black velvet, shag carpet, a bad band with a lounge lizard crooner, and a bunch of fat farts in polyester?

'Spaw its true name is "Seizure World".

Gutbuct/JAB I know a couple of Jugband tunes, I'm in.

Maybe Ferrera can avoid scheduling "Direct me to 1935" and Jugband at the same hour.

This is going to be a great Getaway. I can't wait. Should be a wonderful gathering. And it looks like I can make it on time this year. See you all there.

Micca and Bill Sables and Sam Pirt are coming? Why, I might be able to come to this Getaway. Last year in October I was in the UK meeting a bunch of those great UK Mudcatters! Another Mudcat reunion. Sounds like a blast....

Noreen, Patrish, are you coming over as well?

Why not schedule a screening of "The Songcatcher?"

*LOL* Spaw!

I wish, Linda.... but not this year. I see that Sam said on another thread that he and Bill are no longer going to make it to the Getaway? Or is he winding people up?

Do you suppose anyone from the FSGW will be heading anywhere near BWI on Monday, and have room for a travller with instrument/s? Or, better yet, might there be some sort of public transportation nearby?
