I'll be at this weekend's Walton folk festival. I hope I'll not be the only Mudcatter there, and I doubt if I will be.

If you're in range of Essex this weekend, it's a great little festival, with lots of free stuff going on.

It is a really fun festi. At least it was last year, apart from the truly abysmal Whorticulture, natch.

Give Brixton Bert loads of hugs and kisses from Mary. I can't be there to deliver them personally.

Wel, I'll pass on the sentiments, but as for the kisses...NO WAY!

Went last year and had a good time.

However I managed to disqualify myself from the Chorus singing contest by announcing that my song John Ball was written by Sidney Carter. I overlooked the fact that the song is supposed to to be "Traditional". Never mind I, my other half and Tony and Leslie (of Capella) had a damn good sing anyway. Dave

It'll be a surprise for her! She's been much better since I moved to Tulsa.

Using the Personal Message facility maybe might be a better idea here, English Jon and Jim Cheydi?

I know it's late, but is anyone driving to Walton on Sat morning and coming home that night (real late!) from the Loughton/Waltham Abbey area? I am visiting from Australia on Hols. Thanks Jenny Fitz, 0208 5021300

Once again it's Walton Folk Festival, this weekend 5th-7th September.

I should be getting there. Who else?

Linda and I will be there - we're on the guest list as usual. As Ted Clark is still getting over his recent operation, Derek Brown will be filling in for him on some of our spots.

Mary, I never hugged or Kissed Bert before he died - and I'm not going to start now. I will try to bring some rum with me, though, I'm sure that handing that round would be a suitable gesture.

See you all there.

Liz, try the "The Royal Marine" - see these photos from last years festival. BTW now that you no longer have a Tit Tamper Alarm fitted, do I get a cuddle ?

In fact Kevin it's probably photos like this one of myself and Pete Chopping which have got this thread into the BS category.

I shall be trying to get down on Saturday - what time does it all kick off and are there any pub sessions that day?

There's nearly always a session in the "Royal Marine" - if not start one yourself. It is rumoured that the aforesaid watering hole does actually close sometime during the festival (ie last orders etc) but I've never seen it happen - even at 2 in the morning. Walton is a pretty small place so all the venues in the town are only a short stagger away from each other.

The Royal Marine must close some time, because they don't do early breakfasts. But anytime I've been there it's still going strong when I've staggered off to my tent in the small hours. I think they've anticipated the 24 hours opening for the duration of the festival anyway - the police just drive on past, and the landlord never bothers to pull the curtains tight, that I've seen.

Maybe that patriotic gesture when they cancelled the festival when Princess Diana forgot to wear her safety belt has paid off...

I'll be there Dave - Royal Marine I think, but then again I'm not too sure. Whichever way it looks to be a good 'un as usual and I am looking forward to it. Sounds like the tent might be getting wet this weekend though.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the mudcatters there. Hi Liz the Squeek, Manitas & Bratling, hope the knitting is coming along. Fine playing and wonderful to listen to Manitas. Dave Bryant & Essex girl were in fine voice and McGrath of Harlow was singing and playing to great effect in the Marine. Me - well I had fun except for the 'Levellers Revellers' on Friday night - just that thin strip of tent between me, them and their Vodka 'til 4am was almost too much, so I was tired by midnight Saturday. Thanks to all for helping at the mini-concert in the Marine on Saturday, it made my stint that much easier. I would have preferred it to have been a session, but the programme didn't say that. Here's to the next one - I'm off to the Solent Folk Festival the weekend after next, then a rest until Tenterden Folk Weekend starting 3rd. October. Hope to see some of you there.

And "Serious Kitchen" - with Mudcatter kitchen piper - were Seriously Good. Here's their website. (With sound clips so you can check what I mean.) I'd liked them pretty when I heard them at Leigh-on-Sea Festival, but they sounded much better at Walton - mainly maybe because the sound system indoors was much better this time.

And you could hear every word Nick Hennessy sang, even when they were going full blast, and that is a lot more than you could say for the Oyster Band.

BTW there will be a Shanty/Maritime weekend at "The Royal Marine" on the weekend of 21-23 November. They have some excellent guests booked including Johnny Collins, Jim Magean, Graeme Knights, and the Cap Hoorn Shanty Men from Holland. Last year's event was excellent. Unfortunately, I'm booked to run a singaround at the CSH, Fred Jordan memorial event, so it doesn't look as though I can make it unfortunately.
