Subject: Autumn Days From: GUEST,Evilfiend Date: 07 Sep 01 - 02:30 PM Just wondering if anyone can point me towards the piano music or guitar chords for the childrens song Autumn Days, for a Harvest festival. Autumn Days when the grass is jewelled, And the silk inside a chestnut shell, Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled, All these things I love so well. Thats the first verse I think. Thanks! No, I mustn't forget! To get some potent foot spray I mustn't forget! That's what google found for me |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Autumn Days From: IanC Date: 10 Sep 01 - 05:09 AM This is a childrens' hymn. I can't find all the words on the net so far, but my children all sing it so I know the words above are a parody. The first verse is available in this quite on the net The Times of London reports that "The choir of a renowned 12th-century Norfolk parish church has been split after members resigned in protest at having to sing in praise of jet planes refuelling in mid-air at the annual harvest festival." (Autumn days when the grass is jewelled And the silk inside a chestnut shell, Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled, all these things I love so well.) "The Vicar's three children and a handful of others have been left alone in the choir stalls at St. Mary's, Wroxham, known as 'the cathedral of the Broads,' when Carole Tims, the music director, and 11 choristers walked out after 'intemperate words' were exchanged in the vestry." You wouldn't think a simple song like that could cause so much fuss, would you? Other sources say the song was written 18 years ago, but not who by. I suspect it may be in "Mission Praise" - a book much reviled by English church choirs. I like the song, myself.
Cheers! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Autumn Days From: Noreen Date: 10 Sep 01 - 05:21 AM It's in 'Come and Praise', Jen, and I can get it for you ina couple of days if no-one does before. Do you need the words too, or just the chords? They'll be quite easy to type in. Noreen |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Autumn Days From: GUEST,Lanfranc at the orifice Date: 10 Sep 01 - 06:15 AM I managed to get the offending words replaced by "gathering wood for our winter fuel" when asked to play it for a church service some years ago. Didn't have time to get another cringe-making line about "a goal for my home team" removed, so I just tried to keep the contempt off my face as it was sung. I have since erased it from my memory, I'm glad to say. The sophistry and sloppy theology of most modern hymns appalls me. Indeed, having been brought up in the Anglican tradition for most of my life, I have now abandoned church attendance altogether, except for weddings and funerals. One of the final straws was opening the hymnbook at a Christmas Carol Concert to discover that "Good Christian men, rejoice!" had been PC'd to "Good Christian folk..." I didn't dare to look to see what else had been turned into a travesty. Alan (President of Curmudgeons International) |

Clouds that look like familiar faces And a winter's moon with frosted rings Smell of bacon as I fasten up my laces And the song the milkman sings Whipped up spray that is rainbow scattered And a swallow curving in the sky Shoes so comfy though they're worn-out and they're battered And the taste of apple pie. Scent of gardens when the rain's been falling And a minnow darting down a stream Picked up engine that's been stuttering and stalling And a win for my home team. Subject: RE: Tune Req: Autumn Days (Estelle White) From: GUEST,Jess Date: 08 Jan 11 - 08:09 PM Thanks for the chords, they are a fantastic find :) To the disparaging comments of some earlier posters: 1) The composer wrote this song for her own pupils (not originally for publication), at a school on a flight-path, where stopping to watch the activities of passing planes was part of the joy of playground life - it's not a stupid line at all, just that some people criticize it with no knowledge of the context. 2) Have some of us forgotten what it was like to be children, and become embarrased by simple pleasures in the world around us? Stick to your high-and-mighty theology if you must, but don't forget that in the Gospels, Jesus seemed more impressed with the simple joy that many children show in the world around them than in the posturing self-righteousness of those who believed they knew what was "theologically right". Hats off to all of you who share this simple and happy song with those around you :) |
