Subject: Help: Musician's name? From: pavane Date: 10 Aug 01 - 08:58 AM This is a bit of a long shot, but anyway: Many years ago, when working abroad, I met a (British)girl/lady who played folk tunes on a 7 string guitar - does anyone recall her? Her first name may have been Jill/Gill? |
Subject: RE: Help: Musician's name? From: The Shambles Date: 11 Aug 01 - 05:20 AM No sorry I don't know the answer but I will refresh the thread to enable someone who may know, to post the answer.
I did recently see a jolly good name, that tickled me...How about Sheamus O'Blivion and the Mettalic Morrismen. |
Subject: RE: Help: Musician's name? From: Mr Red Date: 11 Aug 01 - 05:50 AM Just what English Folkdom needs, an English answer to Riverdance. Mettalic Morrismen. Hmmmmm Makes a change from wooden ones I guess. |
Subject: RE: Help: Musician's name? From: vindelis Date: 11 Aug 01 - 06:41 AM I don't recall any ladies playing seen string guitars, but the only Gill I can think of is Gill Burns. She visited Portland Folk Club during the early 1980's. She also had made a record entitled 'roller skating' I think. |
Subject: RE: Help: Musician's name? From: The Shambles Date: 12 Aug 01 - 05:40 AM There can't be many seven string guitar playing ladies, can there? |
Subject: RE: Help: Musician's name? From: 8_Pints Date: 12 Aug 01 - 11:38 AM Hi Pavanne, "Abroad" is a pretty big place! Did you hear her locally, on radio, and what setting? Bob vG |
Subject: RE: Help: Musician's name? From: Charley Noble Date: 12 Aug 01 - 11:55 AM We may have a new song coming out of this: "Abroad with a 7-String Guitar." Keep digging. |
Subject: RE: Help: Musician's name? From: Mark Cohen Date: 13 Aug 01 - 04:46 AM If somebody locates her, they should put her in touch with Art Thieme, the King of the Nine-String Guitar. "You pick sixteen strings, and what do you get....?" Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Help: Musician's name? From: pavane Date: 13 Aug 01 - 04:59 AM I think it WAS Gill Burns - the name sounds familiar. Thanks to all, I will look up her recording. Abroad - I seem to remember it was when I was living in Dubai, c1981. (Member/musician, Dubai Sharjah Morris), but it COULD have been Luxembourg 1983. BTW, We started a Morris side there, but it folded when we left in 1984. Our one and only dance-out was at our leaving do, where we had the services of Chris Birch as musician. (Chris is to be heard singing and playing on smany of Peter Bellamy's recordings, including his Kipling series - he was Peter's brother-in-law) |
Subject: RE: Help: Musician's name? From: GeorgeH Date: 13 Aug 01 - 09:07 AM Ouse Washes Molly are the PERFECT English answer to Riverdance . . . They are totally stunning, both in their music and their dancing. At Sidmouth we saw them in a concert which comprised: Japanese Taiko drummers (U. Stage) Kenyan Music and Dance (ALGAP) - with massed percussion Ouse Washes Molly Bangra (Kuljit Bhamra and the Heritage of Punjab Dance Troupe) The whole evening was outstanding, and Ouse Washes were in no way outclassed by the rest of the bill. (And did another half hour or so outside the arena after the concert.) Look out for them - and the other acts listed. THAT concert was the Sidmouth highlight.

Subject: RE: Help: Musician's name? From: pavane Date: 14 Aug 01 - 05:11 AM Very interesting George, but is it in the right thread? I can't see a connection!. BTW Although a former Morris dancer, I have never actually seen Molly dancing. Sounds as if I am missing something good. |
Subject: RE: Help: Musician's name? From: pavane Date: 14 Aug 01 - 05:12 AM Sorry, found the connection after rereading the thread! |
Subject: RE: Help: Musician's name? From: Dita Date: 15 Aug 01 - 08:03 PM I remember Gill Burns from the early 80's when she played the Glasgow folk clubs whilst touring. She was the best female guitar player I had heard at that point, and I've yet to hear many better, male or female. Gill came from Liverpool. The only recordings I am aware of are as follows -
Women's Guitar Workshop (5 tracks)- Kicking Mule SNKF149 (1978)
The guitar workshop features trad tunes, Aloan trad song, trad tunes & three self penned songs, and the single two of her own songs.
It seems to me that I do remember somebody with an extra machine head coming out of the top, (an adaption, not luthier made), but don't know if it was Gill. |

Subject: RE: Help: Musician's name? From: pavane Date: 16 Aug 01 - 06:51 AM seems a pretty feeble name to me |
